    I have three XL Halo wedges in my bag right now. I don’t get to play or practice very often, and my ball striking is very inconsistent. They have been very helpful and super forgiving for me. I’m not trying to be a scratch golfer, but I still want to have fun when I play. ⛳️

    Great video Jay and totally agree Cleveland offer the best wedges for golfers. The wedge market is currently offering some attractive options such as the new Ping, Callaway, Mizuno, Wilson, and Taylormade models.
    However I remember at a Srixon fitting a few years ago they said they were always surprised when looking at the average golfers bag with cavity back irons and forgiving woods but then seeing players-blade wedges and the ball being played Pro V1. Counterproductive in my view, I always leave my ego at the door and let the fitter and data decide what is best.As a senior with a handicap varying between 15/17 I’m looking forward to a Srixon/ Cleveland fitting day and also trying Wilsonnand the new Mizuno range. In my mind I’d like to play Pro 245 or Wilson Dynapwr forged, I can use ZX4, but no doubt the fitting will decide if I stay in the game improvement segment rather than players distance which to date only i530 seemed as easy to hit.

    Got a set of the cbx4's in 50,54 & 60 and I can quite easily open the face and flop the 60. The grind is made so that opening the face and sliding the under the ball. Should try it !

    First!! Just like Cleveland for me. Zipcore rtx 6's are wonderfull. Oh, and I still bag my cleveland smarstole chipper. I know I can use an iron BLAH BLAH BLAH, but I would rather take my hybrid, break it, chuck it in the lake rather than pull it out of the bag... for now.

      Chippers are great and really come in handy for a lot of golfers that struggle with ground interaction and getting the correct distance control with an iron. Never apologise for using equipment that either makes your score better or you enjoy the game more 👍

      The smart sole chipper is just great. I have my shot scope stats to prove that in proximity to the flag (2.7m and going down) it's only beaten by my putter (2.3m) from outside the green.

      Chipper serve a perfectly good purpose, if you score less they are working for you. A pal of mine is a plus handicap golfer, and uses a chipper, i prefer him to be on the green putting as he seems to hole more shots with his chipper. In clubs scratch matches, we play as a foursomes pair, when he gets the chipper out, the smiles appear on the oppositions face, until he holes from off the green

    Cleveland is great for the short game. I have the smart sole chipper which is brilliant for chip & run shots (it's almost incapable of digging) and the huge 60 CBX2 full face frying pan to get out of high rough/heather trouble. There'll always be one groove somewhere on that massive but slightly insensitive face that'll make contact with the ball. It wipes out any flora that's in the way, at least it leaves that impression at address 😀
    In between I have a "nearly no bounce" S23 58 degree for bunker and tight lie lobs, and a S23 54 degree as the club for every normal chip and pitch shot. The Mizuno's just have such a wonderful feel. PS: I also confess having a wedge fetish.

      As I said in my comment above... I would take my 4Hybrid, break it, and grow it in the lake before my smartsole chipper leaves the bag. I run a 50/54/58/Chipper and am very confident with all of them. My plan was always to phase out the chipper, but that club is by far my leading shot saver. I know I save multiple shots every round with that thing, and now many of my buddies are starting to "borrow" it around the green. It's my "cheater club."

    I enjoy another Cleveland "chipper" up to 5-10 yds off of the green if the surface isn't overly rough; the HyWood, used with a putting stroke. Have to grip down a ways, of course, using a putting stroke. The face is quite forgiving, except maybe on those days when you just seem to lack any sort of feel for the ball.

    Great lesson and I fully agree. Cleveland is very passionate, skilled and thorough about providing chipping solutions for golfers. My only tip would be to keep your old wedges if you're buying a new set with different specs. Sometimes the weather or course may require a change of wedges.

  • @alestev24

    Cleveland clubs are so criminally underrated. Since I noticed a drop in distance lately (nearing my 60th birthday next year), I was very close to buying new "players distance irons", but then I remembered the set of Cleveland 588tt, which sat in my basement. I only had them as my "travel set", because they were cheap at the time and I had not used them for almost a decade. I put them in my bag recently and I am very happy, because my GIR have skyrocketed since. Due to the lower loft of the PW, and because my wedges were about 8 years old as well, I also switched from the 52/58 set-up to 50/54/58 and after testing got Cleveland wedges. 50° RTX6 mid bounce as a GW, 54° RTX Fullface2 mid bounce as a SW and RTX6 tour rack in 58° with low bounce as a LW and SW for compact sand. I opted for these, because my short game is pretty good. However, at the moment I am thinking about putting the 588tt "DW" (49°) in the bag as my gap wedge. The gaps might be better that way, and it is more forgiving and a cheat code for long bunker shots.
    BTW, if you can get your hands on a set, a comparison betweeen these first "players distance irons" (which Cleveand obvioulsy invented 12 years ago) and modern irons of the same ilk ("Is there any improvement?") could be a good topic for a video.

    • @pbode1
      @pbode1 Місяць тому

      Nice, love your combination. I also find my 58 low bounce wedge to be great if the bunker is soft. What do you use for those lies? I used to play high bounce out of all greenside bunkers until I discovered a low bounce with aggressive grind actually cuts through fluffy sand more easily. For me at least. It doesn't work that well if I need the ball to travel a long way across the green, but if I'm short sided or have to negate a high lip, it's pretty much a guarantee to end up OK. The rest of my wedge system consist of a S23 54 mid bounce modest grind, a CBX2 rescue high bounce, a Smart Sole chipper and a second pitching wedge S23 47 degrees. That last one is a bit of an oddity, it compensates for my hollow body PW that is just too fiery to play more delicate shots with (if I try taking off 10 yards it just refuses and tends to fly the normal distance)

      @@pbode1 I am scared that the 58° low bounce will dig too much in soft sand, so I have never tried that. I might start practicing. So far it is strictly 54° mid bounce in soft sand and 58° low bounce from hard-packed sand. We have a lot of the latter in my area, because the company, which provided all the golf clubs around Vienna, Austria with bunker sand stopped that line of business after they were bought by a bigger international company which deemed it "not profitable" Can you believe that? right now, everybody is desperatly searching for a new supplier. 😫

    Back in 2016, chipping use to cost me 3-4 shots a round easily then i acquired the original C and S smart sole Wedges from Cleveland they took all the stress out of the short game for me. Thinking about missing the green on approach and having to chip would effect those shots as well, my approach game got better just due to not worrying about potential chips.

    Good explanation of the different wedge options. Curious on your thoughts on which wedges (quantity and lofts) players at different skill levels should have in their bags. I understand the importance of gapping but wondering if some players are better off with a single wedge after their gap wedge vs two. Personally I like stopping at sand wedge (56) and do better around the green if I don't fool around with anything with more loft than my 50 degree gap wedge unless I have go over something.

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Місяць тому +1

      Hi Douglas, mainly its down to the golfer and how well they uses their wedges with gapping being a priority but also how they perform around the green. Some feel better with say a 52 and 58, yet others like myself like running a fuller compliment at 50,54 and 58. It just gives me a few more options around the green and on approach. However if you are someone will a bit more imagination and ability to be able to be more creative then a smaller amount of wedges would work as well 👍

      Yeah thats a long time to wait for shafts especially as lets face it its not like they are a manufacturer that holds 50+ shaft options in stock. But it's most likely a shaft manufacturer driven supply problem so it would be felt by other manufacturers that stock that option to. Let me know how you get on 👍

    How would you rate the Cleveland wedges up against the Mizuno S - 23 wedges?

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Місяць тому +1

      Different in their approach. Mizuno runs 3 main wedge types. the JPX in range wedges, the S23 and also T24. Both the later are more along the players side of things. Cleveland has more options when it comes to their range. 7 against 3. If you are someone that fits into the 3 the you'd argue that the other 4 are pointless, yet a lot of golfers fall in between the grey areas and that's where Cleveland have all bases covered 👍

    I was fitted with a P790 compared to my current speed blades at club champion with a recoil dart 90 stiff. But it doesn’t make sense. I have a ball speed of 107 wit my 6i and the new club only has 3800 spin compare to my gamer at 4500 and peak height is on,y 62 vs 70 on my gamer. I’m driving the ball 10 yards longer but…I wonder if it’s shaft or club head

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Місяць тому +1

      Club head absolutely.... With the given numbers you provided, that absolutely isn't an upgrade. Great if there could be a 10 yard gain with the new clubs but really if the peak height goes down and also spin, especially into the 3 thousands that there would be little to no control of the ball into the green..... Keep with your current gamers 👍🏻

    I am toe biased with my wedges, so when I swapped my Callaway MD5 to Mizuno S23, the toe help has made a clear difference on my mishits.
    Just to say, why not let your wedge choice match what you are playing with the rest of the set. If you are a blade player, then 'blade' wedges, if a cavity back player in the irons, consider going with the more helpful versions...?
