In this sweet musical comedy/drama, Jimmy Durante, June Allyson, and conductor José Iturbi share the screen with precocious eight-year-old Margaret O'Brien. Little "Mike" (O'Brien) tries to help her pregnant older sister (Allyson), a cellist in Iturbi's orchestra who is pining away for her soldier husband. Among the musical highlights in the movie is Jimmy Durante giving a stirring rendition of his famed nightclub piece "Umbriago."

I think so too! Shirley Temple was cute and entertaining but this Little Angel's acting abilities were Amazing!!
For a child to be able to cry as she did and able to get as emotional as she did, speak with such expression... I watch her movies and she draws me in so much, I forget she's "acting" I can't RAVE enough about her! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I wonder why she wasn't in more movies, like S.T. soo many movies ? Even that little boy that was with her in our Vines tender grapes seems I've seen him in more movies than her too. Maybe her mom didn't want to overdo it with her, burn her out , I don't know. I keep googling Margaret O'Brien movies and expect that I'm going to see another diamond in the rough in the list that I may have missed upon my searches. I can't get enough of her.
how I ended up looking at this comment after watching this movie again, was to comment she's worn these pointy hats in like 4 of her movies LOL

@@badabing9143 I totally agree. Shirley Temple was already quite stiff and 'acting' too much in Since You Went Away. She was a doll but nothing as expressive and spontaneous as Margaret. But she's not passed... she's alive and kicking. She's 84!
