I was micro-minuature solder certified. One thing they never taught us in school was the use of solder wick to do exactly what you are doing here.

Except the method here is not like using solder wick. He's not wicking the solder into the wire, (and solid wire can be used) he's using the wire essentially to extend the iron so that it melts all pins at once, at which point the component can fall out or be pulled out. You then have to go back and remove the solder from the holes, with suction tool or solder wick before fitting the replacement component.
This method actually solves a problem you encounter sometimes with solder wick, in which you wick out a lot of the solder, but not quite enough to unstick the pins. Now you are still stuck trying to melt all the pins simultaneously, but it's harder because most of the solder has been removed so the pins are harder to heat..
Anyhow, this method isn't for every situation, often solder wick or sucker is better. But it's another technique that can come in very handy!

I like this method and have been using it lately. Do you find that the semiconductors (transistors, opamps, etc) can be resused or are damaged by the length of time heat is applied to them to get them to drop out?

Thanks, is there a practical limit to how many pins this will work for since the heat has to be distributed across all pins?
Hi , thank you for your comment. I've just done a 2 row connector with 25 quite large pins . Found a really good way to remove these just with a soldering iron , will post this sometime soon . About to post a video showing a difficult ps2/ usb connector that has 18 pins all spread out . Got a great method for removing these and similar connectors just with an iron . This methods genius . So basically what I've showed here is easy compared to what I know I can remove with just an iron . Thanks again 👍

but that Dallas chip is in DIP, it just show desoldering one side and it falls, how about the other side?
Hi , thank you for your comment. I am confused by your comment . If you Google this component and get a datasheet it will clearly show you it is a single row of joints that this particular Dallas 1603 component has . It also clearly shows this in the video and that's why heating up this SINGLE row allows it to drop out . So there is no other row . I hope that clears up your misguided comment . Thanks again 👍
@@mrsolderfix3996 Hi..I was into repairs of motherboards since the early 90s up until now.. Its very common that some motherboards uses this Dallas clock chip (forgot the exact model, sorry because its already 3 decades ago) back then and when its internal battery die, we have to desolder them to replace, but not as easy as this since its in Dual in Line packaging, 2 rows of pins though the other side have lesser pins.. and we put IC sockets so it will be easy to replace this chip in the future (but it never come).. but there are also other brands of motherboards that already uses IC socket, so it became easy to replace these chips..

Hi , thank you for your comment, much appreciated. No , you can do this removal method with a solid wire ( not Stranded )
The idea is to just get all the joints melted at the same time which the wire helps achieve . I do see people doing this without the wire , going along the pins but you end up chasing the solder . Having the wire enables solder to stay on every joint at the same time , hope that helps , thanks again 👍
