Why The Internet Archive Matters

  • The internet may span the globe, but San Francisco is the place it calls home. Nestled in a quiet corner of The Richmond District, The Internet Archive is on a mission to catalog our online (and offline) life, and provide everyone in the world "universal access to all knowledge." Here's a small glimpse at what the Archive does to preserve the internet, and what it can tell us about preserving our own personal histories.

Wow, I never knew the Internet Archive was in SF. As someone who grew up in the early 2000s a lot of my nostalgia lies in these intangible things, and it's certainly under-appreciated how many of them I can go back to with a few clicks. Great video!

Which reminds me, we need more Disney Channel bumpers on the Archive...

The Internet Archive is extremely important, a few years back, a fan of my favourite cartoon show made a song and it was widely beloved by all the fans including the crew of the show itself. They reached out to her, licenced the song and made an entire episode based around the song and used it for that episode, the fan became an intern at Disney and is currently an executive assistant at Disney. That original song sung by her is extremely important for the fanbase because it represents the love between the crew and the fanbase. However, the original song that was posted on Tumblr is now gone, and can't be found on the app anymore, and that absolutely devestated me, because that original song holds so much sentimental value. Thankfully, thankfully someone had posted the full song to UA-cam before the page was deleted. Upon becoming aware of what Internet Archive was and what it's mission is, I realising that this video might also get lost, so I saved the video to the Internet Archive, and now the original song is truly saved.
I fully believe in the mission of the IA and have tried to upload pieces of media that I feel are vulnerable to deletion and keep them safe.

Thanks for watching! A couple of notes/corrections/things I didn’t get to in the video…
    - 150 people work FOR the Internet Archive, but not necessarily AT the Internet Archive. The SF office houses maybe a dozen or so employees.
    - Most of the web page archiving is actually done automatically, thanks to a web crawler. But you can also help out by manually adding a page using the Wayback Machine.
    - Everyone loves high scores, the but the number of archived web pages actually *decreased* a couple of years ago, thanks to a change in how they’re counted.
    - Regarding the National Emergency Library, the latest news is that authors are able to opt out of the program, if they so choose.
    - Those statues you see in the main hall are actually sculptures of over 100 current and former employees of the Archive. They seem to want to preserve everything, even human beings!
(NOTE: I had to reupload this one due to a sound issue, so thanks for bearing with me)

With the internet archive, i can see any website from my childhood just as it was back then. This even includes old school sites and such, which would otherwise be lost forever. Its a lot of fun to use, but its also documenting an important part of human history.

Hey Joey--awesome job! I'm the Director of Partnerships at the Internet Archive and spent most of my career reporting/producing for television networks. What is your background? Do you have a plan for where you want to take these videos?

    • @JoeyYee
      @JoeyYee  4 роки тому +13

Thanks Wendy! I've been doing editing and production work in the Bay Area for almost a decade, and most recently a stint that a tech company (which was the whole reason for starting this channel).
As for these videos, my main goal is to have them be a veritable guide for the city, looking at the more off-beat and peculiar things about San Francisco (because what is SF if not weird?). I''m hoping to one day expand their scope to having them be about the ENTIRE city, not just The Richmond, and go more in-depth about the history of it all.

  • @DillonThomasDigital

I haven't watched the full video yet (I'm less than 45 seconds in) but you should do the history of how the internet was birthed in the City. A lot of SF cafes had dial up internet kiosks where people could congregate and discuss via forums or in real time chat. This was like around 1994-1997. JPSNet was one of my first "internet" forums in the City.

Joey, interesting find. Never knew it even existed. A little fact for you... which you may or may not have known. The church building they are housed in was a Christian Scientists church... at least back in 1965-1968 when I attended Sutro Primary School... the old version... as I noticed on a relatively recent visit to S.F. that the old Sutro School had been knocked down and replaced with a new version. Shame. Anyway, I guess in some ways it’s inevitable, since you focus on S.F. , the Richmond District and Clement Street... which were all integral to my life for 30 odd years (and still are as I revisit frequently)... but you keep making direct ‘hits’ on my life’s history with many of your videos. Keep it up. I’m enjoying the nostalgia. 👍🏻😎

I can fully acknowledge that there are those who abuse copying, and tend to publish stuff without giving anything back like crediting the authors. But what makes my blood boil, is that the US government, will not present the whole picture, because there are people who just want to archive and preserve things from disappearing, while at the same time trying their level best to credit the authors.
While it may be valid that copyright law may have its purposes, there are also valid criticisms against the copyright law in general, for being too complex, limiting accesses, slowing down progresses, are straight up outdated, inadequate enforcements, over-protections, and for its wrongful vilification against people who just want to preserve and archive works (both preservationists, and freelance preservationists) from disappearing. And that's what those copyright lawyers need to understand, but most if not all of them, don't even get those points into their heads. It is one of those reasons why democratic countries like the UK and the US, need to have Anti-Copyright Abuse, and also Anti-Intellectual Property Abuse bills in order to level the playing fields.
In short, both laws and rules are not infallible and pure, thus, are susceptible to being corrupted and warped by mortal nature. Same time, laws and rules can be good or bad.

Because these topics get censored heavily. If they didn't have truth to them, they would not be censored so much.. think about it.
