Wow, that's amazing. I never knew how reasonable it was there. The video of you guys driving around was beautiful. I can see why you chose to be there. I make a little over $900 a month, which here in the US is a joke. Our gas prices are $2.99 a gallon, food is outrageous, we pay $75 for electricity, internet appox. $65, the phone is $45, rent runs $1000-1550 for just one bedroom, etc. You can guess life here is getting too tight. Thank you , James. Have a happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe.

Thanks James for a nice recap on SR quality of life. It would be nice if you cover some pointers on senior expat dating scene as well as finding live in partners. Pattaya seems to be too commercial in this regard. Your drive vlogs in and around SR are fantastic. Happy Holidays !

Excellent content.Your time in Cambodia is obvious: you know whereof you speak. Armchair travelers( my situation) get educational and entertainment value, and "boots on the ground" types receive real time money and hassle saving suggestions.Thank you sir.
you mentioned Bupa so I got on chat with them today to see if they could offer me something similar to your plan. Zero chance of getting a policy if resident of Cambodia or Philippines (my two current options for locating). So maybe you were grandfathered into it from years ago, but for newcomers, Bupa is not an option apparently. Just FYI.
Great informative video, James. This video answered most of the questions that I have in my mind regarding visiting Cambodia and staying for a while. I am currently retired and planning to travel to several countries in SEA to decide where I would like to stay long term. Cambodia and especially Siem Reap seems to check all the boxes in my list of likes about a specific place to stay. Keep up your great and helpful videos. Best regards.
how do you setup up your finances and banking? Cambodia still don't seem to have the infrastructure like what Thailand would offer. It would be a hassle having to return to Western country and flying back to Cambodia if there are issues with banking.
banking here much better than thailand... have wu and money gram, bank transfers easy.... and most of the banking is on the ABA APP... in fact better than the uk..
Thank you very much. Very helpful. I want to find a good hearted partner and have a happy simple life. I’m interested in dating. I don’t drink and am a very good person. I’ll be there in Siem Reap early 2024 🙏🏼
Thanks James, could you give us info on opening a retiree bank account (are banks insured to a certain amount?) and best, easiest way to transfer funds from the UK. Thanks! 👍
$1200 / mo. sounds like a decent retirement especially if more frugal with rent ? -- I don't drink or smoke just take blood pressure meds and gave up on women. Too old to be bothered. I like it alone and enjoy the solitude but I do socialize some. -- Looking forward to the cheaper living than the US !
@@pathkris2984 That's what I'm thinking - since I get a good bit more than $1200 so it would allow for some nice savings if I kept it around there 'most' of the time ?
Go to Koh Rong Sanloem if you want the Koh Samui vibe. It’s a lot cheaper too. To get there, fly from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville, which is an hour flight. Then, take a half hour speed boat to the island. I recommend Lazy Beach Cabins.
James, how have the Cambodian people recovered from the all the effects of the Pol Pot regime ?? How did you originally decide on Cambodia instead of Thailand or Vietnam?? Hiw do foreigners handle the high heat and humidity all the time? So people live in air conditioning 24/7?
A rainbow 🌈? Okay... I will never relocate myself, but am curious. "IF" we experience extreme political and/or economic chaos, can the foreign born resident expect to be accepted by indigenous populations?
@@jamesncooper - No that's not clear - Foreigners can't own any land in Cambodia, but can own property off ground level. They can't solely own property at ground level, by law, but can own ground level property, shared 51/49, in favour of a Khmer partner.
Whilst you video is very informative it has some cognitive bias attached. Cambodia uses the US dollar as it currency so the cost of living in Cambodia is dependent on the exchange rate between your income currency and USD. I currently live in Thailand as a Brit and have to exchange sterling into Baht which has gone from 74 to 44 baht to the pound. However, for the last 18 years I still have managed to live in Thailand very comfortably on less than $500 per month. An alternative to health insurance is just to put aside say $50 a month in an account and when any health issues arise pay for them from this. Day to day health issues will be easily accommodated its only if you need to stay in hospital that the costs may become an issue.
Life has a lot of twists and turns. One day you are a millionaire and the next a pauper or vice versa. There’s nothing to be ashamed about being poor. When you have the money, you don’t become arrogant and point out the “poor people”. Those poor people made the leap and moved and are braver than you. They may be living a life far better than you with the job that pays the big money. Having money or being rich doesn’t mean you have a better life.
@@heythave Having money does give you a better life, you can afford to run the Acon all day, you can afford a car for transport over walking, should you get ill, you can afford the best medical care, you can eat the best of foods, you can even employ poor people to do all the things you dont want to do, like cleaning the mansion.

Apparently, I won't starve to death on the 2800 USD a month that I get in retirement. Siem Reap is definitely on my "bucket list".
You can live in most places of the world for that amount, with a few exceptions
On 2800 USD you'll be living in luxury.
From what all I been able to find - you should be just fine on about half of that. -- If you enjoy travel - it would allow for a good bit of it - all around S E Asia Australia New Zealand........
You can live comfortably in Dallas tx $2800 unless you are using drugs or prostitution
That wouldn't be enough in Sydney Australia

No malls in SR???? What about Heritage Walk Mall and Angkor Mall? According to other reports, there are seven malls in Siem Reap.

No giant malls like Iconsiam or Siam Paragon in Bangkok. Not congested like Bangkok.
