Here in the Klamath Mountains of No CA and So OR that basalt is frequent enough that I recognized those rocks right away. I will be exploring them this yearthaniks to you Dan, this was a great geology lesson!. Thanks for the great videos.
I have seen some olivene in the basalt around White Pass, WA. Along highway 12 there is a big round mountain.. Goose egg mountain east of the Dam at Rimrock Lake... this was the remaining magma chamber of an ancient volcano.. I imagine that is the source of the olivene/peridot. I also have seen spots on the mountain where the heavy frost is melted.. there may be hot springs or fumaroles.. lots of them near the peak of Bethel Ridge.. on the West and SW side.

Hey dan I mined peridot once with a work acquaintance his clam was at the top of the basalt column under about 18 inches of overburden he had dug down about another 1/2 to 3/4 meter to get to the pockets but mostly searched for small veins of the dark green the basalt at the top of the column was Less dense and easier to break and dig through might be worth trying
I'm curious! You said that the olivine turns red or rusty when it close to the surface of the bedrock. My question is does it matter if the bedrock you are cracking open does it matter if it's in the sun facing south. I'm finding it all being rusty in color. I'm also curious if I remove the top layer of boulders to get down to less exposed bedrock if I might find better clusters sockets of olivine? And peridot. Also the bedrock is an old deposit, there are no catacombs above the bedrock field I'm working.

How does it work in BC as far as claims and stuff? I know how placer gold claims work, I had one with a friend a few years back and - is it any different with gems? Can I just "prospect" and collect and sell gems legally as just a regular Joe Blow, or do I need some kind of freeminer license? And I assume I'd have to watch out for other's claims and stay off...

for your information,if you travel to the Arizona fire agate spot, the fire ants push fanciable peridot out of there nests ,some are over an inch round, you just have to carefully picking them up.

I have stumbled upon your UA-cam channel and am really enjoying it as I am from the Okanagan and a lot of the areas you go to are familiar to me :-) Now from what I understand there are areas that we can not rock hound as there are claims, but I am hoping that you could tell me where we are able to look, just for recreation, the govt web site is down, or if you could lead me in the right direction to gain this info. They will be much more generous with their locale information (not staking everything they find for personal profit). They'll even teach you how to pronounce the name of what you're hunting for so that you don't sound as stupid as this guy!

Dan i love ur videos... i would love to start prospecting for gold if that if what u call it........i live in Tijuana i am a technician for a local internet provider and i have a couple a questions and i also would really love to get advice on how to look for certain material suck as gold and gemstones of any kind, ive done some reaserch on a certain area and would like to ask in what type of ground or stone can gold be found besides quartz.????.. and also in what type of soild or rocks can gems can be located i ve seen lots of your videos and kinda have a general idea but id love to get more details info if possible .... I found some quartz rocks and after having them for more than a year in our yard one morning after seing one of your videos i started smashin the rocks with other bigger rocks .. i was making so much noise cause some of the quartz where kinda big, so my wife herd and came to see whats going on and she got so mad cause she saw me smashing all the pretty rocks we brought .from a trip..... but..... then i broke apart this really beatiful quartz i was sure i was gonna regret it... i looked like red inside, white outside with a lot of tranparicy so after breaking it ...we found like really thin layers of what i thinks is gold ... so we where like wooooowww i would love to show u a pictures and get feedback. Also if you have the time would like to know wich type and brand of metal detector do u you recommend for rocky soil or montains/hills?
I do not know. I feel like and idiot. I have 80 acres of basalt. Alot of crushed and weathered. But I do not see these nests in there. All my basalt is a solid homogenous hard to drill hard to crush hard to make gravel. And here you are. The guy even shows in details what and where. Anyhow may be this gem search is like picking up mushrooms(I am good at it) just do not have right eye for spotting the gems.
I have a question for you.. I live in Virginia and recently I went to the river and brought home two buckets of sand.. After running it through my sluice box and I panned it down I found some little small silver round balls and they are not birdshot or sinkers.. what could that be?
I have basalt like this on my property, they are filled with cream colored nodes and pockets of clear or white crystals. any idea of what they are ? I'm gonna have to see if I can find green ones now 😆
Might be natrolite or zeolites. Not all basalt has peridotite or lherzolite (rock principally composed of olivine/peridot) xenoliths. If basalt has potential for gem peridot, you will easily find pieces of peridot-bearing xenoliths embedded in the basalt.
Big dan i have found a peridot location in arizona its not been explored but surface keeps being carried out the vein is about 6' wide and around 100 feet long its open ground i was going to post it if I found anyone interested in it i have been debating on whether or not to claim it for myself or 7500 to sell it

Not all basalts bear the mantle xenoliths (the olivine nests) They are mainly found in alkaline basalts.
If you still own this site, you will have to begin busting open these bolders.

Not all basalt has olivine in it. Only vuggy olivine basalt with the right underground environment will create Olivine nests like these.
