An ICO is a fundraising operation for a project through the sale of cryptographic tokens. The tokens are sold at a discount and later on may be used within the project or sold for a profit. ICOs are unregulated and hold a lot of risk for uneducated investors.
Altcoins, as alternative currencies to Bitcoin. There are four main factors to take into account when evaluating a cryptocurrency - Adoption, security, innovation, and incentives.

So with IPOs & buying stock, there are often perks for the stock owners in the long run if the company goes well like dividends etc - in addition to the inc stock price.
With ICOs and owning the tokens, there doesn't seem to be any benefit besides relying on the the "hype" continuing long term and people keep buying the coins?
i..e. the price of the coins won't necessarily correlate with the companies future success.
The price of the token over the long run seems to be independent of the company's performance and dependent solely on public hype.
Is this right?
Because just trying to discern the benefits of ICOs + investing in startups for the Hodler style investor?

Well, you have convinced me that all or most ICO's are scams and in this day and age and as of this writing.....I am sure that a scam of this kind is everywhere including existing coins on the market. No thanks. HODL is probably the only way to invest.
