"Destroyed by madness. Anxiety is Freedom". Richey had a crystal ball when he wrote that one. VERY prophetic. I listened to this track for the first time yesterday and was struck by those lyrics. There's some excellent lyrics on that whole CD. Worth digging out to have a look.
Except for the part where anxiety isn't even remotely freedom. True anxiety separates you from everything and everyone you love and leaves you stranded in a Hell dimension.
i was at work listening to the Radio One Road Show 1991 and this was on - blew me away - best record i'd heard since the days of punk rock - this was punk for the 90s and I loved it - best manics single
remember seeing the video when it first came out and thought american band but the lyrics were interesting, little did i realise they lived 40 miles away from me and turned into my favourite band of all time.
I don't care if some of the lyrics sound like they were written by some angsty 17-year-old. It's still sounds like it was written by one of the smartest goddamn 17-year-olds who'd eventually go on to write some of the best lyrics in modern rock. "Love your mess and adore your failure." I'll take a failure this vital and alive sounding over bloodless studio perfection any day.
Besides after all the cheesy 80s glam and sparkly neon SHITE we had to deal with, for a kid in the middle of wales, england hell anywhere to hear this it was a real wake up call i reckon. you had to be there
Though the whole first album is great, for me, Stay Beautiful--the song, coupled with the video--sums up the band the best. "We're a mess of eyeliner and spraypaint, DIY destruction and Chanel chic" seems like a mission statement that the band had at the time, but as the band evolved and got older (and perhaps when the rock n' roll dream had ended for Richey), something about it encapsulates the band at their most enduring crossroads: your youth won't go on forever.
It's only two sentences. And if they'd used a semicolon after "best" it would've been one sentence. But I agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly. The Manics in this era are up there amongst the greatest rock bands ever. (In my humble estimation.)

Richey Edwards was an intelligent guy academically, well read, good with words, however, he couldn't seem to find a way to live, he couldn't find peace of mind. A life without peace of mind is miserable, or if you are feeling tormented by guilt or shame about something, or maybe its just your own thoughts that are driving you crazy on a daily basis, then its a tough existence. If that is how your life is then your life will be very hard and will often lead to massive depression, im not just talking about ritchie, but anyone, I know how it can be.
