    I'm into Hifi in a big way, I found this video so funny and agree this sort of gear does nothing but to damage records and yet some reasonable into quality audio gear doesn't cost that much more

    I had one for three days, went back to the store since it was already broken.
    I didn't personally buy it.
    It seems like all of them use the very same turntable assembly ran by a casette player motor.
    I believe it's just a gadget aimed at average hipster teens.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings 9 років тому +5

      MisterTalkingMachine I have to say: "I wish people would stop thinking all teens do not care about sound!". I do! Check out my channel to see how much I do! I think Crosley is crap though and don't think it is marketed toward teens at all!

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 9 років тому +5

      Joshua's Recordings I actually do not think al teens do not care about sound. They, and most people nowadays, can be even quite demanding to listen to things like noisy records, or AM radio.
      The thing about the Crosleys, it that though they are very low end, they are expensive, and much people fall for their shiny looks and the old Crosley fame.
      If it wasn't for their overprizing, I wouldn't care about them, since as bad as they are, they are not a new thing. I have come across old players of the 80's that are actually built exactly like today's Crosleys, but they were cheap, popular brands like 'International'.
      I currently have a player that costed me one tenth of a Crosley price tag to build from parts, some of them I got for free or scavenged from TV's. It has big flaws, but it performs as good as the Crosley, and if it falls from the table (like it has done once or twice) you just pick it up and nothing happens to it.
      More than teens, it is obvious that it 's in general, aimed towards people who don't know that they are paying so much for. They may receive a broken device that performs nowhere near what they wanted, if it performs at all.
      Not always much a matter of sound, some people like me just like to place the darn piece of shellac on that bulky device and hear some crispy Glenn Miller even if the people around me cover their ears.
      Nice videos, mate, I think I actually have seen one or two of them before.

    • @JoshuasRecordings
      @JoshuasRecordings 9 років тому +4

      MisterTalkingMachine Yea, I have come across some Crosley units, they suck! I once repaired one for my Grandfather (it was less then a year old), the circuit boards had water damage on them! I remember he told me he bought a record player half off, then I saw it was a Crosley and was like "ohhh..."
      I agree Crosleys suck and are GPX boombox quality sold for a high price tag. Though I have to agree on one part, most people I know that are teens, do not give a hoot about sound. Some are perfectly fine listening to music on 1" apple speakers and junk quality earpods! That makes me sad! What have we come to!!

    • @MisterTalkingMachine
      @MisterTalkingMachine 9 років тому +1

      Joshua's Recordings I have to say though I do not like much those one inchers, they come to solve the same issue that pocket transistor radios did in the old days: Portability. Their perfomance can be similar as well, since both were subject to the same limitations.
      No big surprise that most people use consumer grade products (and because of that, those are called 'consumer grade', mind you). One inchers and regular earbuds fit in there most of the time.
      Many one inchers I have taken apart are nearly built the same way, no matter who manufactured them (either Apple or whatever nameless chinese company), and they perform as good as they can while being quite cheap. No problem there, you pay, and receive what you paid for.
      Now, the average Crosley amplifier is about the same of the one incher, and the speakers tend to be the same as well; but the real issue is that the mechanical part of the Crosley is very poor. The portable amplifier barey has any mechanism, (volume knob and that's it) and is built on a thick plastic case, not much to it. It is simple, and because of it, quite robust. They lack any record playing assembly made like plastic food plates.

    The combination of choice of records with the scientifically chosen testing grounds is hilarious. I couldn't stop grinning throughout the video. Who would design a record player in a suitcase with a sigaret lighter adapter indeed :) I guess there must be people who love listening to records playing in their cars really badly, or people who carry electric sigaret lighters and a lead acid battery in their pockets :p

    Or maybe some old timer thinking he's buying some piece of craftsmanship like how stuff used to be back in the day. He sits in down in his bedroom and plays his old 45's. Being nostalgic and all, sees no difference in quality.

    The Crosley "record player" excels at one thing: playing potentially unwanted LP's at 78 rpm and turning them into instant chipmunks records. :). Unfortunately, the anti-skip mechanism was overlooked by the *cough* engineers *cough* at Crosley. Good vid, keep them coming!

      I still have my copy of the same LP in my collection. The record is in excellent which I've got at a flea market since 2004. "shango" also has a beat up copy.
      As for the suitcase record player by Crosley, not the best modern record player in the world. Thanks to China. I should stick with vintage record player such as my GE Wildcat, but that was also a suitcase stereo record player with a changer. General Electric is better than Crosley.

    Funniest video I've watched in a long time. The idea of a road test in a car, playing a John Birch or Disney record, I mean there's too much comedy there. An anti-skating feature would have made all the difference. BTW, the Birchers were right about the threat of Communism.

    This Crosley record player is okay and that is a stretch of the word. I have heard of some people buying them and modifying them by changing out the crappy tone arm and cartridge. I wouldn't even do that since they are so poorly built. I would still be concerned the damn thing would ruin my records. The road test was hilarious. At low speeds and no bumps in the road the player did good. Turning either directing wow the player scratched the hell outta those records. Very interesting video.

    What boggles the mind is that the millennial generation has been brainwashed into thinking these are the "hip" thing to buy. They think that "vinyls" played on these sound soooo much better than other formats. Oh Lord have we raised a generation of total suckers. Next thing you know, they will discover the wonder of radio.

    • @BenMale
      @BenMale 6 років тому +3

      Fear not, there are plenty of us who know what we're talking about. Though I'm a few years too old to be a millennial, I'm not far off - and it seems the more interest people have in the format the more they realise just how terrible these players are, but retain an interest in records none the less. I've gone shopping with friends in old flee markets and helped them put together really nice sounding hifi units using high quality vintage equipment, mostly for less than £150 a pop. To put that into perspective, if you went into HMV in the UK and wanted to purchase a turntable (though giving it the name turntable is probably landing it with more credit than it's due), you'd spend the same amount on a Crosley Cruiser with two terrible speakers bundled with it.
      Long story short, though these players are terrible - for those serious about music, they'll understand that these things are garbage and quickly find an alternative. The ones who aren't serious will use them till they're out of fashion, and then they'll all be off to the tip, where they belong.

    Don't buy a turntable that is $100 or less if you want a vinyl to last long. Basically the needles on allot of turn tables that are under $100 or less will destroy your vinyl's grooves after a very few listens. Always clean your records if you see allot of dust and use one of the right methods and don't press too hard if you use a brush. that will make it last longer with a good record player. Also you should get a really good set of speakers for your record player. Also you should make sure your record player isn't really dusty every time you listen to a vinyl record. Also you should keep your vinyl in the case when your not listening. Also you should not let your vinyl be stored in and store your vinyl records vertically . With these tips you can make you keep your vinyl records sounding great and not have pops or clicks and last basically forever unless you harm the vinyl badly on accident or purpose. I know owning good stuff for vinyl may cost you allot of money, but if you are in to good sounding vinyl its worth saving your money to get good stuff for vinyl. DON'T BUY ANY CROSSLY RECORD PLAYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Here are some helpful videos about vinyl
    ua-cam.com/video/L2QfjcgDjsY/v-deo.html

    Also these sleeves are good. They come with 50 sleeves per pack

    If you want to keep your vinyl records from having skips and/or cracks and/or pops, one of the things you should never do is have a portable record player, almost all of them are crap, and also never play vinyl with a portable record player in a moving vehicle. and put a vinyl back in the case when your done using it and also make sure you clean the dust away when you see allot of dust on a vinyl. You have to be extremely careful when you take off a paper sleeve for a vinyl, you should take it off very gently or else it may scratch the vinyl.

      Damage is more likely done by worn or damage stylus than heavy pickup because vinyl is not that fragile. Check +vwestlife video "Will a cheap record player DESTROY your vinyl?". I can't put a link or Google spam filter catches me.

    I have imported 3 of these models into Australia to see what they are like, my first one is a 2002 tweed colour, from what I find it isn't bad for the sound the 5x3 speakers give, 45s and 78s play adequately loud with the volume reaching it's max with knob 3/4 open

    Not sure if I did the math right, but W=A*V so at 0.5a* 12vdc would be 24W.

    You need to run that through a 1000 watt Alpine power amp with two 18 inch subs. Imagine the rumble you'd get out of that.

    I had a Crosley stereo, and the lid for its record player came apart. I used wood glue to repair it, and the lid and whole unit were okay after that.

    Nice Diplomat! I would find those crappy Crosley record players at flea markets, "fix" them by overriding the switch that stops the turntable, which was inevitably broken, and then installing a 12 volt gel battery like the one you used, inside the unit. Wiring the battery up in parallel with the 12 volt wall wart connector, so the wall wart becomes the charger. Record weasels like them, because they can test unknown records at flea markets and yard sales, and discover a new gem. Those record players are good for picnics, as long as everyone stays close to the record player, and the have excellent hearing.

      My GE Wildcat doesn't have batteries, it has an AC power cord. That doesn't work in any vehicle. If they do with the Wildcat, they need to retro mod with a battery compartment replacing the power cord for the GE Wildcat.

    This is why 8 track tapes are so superior to this mess. Do you have any of those RCA under dash 45 RPM players that play upside down you can test?
