You are 100 percent right… rape isn’t what people think it is. So many think it just makes everything better, but many times it just ruins and muddy’s up your low end, smears transients, and ruins punch and clarity. It’s all wrong, especially in heavier types of music

Why doesnt it have a 30 ips option????? when I was learning at CRAS we always tracked @ 30ips, is the faster the tape goes, its basically it's sample rate, 30ips sounds more realistic than 15. doesnt it?

To anyone reading this: Would you rather try to squeeze some "analog warmth" in your mix with a console emulation plugin, or with a tape emulation plugin ?

@@hokkym.6348 totaly agree. But in the tape days and analog console days you simply could not choose if you wanted more or less tape or console in your mixes. You just accepted that as a sonic limitation and scuplted your sounds around that topology. So when I choose to be consistent in this fasion, for every album I mix, I construct a different tape / console topology that is consistent through out the album. So even tracks that might be a bit different context-wise can now at least sound consistent sound-wise ashare the same topology like they would if they were produced 20+ years ago. Took me lots of time to make a 150+ plugin template for this but then I customise the template for each project and its very fun mixing this way. Each song kind of mixes itself. I even choose the same plate-hall-room presets to follow a whole album cos same presets + different sources = different reaults. Just my two pennies...

This thing is the real deal... I held off from buying UAD for a long time because it costs more than waves plugins; I finally got a bundle of their stuff on sale which included this... just last night I compared this to my other tape emulators... OOOOOFFAAAA. This blows them all away; you don't even have to change any settings... most of them you are adding saturation (as if tape machine's give you that option); with this you just turn it on.

I like these tape plugins and uad compressors
Compared to other brands on the market , I do have an interface however. I considered uad interfaces but have heard you’re pretty limited to just a few plugins at a time due to processing limitations.
With satellites like an 8 core how many plugins of saturation can I expect? With some compressors too?
I like the freedom of tweaking back and forth . For example working in drum parts with vocals and guitar tracks at once .
How many tracks could I put this on roughly? Along with an la2a and 1176 compressor on an 8 core satellite?

Love UAD, but I look at this and think hey, I'll put this on everything...and then remember I'll never have enough DSP to do it. with my Apollo I have to make decisions...what UAD do I ABSOLUTELY need, then when I hit 99% its all waves, slate and everything else. 9.8% in mono and 15.4 in Stereo. So, in the example above over half the DSP in the Apollo DUO would be gone. Maybe worth it, but would hate to sacrifice using Pultecs, Neve's, EMT 140, etc. Time for another Apollo or a satellite...or 2.

I tend to use stuff like this on a separate master mix of the final stereo mixdown/bounce (I bought the Ampex reel to reel). I agree, this stuff just eats DSP, and I do wish I'd gotten the Quad instead of Duo now. But..and this I really can't complain about...its making me make decisions early and printing them to tracks as I record, like how you would do with actual hardware. It's forcing me to learn to software better and to really concentrate on what it all sounds like. Not necessarily a bad thing. But I'm a bit new to computer DAWs so I haven't formed the ability to change everything after the fact as a habit.

With tape sims (whether UAD or native), I've actually really enjoyed printing all my tracks through a tape sim first with nothing else on them. Then, I start my mix with the tape processed tracks. This workflow simulates the way people used to get mixes -- with tracks that had been recorded to tape. Mixes just seem to come together way faster for me this way. I end up having to EQ and compress way less. If, on a rare occasion, one of the tape sim processed tracks is giving me trouble, I just fly in the unprocessed track in it's place and try that out. I get to have my tape sims on as many tracks as I want without worrying about them eating up DSP. Yes, there's extra hard drive space, but that's about the cheapest component of a production rig these days so I'm good with that.
