In this UA-cam video we look at Scott Henderson guitar gear, Suhr amp (actually the lack of it and replaced by a Fender amp), and the equipment he uses on tour. This is a Scott Henderson 2012 interview and effects pedal demo with a focus on his preference for the Maxon SD-9 Sonic Distortion pedal. Scott Henderson is a fusion and blues guitarist best known for his work with the band Tribal Tech.
The "black sheep" of the 9-Series, the Maxon SD-9 Sonic Distortion pedal offers the best characteristics of transistor and op-amp circuits in one compact unit. The SD9 has unique Low Boost/Hi Boost Tone control that offers more low-end beef than other effect pedals, while its Distortion and Output controls can provide up to 55 dB of gain boost. At low gain settings the Maxon SD-9 functions perfectly as a full-frequency overdrive pedal. Higher gain settings turn the SD-9 into a hand-held monster; providing gut-wrenching grind and singing sustain that will make a clean amp dirty and a dirty amp downright evil.
"The Maxon SD-9 is the best distortion pedal EVER made, period. It has the clarity and punch you get from a pedal, while retaining the low bass you get with amp distortion. The SD-9 is one of the rare pedals which sound equally great on both the neck and bridge pickups, whether they're humbucking or single coil. It's been a very important part of my tone for many years." - Scott Henderson

He is galaxies away from any other fusion guitar player. Perfect tone, phrasing and fun to hear!
I've always liked him more than Gambale, and Gambale is great. I just think Henderson has a more interesting style. Better tone too.
Can't say I'm a fan of everything Scott has done - I prefer his more bluesy stuff. However, his tone, his dedication and his musical honesty are totally inspirational.
"Gain with my Marshall...euh...my Suhr.... "
Lol......;)
If you don't love Scott Henderson, we can't be friends.
Such articulate touch and control; great hands and beautiful tone.
I learn so much from your videos, thank you.
I think you will find that Scott creates his sound using his ears and not his knob! truly one of the most expressive players in business today.
Thanks so much for responding so fast, didn't expect that. You guys are Awesome! I'll be getting my Maxon SD-9 real soon. Be running it into my Snider Chicago with a Strat, can't wait!! Thanks again..
Cheers, Mike
I wanna thank Scott Henderson's parents!
Me too!
Agreed, seen Scott live from the 80's to just this summer and IMHO he's got the best lead tone in the world.
Scott Henderson is a gift to the music world. Identifiable sound/ style....technically advanced and sonically stimulating. Whats to not like?
Awesome clip. Henderson is fantastic. I am curious, other than true bypass switching, what are the differences between the original 9-Series Maxon-built Ibanez SD9 from the 80's and this newer Maxon SD9 version?
Wow. Scott exudes more musicality in 30 seconds that some guitarists can in 10 minutes.
Thank you.... Finally...
Very nice!
...this guy rips, I'm glad I found out about him.
Nice call Kris.. TY for the correction.. :-)
Scott is an extra ordinary player, getting The Maxon today. Kevin & Scott look alike, :) Kevin Looks Like a younger version of Scott. Thanks for the amazing pedal guys!
Ha! I wish I could play like him, younger or older version! :) Please check out our latest video where Oz Noy demos the Sonic Distortion - another amazing player who's loving the SD-9!

Looks like the same guy two decades apart!!
+Kevin Coin Ah, but only if I could play like him...

VERY NICE
So if you don;t like to use pedals with a clean amp, you can use a neutral OD, like a Nobels ODR-1 set to low-gain (as if the amp was just slightly dirty) and then run your pedals into that? Use the ODR-1 and the amp together as a unit.
Jeff Beck is great... but that is a superficial connection that you are making. Henderson's playing is in another harmonic dimension and outside of the work with the whammy bar and pentatonic scales their playing is very dissimilar. They are both equally great in their own thing.
Hi Kevin, great demo of the Maxon SD-9. At the time of this clip, was Scott playing thru a vintage 80's SD-9 or the the newer model (I assume 2012) SD-9? Greatly appreciate the info. Thanks! :)
Thanks Sarge - yeah, SH is pretty amazing! Scott was playing through a stock Maxon SD-9 reissue (meaning 2001 or later production). I'm not sure if he ever used a vintage one - it is my understanding that he actually bought his Maxon SD-9 from Truetone Music in Santa Monica. We started working with him after that...
Thanks! Has anything changed at all since the first run of the stock SD-9 reissue till now or is it the same board and components? :)
sargentppeper The first year of production ('03 if I recall) had a DTDT switch instead of 3PDT - besides that, they are hte same to my knowledge...
No problem.. it's a great pedal.. Mikes mod is awesome also.. just a matter of what you like.
the master!
I believe that is just the way the stage lights are hitting the pedal at that angle
he uses a stock Maxon SD-9. he had a modded one but prefers the original. he says he like the original one and likes to know that wherever he is in the world he can pick up a replacement.
Got an SD9 by chance, but had some experience with the OD808 and I have to say it really sings. The OD808 with the SD9 works like a charm too.
I stack the Maxon SD9 with a TS808 resissue and I gotta agree with you. My modest Princeton Reissue sounds like a monster.
I dig it !
I COULD agree more
Can't argue with Scotts tone, even with an amp that he doesn't use. It looks like he's using his anologman modded SD-9. Wonder if it's the Super and mid pot mode? Anyone know?Awesome for sure!!
Scott is fantastic and so is his tone! I find it strange he's not using the Maxon Valve pedals. I've watched a few videos of'em played next to the regular pcb pedals and you can just hear the valves in them...they sound more alive and more like tube amp overdrive. How come Scott chooses to play the pcb SD9? Any idea...?
This is the pedal he loves.. we've given him every other pedal Maxon makes and he says " The SD-9 is the best pedal period" LOL. you find what you like and what works for you and you stick with it.. :-)
It makes sense...I guess putting it through a dirty channel of a valve amp makes it sound like an extension of the amp's distortion. Thanks for the quick response Sir
I couldn't agree any more...........
Top playing guitarist
And I thought I was the only one who thinks this pedal is EXTRAORDINARY
a metallic colored xotic rc booster? mine is white
Not sure why anyone would dislike this, but I have personally been disturbed by Scott's hair for many years now.
I don't like at all how Scott is looking into my soul in start of this video.
I believe that's how he gains all of his guitar skills...
Scott Henderson is not a Mason employee in any way shape or form. He loves the pedal. We found out he used it and contacted him. He said he'd love to talk about it.. You should do your homework before posting ideas.... If you did you would find out most of these guys (Scott Henderson, Mike Stern, Michael Landau etc.... find products they love and use them.. They don't care about endorsements as much as their tone.
So he doesn't wor for Nick Mason? Damn. Imagine those two in a band. Henderson is like an Uber-Gilmour.
Does anyone know which Fender amp is he playing thru here?
Fender hot rod deluxe
insane....
Can’t be “the best distortion ever made” it doesn’t cost enough 😎
Haha, message us and we can get you one, nice and expensive, if you'd like. ;-)
Scott is the master....
Who the fuck would dislike this!?!?
one of the four beasts
b. baker
w. krantz
b.l. rodgers
dude needs to add a noise gate pedal on low. just to clean up the background a bit.
Yeah, you can go and get a SD pedal, but dont forget, it takes a Scott Henderson to get THAT sound. Great pedal btw.
That goes without saying, but the SD-9 will definitely put you on the path....
THESE TWO GUYS ARE RELATED? LIKE FATHER AND SON?
SOLERAFLAMENCA - Ha! No, we're not related, although I wish I had "inherited" his ability to play the guitar so damn well!
I am not positive but i believe it's a Deluxe Reverb.
Deluxe Reverb has knobs on the front, this looks like a Hot Rod Deluxe or DeVille,
and probably something like FRS Limited Surf Green Version, might be a Greenback or Creamback loaded.
So why do you call his pedal "the black sheep" of the lineup if it sounds that good? I'd agree with Scott that it is the best distortion ever made!
Because Maxon is known for Overdrives and Analog Delays. NOT distortions.. So this is kind of a sleeper pedal for them. When people hear it they love it but it doesn't get much hype.
The people that hate this just hate so they can have something to say or the playing is so far above their head they can't comprehend what's going on.. .lol
5:36 "Niice" "it sucked" "it's a rap" "yea its a rap"
jaja!! sos recabeza fiera!
The best guitar player Whith Allan Holdsworth.
I can hear Jeff Beck.
Wammy-licious
hahaha
You know what? I think I dislike this!! Think about it: he starts by saying "this is not the real thing" "usually I get a better tone but I have no choice with this amp", and then he plays a note and the sound coming from the speaker almost makes me jizz in my pants! How can you not hate this?! His "not that good" tone is like the best tone Ive ever heard! Damn I hate you Scott!
$144.00 -- $159.00 ...
Correct. That is the price.
dude fender disliked this
He is good, but in his style, I think Jeff Beck has the upper hand.
I'm sorry but that purposely playing out of key thing he does sounds like shit. it's cool when you do it right but not when you run a whole scale rather than passing it
shut the fuck up
+mathhhias42 it still sounds like shit
Troll elsewhere punk ass
Allez! va ranger ta chambre!
