    A timely appropriate video with the FCC ending net neutrality today.

    • @KennethScharf
      @KennethScharf 6 років тому +7

      Actually didn't end today. Won't go into effect until sometime next year, and there are numerous law suites already pending from 17 states to block it. Not to mention angry voters sending bomb threats to their congressmen, that will likely delay it even further.

      People are probably excited about the Philco Ford because it's early all transitorized. The same reason people like 1940's TV's and why Shango likes old color roundies, they represent new technology for their time.

      Isn't net neutrality the thing Obama instituted that basically reduced internet freedom by implementing more government controls? That's like having government controlled press, which is a really bad idea. I remember the protests when Obama first implemented it, it is the opposite of a free internet. Socialist in nature rather than capitalist.

    Dear Shango066, I am also a restaurer from Serbia, Europe. We had our own Yugoslav industry, so we had our own tube factory "Ei". Our radios are the same as all other European radios of that era. Fortunately all tubes except EABC80 can be changed with Soviet ones. Especially I discovered in my practice that Soviet 6N1P (6Н1П) Can be easily substituted for ECC85 in FM frontend. It is catalogued as AF tube, but it works great for FM.

    A time-honored classic rock station being replaced by Christian rock---I personally find the classic rock station to be more sacred, pun intended.

    Nice radio! And speaking of that, and thanks for mentioning KSWD's "The Sound". I'm not a rock fan of this station, but I'm much of an oldies fan, but I still have airchecks from the last day of "The Sound" as a classic rock station in my collection. They have songs what they liked or don't liked, but I don't followed rock stations at all. At some point, they played some rock songs that were mostly oldies, while playing heavy rock like Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rolling Stones, and so on. The last songs that played on "The Sound" are selections from side 2 of a classic Beatles album "Abbey Road", but I still have the album and it was a reissue on the Capitol label instead of Apple.
    And speaking of "The Sound", I heard the sad news, WGHT, a little known radio station in Pompton Lakes, NJ that plays oldies for about 24 years signed off after 2 PM where the station closed its doors with John Sillman, a midday DJ/program director at WGHT where he played a lot of great songs and finally signed off with "Dance to the Music" by Sly and the Family Stone until the station pulled the plug. What a sad way to see WGHT go. First there was "The Sound", and now WGHT.
    To get back to "The Sound's" demise, I started recording at 8 AM in the east coast, because the show started at 6 AM on the West Coast, and it ran until the station finally ended at 4 PM on the east, and 1 PM on the west if I'm on east coast, it was right towards sundown.

    That's pretty sad, I don't usually comment but I have always been jealous of American FM radio. They pulled the plug on the whole thing in Norway, people just don't care about sound quality anymore here it seems. No way in hell they would be bothered to even play vinyl since it all ends up with 64kbps AAC at the receiver anyways.

      If you compare vinyl in bit rate compared to a 192k mp3 the mp3 will sound better if it recorded right. I believe if i remember correctly vinyl can hold up to 33k on peaks.

    This EMUD Radio was made in Ulm, right where I live. That's a rare one but funny thing is that they exported a lot to the USA so they might be more common over there than in Germany. Yours is definitely an export model. By the way, EMUD stands for Ernst Maestling Ulm Donau, so it's just the name of the company founder and the city where the company was located. As far as I know they went out of business somewhere in the mid 1960s. Great find and great video as always. The loss of a good rock station is always a shame, too many Top40 stations playing just the same shit over and over...and Christian music? WTF???

There are so many pirate radio stations in the NYC area, including the best one is Brooklyn playing too much garbage like gangster rap, reggae and Caribbean music. My guess is oldies will go into a pirate station.

    In 2009, I serviced a 5KW/Daytime, 300W/Nighttime, Continental transmitter, for a radio station in southeastern Pennsylvania. The new owner agreed to split the cost of replacing the klystron, and their pressurized Ln2 transmission cable system for the 5KW main transmitter. The 1KW CCA backup ate a tetrode array, and had modulation issues. The tower maintenance service which I used, billed $11,000.00 for the new cable installs for both transmitters. My invoicing totaled $7,200.00.
    The selling owner, who had been my customer since the late 1980's, paid their half ($3,600.00) within ten days, and told me that the new owner would pay their portion of the total due within thirty days, and that the indebtedness, and circumstance thereof, had been noted in the settlement.
    The present owner, a religious broadcaster, has 11 other stations, one 20KW, and a 100KW Shortwave station. With that inventory of stations, I had no concerns about their making good on their half of the invoice.
    Mid-Atlantic Tower Maintenance Corp, and I both have judgments, which we can't collect until the station is sold, because of some damned loophole added to Interstate Commerce laws regarding non-profit/educational broadcasters during the era when PBS was being conceived and built. I also understand that the original owner is owed damn near $15K, for a second, and brand-new 30KW Onan Industrial propane/natural gas backup generator which was not included on the asset transfer schedule, as he was going to relocate it to his rural home, but did not after the new owner signed a separate agreement to purchase it on installments.
    I hope that the transferring owners of KSWD, fare better than we did....

    I was tuned in when The Sound closed down. Sad moment indeed, but EMF, which bought the station from Entercom, wanted desperately a full power signal in Market #2 (LA) and Entercom had to divest one of their signals when they absorbed CBS. That K-Love network is nationwide, and EMF owns every station & translator it's heard on. Anyhow, I noticed that was a modern factory stereo unit you used for recording the sign-off. No more patrolling SoCal in older Ford's for Shango? Have a nice holiday there and thanks for another year of entertaining vids. Take care.

    Shango, that is crazy, CBS did the same thing with a classic rock station we had, they played really great music here in Chicago, CBS sold it to Entercom and now it is a classic rap station. For me I had no idea it happened, I got off work early in the morning, started my car, and it was rap. It was sad, but thankfully Chicago has a lot of other classic rock stations, but they did have a good variety on the one they closed down.

      It's a similar deal in the UK, I'm lucky to be just within reach (more so on decent analogue tuners than digitised) of 106.1, formerly Planet Rock now renamed XS Manchester & they play the best stuff on FM, MW/LW pretty much dead over here and DAB has a couple of reasonable rock efforts but for the most part it's a case of looking up online whatever tune I happen to be feeling at the time. I work pretty much radio-free now because there's nothing all-day listenable any more :(

    Sad to see another station converted to K-Love... In my area there was one major CBS O&O KDKA 1020, the station engineer posted on Facebook that for the FIRST time in 97 years KDKA radio would not be owned by some vestige of Westinghouse. It has been a News/Talk station since the mid 90'sso the format will probably not change, although with Entercom's record, who knows if they will make it to 100 years on the air.

    I have wondered why local stations with the callsigns WJLS weren't required to switch to a different callsign when they translated the AM signal. Now we have 2 WJLS's on FM broadcasting two different formats. They recently switched from gospel to a news talk format on the AM. I'm sure some are upset because many local churches and individuals went of the air.

    that is what is wrong with the world today they get rid of all the great stuff and replace it with garbage and useless crap . horrible radio stations take over from the great oldies stations like wcbs fm 101.1 and many others and it is a real shame that they cant leave what works alone and they have to put crap on and make life worse . well we do not have to listen but it is relally not good . the same with electronics . but thank god for records to keep and listen to .

    • @OlegKostoglatov
      @OlegKostoglatov 6 років тому

      It's a miniature seven pin version of a 1LA6, which is a $3-$6 tube, half the time you can swap one out for a 1R5 with a slight wiring change. Mind you the 1R5 sometimes doesn't want to work at higher frequencies, but some sets that used 1L6s were AM broadcast only sets that don't need them.

    I thought the Philco Ford was an EMUD! Looking forward to that on Monday as it looks a really complicated set. We've lost quite a lot of good independent stations here in my part of the UK, they have been bought up by big corporations and just turned into generic crap now all pumping out the same stuff from one central location

    • @TurboTel68
      @TurboTel68 6 років тому

      Speaker Sex Smooth is ok but we had Gold on that AM frequency beforehand and I preferred it, but hey it's better than nothing I suppose. I mostly listen to planet rock on DAB now if I'm in the workshop

    ECC85/6AQ8 prices seem to be all over the place, maybe some vendors don't understand the difference between an ECC83 and an ECC85, or assume that whoever buys them, won't realize that it's an FM mixer oscillator tube and not an audio tube. But then again I see fleabay sellers trying to sell rectifier tubes as "matched pairs" or two tubes of completely different makes as matches pairs, just like everything is art deco and Eames Era too.
