Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Shed some skin for the fear within
Is starting to hurt me with everything
Freed from the memory
Escape from our history, history
[Chorus]
And I just hope that you can forgive us
But everything must go
And if you need an explanation
Then everything must go
[Verse 2]
I look to the future it makes me cry
But it seems too real to tell you why
Freed from the century
With nothing but memory, memory
[Chorus]
And I just hope that you can forgive us
But everything must go
And if you need an explanation
Then everything must go
[Bridge]
Freed us eventually
Just need to be happy, happy
[Chorus]
And I just hope that you can forgive us
But everything must go
And if you need an explanation
Then everything must go
And I just hope that you can forgive us
But everything must go
And if you need an explanation
Then everything must go
A lot of people ask (when I say, "I love the Manics") , "Don't you find them depressing?". No I don't. Is it just me?! I find them uplifting, and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck listening to that voice and the tunes!
Emma Their music is not depressing. You’re right.
They are a very much underrated band. If people actually listened then they would know.
When depressed in mood they lift me, but when high in mood they make me reflect on the bad times so I can appreciate the good times more.
100%!!!
Depressing..? How do they sound depressing?? People are strange
As a Japanese person, it is very natural that the image of cherry blossoms used in this song and in the video is closely linked to the death of a member of this band. Since the time of the samurai, cherry blossoms falling all at once have symbolised the image of death without attachment to life. And whenever they sang about the Buddhist concept of the impermanence of all things, it left a lasting impression of mourning and regret for the young man who had died before them, and the determination of those left behind who must nevertheless move on.
I thought it was also an ironic reference to Chairman Mao's let a hundred flowers bloom speech, and that the loss would have to lead to new ideas. I accept I could be wrong: is that how cherry blossoms spread their seeds?
@@troppmann quite a lot of plants drop stuff onto the ground to reproduce
Lovely but this song was released 2 years after Richey went missing. Nobody thought he was dead at that time. I doubt they knew of the traditional significance of the cherry blossom. More likely that since this song is clearly about him, everyone knew of his love of Japan, the cherry blossoms were iconic of that
@@mysteryegg340 given the Manics, I'd not be surprised if they knew all the symbolism.
The tree is a reference to the one which was by a house the band spent a lot of time in. I do believe it was between where Wire/Edwards lived.
This is what I want for Valentine’s Day
The ultimate ‘moving on’ song.
Keep walking and don’t look back.
Pure catharsis, best symbolised by that girl smashing the giant clock with that bass towards the end.
We let too much cling on to us and weigh us down, worrying about how much time we have and how much of it we think we’ve wasted.
All we have is life time.
Go.
The clock is set at 5.32 as well, the exact time I was born. Not even joking!!
@@paulpattison1782 i dont think thats 5:32

Love the little tributes to Richey right from the start! Walking past his guitar and the cherry blossom tree. Such a dignified way and great song to say goodbye.
Really? Oh my. I will check that out.
Magnificient song made even better knowing that. Thank you.
Simply asking, and would much rather hear your take, please, and 4real, explain the cherry blossom tree?
And, AWESOMENESS....
ABOUT
the guitar
THANKS!!!!!
from Canada,
Kevan.
@kevandalzell7906 The cherry blossom tree is a reference to the tree that was outside the house, which the band spent time in when they started out, and was also I believe between where Wire and Edwards lived.
@@listianocrowe that is fantastic; thanks for the reply!!!
"The Real Driving Simulator."
I came looking for this reference to Gran Turismo. The original, always!
Yes boss

A powerful anthem for personal change and starting afresh. That's what it speaks to me. I love how lyrics can be applied in a variety of ways to our own lives and experiences.
Still gives me goosebumps after 26 years x
youtube users are missing out big time by not listening to manic street preachers, a criminally underrated band
Agree Christopher
I could not agree more. This song... all the feels.
saw them and they came out after to meet fans . Idiot with gf told them they were crap.
My mate 6'4" loves to fight we just looked at the cretin!
Power of good men and good art overcame!
@@peterrothe1556 what did the Manic Street Preachers say to the guy that said they were crap?
I don't think you get how youtube works
Still listening in 2023.
Hope your in.a better place Mr James.... as hopefully I am . Empathy to your feeling inside all these years on... i still wander what happened....
Never got to play gran turismo? Think you'd hate the world today.
The most underrated band ever. Fan since 1992
How did you reach that strange conclusion?
we still miss you Richey
Always
Gran Turismo: The Real Driving Simulator
A legacy and a legendary franchise born in 1997! Thank you, Manic Street Preachers, for composing the song that would appear in the opening of the very first Playstation video game that would change racing forever!!
Well it was actually made for their unfortunately passed band member
This song gives me goose bumps. I have followed the Manic since I was a little child and people didn't know them much where I am from, Spain. I can't wait to see them live again in UK.
I never heard the original song of the intro of Gran Turismo 1997. I played that game in 97.....but now in 2023 I heard the original, this. And Its awesome. No age pass fot it
Remembering this video from nearly 30 years ago recently helped me make my mind up when buying a Fender Jazz bass in tobacco sunburst.
That's exactly my bass, too! I'd rather have the Ric in this video, though.
I really like this sentiment. I put it into the context of them losing Richie - "i hope that you can forgive us, but everything must go" Sounds like, yes, we've suffered a great loss. But we're putting that behind us and starting afresh.
It's about Thatcher privatising the public services during the 80s.

Imagine being a fan in 1996. You know the Manics as just a dark, angry, artsy punk type band and then they put this album out which is so different to anything they've done before, a lot less rocky and more pop/Motown influenced but maybe their most poignant work yet, full of huge anthems that are so defiant of their past tragedy.
It's just like 'The Show Must Go On" but from the Manics. Fantastic.
One of the best albums ever recorded

They're playing at Rockin' On Sonic, Tokyo, 5 January 2025, in case you didn't know!
Thanks for blessing Gran Turismo 1 with this song. My childhood 🎶
I've seen these live twice now. One of the best band's I've seen live. Amazing!
They're an amazing live band.
Fair-Do's... Where to? (Caerphilly ;-) LegendS ✊
That smashing of the clock with the bass and the liberating freedom and relieve on her face... man is this a good song to end a chapter of your life and start afresh with a bang!

I remember when this came out, I was in the old ivy bush pub in cwmaman, aberdare. South wales. It was on the jukebox. Loved that time, but was really sad because I knew that Richey was gone 😔.
Yeah, a fucking tragedy...
His lyrics cut so deep, that I wonder sometimes, that the only way we could have had THE HOLY BIBLE album, was from a deep pain that only someone as sensitive as him could come up with. He dragged the depth of his soul to find the truth.
Perhaps the greatest comeback song ever. Missing Richey, but this showed that by no means were the band finished.
Oh HOW I WISH RICHEY suddenly appears HAPPIER than ever❤...
Hap-ee! 💔
I have the gut wrenching feeling that he's under the water at the bottom of the Severn Bridge
@@georgecampbellvideos3517 probs
@@georgecampbellvideos3517 .....sigh... never really believed that for all those years; but looking back....its pretty obvious....dammit Richey!
@@georgecampbellvideos3517 I'm convinced he's living in a kibbutz in Israel or somewhere in India. I don't believe he killed himself. We all have opinions of course. There's no way of knowing. No closure.
I was in college when this song came out.
I just love that epic quality they had, those Phil Spector inspired drums, James' voice, the drama of Nicky's lyrics.
Still listening in 2024.!
Brilliant album and from it the title track itself. Everything indeed must go.....including the 54 people who disliked this song
Great song, great video and on a bad day, very emotional with it's 'goodbye' to Richey
A eulogy to Richie I think.
The most important band of the last 30 years , they’re always relevant , never sell out
They change my life and reaffirm always
Sao fantásticos
Was fortunate enough to see them life at this time....what you would expect and more..
I love this song so much.An anthem to endings and beginnings.Thank you for the songs Manics you are still the best.
The whole album is so well written with all the strings that they all have that epic sound
Loving those drum fills
This song is nostalgic. Takes me back to 2007-2009
Takes me back to 1996.
i was playing this song on repeat two years ago after my best friend in the whole world ever went to be with god. it helped me come to terms with it, something about it felt cathartic to me. understanding that letting go is OK. arien, i'm sorry i couldn't save you from whatever awful thing happened that fateful night. i still miss the hell out of you. there's a part inside of me that's still broken and won't ever go back together. but that's OK. because how beautiful was it just to have known you and have loved you at all. i wouldn't trade it for the world. thank you for your love. it'll stay with me for the rest of my life. rest beautifully, my beautiful.

Yeah, thanks hun xxx
Thank you, Alex!)))
Alex Reid thanks for the Lyrics!🤘
There's been many bands and songs/ productions that have aimed for "Spector-esque", but this closely approximates it better than anything since the late 60's---everything just slathered completely across the music. The triumph/ tragedy thing just keeps on pushing and pulling with this. One of my faves of all time.
I keep coming back to this unbelievably brilliant song. I saw them a few years back supporting Suede and I was hooked. It's what everyone else has said. Criminally underrated.
Just saw them in Llandudno last night, great live band.........forgot how many songs of theirs I knew from my youth!
I love everything, Richey
This video was off of YT for a long while. Finally happy they brought it back.
God we 4give u,, cos u sav us, we all mis Richy, so much,, but u lead us in to Light, xx 💋 I'm 52 now it f kills me this ,
Thank you- Finally time to Live and be Happy- Happy 😊 Please may you all Live and Prosper ❤✨💨💎💫💐
Richey is the blossom tree
....just a cherry blossom tree
One of things that's great about this song is the pace of the rhythm with its wall of sound type arrangement
Speaking of wall of sound, doesn't Sean's drumming remind you of Hal Blaine on this one?
We miss you richey forever in our hearts
Cried my eyes out singing along to this at glasto
This song was in a dream once... weirdly vivid.
Me too!
I bought 6 albums when I was a teenager & 1st started working, through a music catalogue called Brittania music (I think) I was hooked on that catalogue when this album was released, imagine the history I went through, as it wasn't just Manic Street Preachers Everything Must Go Album it was Radiohead's Ok Computer, Kula Shaker, I just can't remember the rest now but every one was just, WTH is this, I was shook to my core when I first heard this, I was living in history man. To this day it's one of, if not the best album ever recorded. What a time, 90's.
Just remembered 4th album I got at this time, Ocean Colour Scene Moseley Shoals, epic historical time
I remember creating mixtapes monthly with a little help as I didn’t understand the process of creating them onto my MP3 player. This song was one of them.
It took me 22 years to find out this song and hear it's melody....for some reason I didn't look for the title back then.... one of the best songs ever of the manic street preachers...
PS1...disc in...hearing this, bliss.
Could easily of been a James bond theme song.. pure class!
Even the title is perfect for a James Bond film
I look to the future, it makes me cry.
He said the thing! The thing from the song!
WE'RE GONNA MAKE IT TO THE HIGH SPEED RING WITH THIS BANGER
Legendary tune from summer 1996.
1996!! now I do feel old 😕
2 Years before i was born.
I cried... what a masterpiece!
Classic, and such a sad song
Splendid. Love the nod to Rumblefish in the video.
Such a great album, such a great band. I borrowed this from my then gf, in 97. Oh great times
Used to live in Cardiff and went to see the play in the Sherman theatre, lucky enough to have a chat with Patrick Jones. Living in Gemany again I still embrace your opinion and music. Thank you!
This is my anthem right here right now - 2023 - with the current situation on earth 🌎- this is a very important message to everyone -
I hope you can forgive us - and if you need an explanation? - no one listens
Then everything must go - go riddins
Best intro song of gran turismo, thanks for the memories especially winning the championships and special events, and the ups and downs on passing the license tests
Such a great song.
Love the intro of Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier that leads into this song beautifully.

@@vermilliongecko Hang on, I was right. You're talking about the album, I'm on about this song. The start of this video is the beginning and end of Elvis Impersonator.
One of my fav songs......love this band.
Just booked tickets for Leeds, can't wait.
Rest in piece Richey, World greatest song writer.
This song is amazing. One of Nicky Wire's finest
Greatest band of all time..
The songs from this band just hit me in a different way . It sounds political at times but in the best kind of way . Thank you so much for the feeling your music gives me .
It brings me a nostalgia and a hope that I can’t really find elsewhere .
They washed away the past with dignity and sensitivity with this one
A wonderful very deep full of meanings clip.

mid 90s..we were young, unstable but not afraid of anything.
Now I can't just stand for boring-shameless-tacky-useless bluffers who share the space for bread in the daytime. (People call them "colleagues") I miss those days that I could choose every single friend whom I talk with. We could share our taste without any explanation. All of us loved this band.
This is why I love UA-cam and Google. I never had found it if it wasn't for them.
I got into a fight in 95 or 96 and I got stabbed in my chest after slipping in and out of contiosness all night hearing the consultants saying I wouldn't make it I woke to this song never forgotten it since 😊😊😊
What a great song their standard is incredible
Had this song in my head all day, brilliant! :)
Great song! I love it and every time I would play manic Street Preachers, I would defiantly play this song
a superb album. a masterpiece
Another song that was playing as I was going through the shopping centre. Not heard this for a while. fits the times well...everything is going...going...will it be gone soon?!.
This is awesome guys. Thanks for rocking! 🙃
