  • This video is a departure from my usual topics, but I learned to fly many years ago, and I feel an affinity for planes of all kinds. And the dry, desert country of Arizona around Mesa is a great place for an airport - and an aviation museum. Arizona, after all, is Out West.
Walking into the huge hanger from the lobby is an awesome experience. Ah, yes, airplanes!
The place is clean and bright and so are the aircraft. There are many explanatory posters, and there are many displays and exhibits other than airplanes. There are many talkative “docents” present to answer questions and guide you through an enjoyable visit. The fellow I talked to also was a pilot, as I assume many of the staff are. The museum covers WWI through the Vietnam War.
There are several airplanes on the ramp outside. You can tour the inside of their C-47 aircraft. It had been modified as transportation for corporate executives soon after WWII.
But the highlight of the museum is their gleaming, well-maintained B-17, an important bomber from WWII. This particular vehicle is called “Sentimental Journey.” Complete with a painting of Betty Grable as nose art. And you can crawl inside this warplane! It is cramped! I am 5’10” and I went in on my hands and knees. I bumped my head and elbows regularly. I developed a much greater appreciation for the men who flew these aircraft in WWII.
The museum offers paid rides on the B-17 and other aircraft. Yes, many of their airplanes actually fly.
Enjoy the video of my visit to the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona Museum in Mesa!
