How to make DIY teacup candles, Vlog craft evening

- Опубліковано 13 січ 2025
- Hands up who loves a good craft evening. My work buddies and I were chatting about a craft evening for Autumn as the dark nights can be so long. We had a shot at making some vintage teacup candles as this has been on my to-do list for ages. These were actually easier than I expected and I am quite impressed with our first attempt at them. I have put together a Vlog and you can see how we made them. This is a great DIY for reusing old china as once the candles burn through you can remove any wax and make them again.

Hi Catherine xx to stop the sinking middle is to burn candles long enough to turn the whole circumference of the wax back to liquid, otherwise you get that dent in the middle which will burn that way to the end wasting all the wax round the edges, if you understand what I'm saying? But by burning the candle long enough to melt the whole top of candle it will reset flat so when you light it again next time always burn to the edges of the vessel. Oh I hope you know what I mean? I'm useless at instructions lol. I actually found this out by my own mistakes! Hope this helps. Much love & God bless you abundantly xx
How fun with friends, they look amazing. I don’t have friends where I live 😢 I’m in the middle of the woods & the women around me are busy with their own lives and family. I miss my sisters but that is life when you marry someone who lives across the US from my family.
When I had a cat I got tired of him on the counter so someone told me to keep water in a spray bottle and spray him with it and it worked. In the evening I make lots of no-sew ornaments for my Arts and Craft show plus decorated candy canes. I try my best to stay busy whether it's working on my brother's house or doing crafts. Again thanks for sharing I will need to try these sometime. You inspire us all to make things........
I think I still have my Mothers tea cups. Good idea, Cathrine! I love scented candles.😍
These are beautiful. I love this project! I admire your adventurous spirit and trying new things.
My daughter and daughter in law during Thanksgiving Break are going to make DIY teacup candles. Thanks 🙏 for the inspiration.
What a lovely china collection. Love how you used them for candle making. Tfs from Virginia, USA. Take care.
Lovely ... I like how the glow.
They are gorgeous! After dinner I go to my craft room, search Pinterest and order supplies, I scrapbook, use my Cricut Explore 2 and have started making Christmas stuff!
I use a metal bowl over a pan of water to melt the wax. Also skewers work to keep the wick in place while you're pouring. If you have silicone cupcake liners, you could also make wax melts to use in an oil burner.
You can also buy good quality tea lights, pop out the wick, and melt down to suit your needs.
Love the glow of the tea cups when the wick is lit.
I make my own cleaners. I just use rubbing alcohol, Dawn dish soap (or any good quality dish soap) and a little water, put it in a spray bottle ( I like using IKEA spray bottles). I also just put individual paper towels in a plastic container then pour over a mixture of rubbing alcohol and essential oil. Cheap and easy and a great degreaser and disinfectant. I absolutely LOOOOVE your candles !!!! They look beautiful all lit up
Luv, luv this idea. My sister and I like to go to antique shops and find individual teacups with saucers. Shared your diy so we can do on a weekend. And of course, when fall and winter come, we bake, bake bake! Coming from Texas, that's what we do! 💖
Love the way the light shines through the thin China tfs xx
Its winter time hete in South Africa ...and now im trying all your nice projects, out thankyou for sharing the cute ideas with us...bbbbrrrrrrr!!!
I want to make these with my granddaughters, great idea! Thank you.
Wow. I will have to try that. Love how they glow through the china
So pretty the way they glow!
Great for gift giving! Bake anything with pumpkin & spice!! Muffins, bread, scones, pancakes, waffles, cookies and freeze them for later!!
I have a friend that used to have a candle business years ago. I remember her pouring so much, letting that set for a while then finish pouring to top. Maybe that'll help? Anyhow, I love how it illuminates the china! Great idea girl!
Yes, I think that will help, thanks for watching Helene x
Yea you are right but you put little holes in then fill them up
I thought the same thing about the china; it's so lovely lit up!
Brilliant and so pretty! Your so talented! Thanks for sharing!!
The teacups have such a lovely glow when the candles are lit!

I got inspired to make some homemade soaps, I have tons and tons of tea cups so who knows what might happen next!? Thank you darling for making such great videos!
Thanks for the love Darla! x
Hi Catherine, well done. Another great vlog. It maybe your wick that burns too quick, I think they come in different material that have different levels they burn at. Thanks and looking forward to your next vlog. Take care Tina
I love all of that china....
They turn out so pretty i think I’m going to give this a try thanks for sharing I just join your channel love the things you make 💕
Thanks so much for subbing Brenda ❤️❤️❤️
I love your channel and always get such inspiration from you! I make seashell candles and will be making the teacup candles next, as they will go well with my china collection for setting a pretty table. I also followed your soap making video awhile back and I still enjoy making them! Thank you for sharing your amazing style and ideas! You are so creative and inspiring 🌸
Those would make lovely gifts! I use to make candles when I was a teenager. It was my first crafting business. :D I loved making interesting candles. My niece learned from me and made candles for guest gifts at her wedding. Love These!!!
Your candles are gorgeous; I love the china you used and with the golden glow of the burning candles, I just love it. I made candles years ago and you have to top off the candle after it sets/hardens to remedy the center sink. I think I used paraffin at the time.
If you have any candles that are partially burnt, you can chop them into pieces and remelt, then pour. You could layer them if you don't have enough of one to fill your container. Just let each layer set b/4 pouring the next one.
I spend the evenings watching you and other youtubers with my earbuds while my husband watches TV. I do craft during the day though.
My next diy is going to be faux cupcakes. They look simple enough; you use the expanding foam that comes in a can and lightweight spackle for the frosting. The Pink Tree youtube channel has some great vids showing how and there are some other good ones on youtube too, but she's my fave.
She recently showed how to make faux pumpkin pie. I love having fake food as part of a decor vignette.
.
I think a tiny bit of bluetack is used to secure the wick plate to the base 😊
Hello Catherine! Those came out beautiful! Love them in the teacups. For your first time, you did a fantastic job! Hope you are enjoying your evening.🕯☕️🍷

Hi Catherine well you did a good job the first time making candles. practice makes perfect.lol
they looked so pretty ,you get tunneling with a draft of if you burn and dont let the wax melt right across before blowing them out, my new learning craft is faux cakes lol they look super pretty and you dont gain the pounds eating them lol xx
Hi Catherine; a lovely craft evening to make tea up candles. I really love environmentally friendly products. I steep orange and sometimes lemon peel in white vinegar ; leave for two weeks and clean up with this solution. Of course test first but I find great for worktops windows and bathroom etc.I think your candles will make nice gifts.Thank for these delightful candles , try sweet orange essential oil.Thank you for video and blessings and hugs and greetings. xoxo
Oh sweet orange oil sounds dab for Autumn, thanks for watching!

Hey Catherine ! Cute cute idea using the teacups for candles ! Thanks for the tips too , its gloomy here where I live too rainy and yucky out ! I'm a spring and summer girl too I'm not liking the loss of daylight either ! Enjoy your evening hugs !!!!
Great idea! I am going to try it in wine glasses too!
Looks pretty easy...great job...tfs...🌺🌺🌺...I do a lot of direct crafts ...crocheting, diys, coloring, puzzles, get ready for Xmas, lots of family gifts to make...💖
Hi sweet girl..the melt n pour it's easy to make. Plus you can re melt the wax n put more oil..I've done it..also u can put a little color. I don't recommend putting in the fridge the quick change of temperature might affect the way the wax hardened..but they look beautiful. If you have an old candles you can melt them mix it with these..the ideas are endless. Blessings.
i usualy throw an autumn party i get loads of leaves and scatter them through the house lots of autumnal gifts for freinds xxx
Hello Catherine, since you had made several DIY with teacups, I thought you had already done a candle one 😊. Getting cosy with the cold coming up. Candles and blankets.

Oh that looks so fun!! I group of crafty friends and we get together once a month and work on our own projects (one knits, one brings hand sewing, another does crochet and I usually do cross stitching or embroidery) and chat away!! 💜
Loved this 👍xx
They are so pretty,i make them also ; )
They're so pretty!! Great job!!😃👍💖
Lovely craft, I was thinking of making candles myself, it looks like a fun and easy project! Love and hugs!
Thank you, thanks for watching x
How pretty they look all lit up. That looked like a fun project to make! My local craft store sells special scented liquid specifically for candles. It really smells wonderful. Maybe they'll have the same in your neck of the woods...?
They make the dark evenings so cozy
Thanks Patricia! x
Whenever I have made candles, I let them cool and then I top them off to fill in the dip that seems to happen. I also will buy pillar candles at the thrift store and melt them and pure them in pretty containers. It is a cheap was to make candles.
Oh super cute❤️ I was always to scared to do this because it looked so complicated, but I think I’ll try this you made it look easier then some videos I’ve seen. Have a great day hun. Oh and btw the China is so pretty
Definitely give this a go, so rewarding x
Lovely idea Catherine going to have a go 💕
They turned out beautifully! Love your accent! From Missouri, USA
Thanks Cheryl x thanks for watching x
They are beautiful, especially the glow brings out the beauty of the porcelain and the pattern. I would really like if you would do a follow up after you have completely used them up. Some questions i would have are 1, will the heat from the flame crack the porcelain? 2, will they get soot building up? And 3, did you solve the divot issue? For a while, i was a bit of a candle addict with loads of candles from Yankee Candle, Bath and Bodyworks, etc., and the divots on those can be a big problem. You can get rings to out on top, or use foil (not pretty) to increase the heat at the top so that it melts more evenly. You are also supposed to burn them long enough for the entire top to evenly melt. It also matters about the type of wax, type of wick, etc., but I dont recall which is better and think they all are capable of it. One thing some folks did is instead of burning them, they either used bottom heat or candle lamps, but the beauty of yours is stunning with the glow inside the porcelain. Sorry for babbling, but i will say again that i would love to hear a follow up because, as always, you have created a very lovely project. Thank you!
I absolutely love the glow created in the teacup too & was wondering some of the same things! I bet any soot could be wiped away pretty easily but I was worried about whether the flame might crack the porcelain also. Funnily enough, I was going to suggest tin foil around the rim as well to fix the divots as it's worked for me in the past, but I agree it's not especially aesthetically pleasing.
Made candles before but not in a China tea cup I live them so on my list of to do
Well done Catherine...they look fab...I had the same problem with the wax dipping around the wick. Looking forward to next wks diy
Thanks Gillian, thanks for watching x
Beautiful
Hi dainty, no worries U can always add few drops of essential oil while burning the candle to get extra aroma. And u can also add food colouring to the wax for tat extra decor .
That is a great tip about adding in the oils when it is burning x Thank you x
aww u got the roberts radio after all xx
I did, I got it earlier this month as a treat, so delighted with it! x
Hi Catherine!
I make soaps in spring & fall. In this time, I need to get my Mason jar candles going, and I will try the tea cup ones also, thanks!
Hello to Blondie & Pepsi , ya candles always sink in the middle, ya make a new batch and top it off ya.
Love your videos girl xxx
Hugs willow-sage in canada xxx
lovely TFS
Thanks Mairead, thanks for watching x
Hi Catherine - lovely idea for an autumnal /winters day. I have a cat too but steer away from essential oils as most of them are toxic to cats. And there’s conflicting advice online re the “safe” ones. Love Blondie and Pepsi 😍🐈xx
Hi ,what has happened to your candles is they have tunneled. When you first light them give it enough time for the wax to melt till it touches the side. also trim your Wicks so that they don't smoke keep them about the lengths you have them originally . Hope this is helpful . Love your blogs and your house is beautiful . Thanks ,take care xx 💕
Well done ..they are really cute x
Thanks Pamela, thanks for watching x
Good idea!
Thanks! x

Ohh my sweetheart!! I'm the 486 th liked 😍
Lemongrass... can't live without that smell 😊, did the 1 bag of wax do your cups and jugs? What's the burning time? Look absolutely fab hun..another great video x
Really wanted to make my own candles like this for awhile - but using old jars that I kept around. We are actually having a stitch and bitch tonight. Going to knit on my Christmas jumper (The perfect Christmas jumper on Ravelry if anyone is interested) so it can be done by Christmas.. hehe.. :p
I used to have a handmade candle business and I would suggest finding an online candle supply store to get your wicks, wax and fragrances from. The “tunnelling” issue is likely due to the wrong sized wick. There are all different sized wicks suited to all different sizes of candle jars or in your case teacups. If you want a strong scent it’s best to use proper candle fragrance oils. Good luck 😊
Meagan Orford Is it true that if you don’t burn the candle long enough, depending on the size, that you get tunneling? I read that somewhere and now I don’t light a candle unless I know it’ll be able to burn for a few hours. Thank you in advance! 😊💜
hi catherine did u see the minnimouse tea cups in primark i think its called pennys in ireland xx
OOH, NO, i must go and have a look in the morning, thanks for telling me x
wax shrinks as it hardens, when they get to the soft set stage, dig at the top of it a bit with a cocktail stick to release air, then leave to harden fully, top up and set again
Hi Dainty! I just found your channel last week and I absolutely love it! After watching this I went and found a cute teacup at the thrift shop that will make a perfect gift for a friend. I'll insta you when it's done ;) What kind of camera do you use for videos and do you add any lighting? Your videos looks so good.
Cute
Thanks for watching Teresa x
You need a different sizes of wicks for different diameter of containers!
Yes, larger the diameter of your container, the larger or thicker your wick needs to be.
😊💕
Where did you get the glass spray bottles from? 😍
What fun! I do have a recommendation for your sewing night. Check out this UA-cam video with "Farmhouse on Boone". She made a dress that would be adorable on you. Can't wait to see what you do with spray bottles you bought. 👍😃
Oh I think I saw that video. I am working on a dress at the moment x
Vickie B that is a great channel!
Sweet! You'll have to show it to us. Happy sewing! :)
