The ultimate ‘moving on’ song. Keep walking and don’t look back. Pure catharsis, best symbolised by that girl smashing the giant clock with that bass towards the end. We let too much cling on to us and weigh us down, worrying about how much time we have and how much of it we think we’ve wasted. All we have is life time. Go.
A lot of people ask (when I say, "I love the Manics") , "Don't you find them depressing?". No I don't. Is it just me?! I find them uplifting, and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck listening to that voice and the tunes!
A powerful anthem for personal change and starting afresh. That's what it speaks to me. I love how lyrics can be applied in a variety of ways to our own lives and experiences.
Imagine being a fan in 1996. You know the Manics as just a dark, angry, artsy punk type band and then they put this album out which is so different to anything they've done before, a lot less rocky and more pop/Motown influenced but maybe their most poignant work yet, full of huge anthems that are so defiant of their past tragedy.
Love the little tributes to Richey right from the start! Walking past his guitar and the cherry blossom tree. Such a dignified way and great song to say goodbye.
Simply asking, and would much rather hear your take, please, and 4real, explain the cherry blossom tree? And, AWESOMENESS.... ABOUT the guitar THANKS!!!!! from Canada, Kevan.
@kevandalzell7906 The cherry blossom tree is a reference to the tree that was outside the house, which the band spent time in when they started out, and was also I believe between where Wire and Edwards lived.
As a Japanese person, it is very natural that the image of cherry blossoms used in this song and in the video is closely linked to the death of a member of this band. Since the time of the samurai, cherry blossoms falling all at once have symbolised the image of death without attachment to life. And whenever they sang about the Buddhist concept of the impermanence of all things, it left a lasting impression of mourning and regret for the young man who had died before them, and the determination of those left behind who must nevertheless move on.
I thought it was also an ironic reference to Chairman Mao's let a hundred flowers bloom speech, and that the loss would have to lead to new ideas. I accept I could be wrong: is that how cherry blossoms spread their seeds?
Lovely but this song was released 2 years after Richey went missing. Nobody thought he was dead at that time. I doubt they knew of the traditional significance of the cherry blossom. More likely that since this song is clearly about him, everyone knew of his love of Japan, the cherry blossoms were iconic of that
