Actors That Directors Refused To Work With Again

- Glitz and glamour are often part and parcel of being an actor in Hollywood, and reaching A-list status can take years to accomplish. But if an A-list actor starts developing bad habits and behavior they can easily find themselves on the outs.
Burning bridges in Hollywood is the last thing an actor wants to do. Actors may be the face of movies but it does take a mini-village to get a movie made and become successful at the box office and among critics.
The last thing you want on the set is a difficult actor, but it happens. Here are actors that directors refused to work with again.

We accidentally implied Jason Schwartzman was in Royal Tenenbaums - shockingly, he wasn't! Sorry about that! Which celeb do you think is the most difficult out there?
Looper?
Chevy Chase,
Also I've heard Dan Akroyd is also difficult...
That was Luke Wilson, right?
@@queen0karaoke Yeah, Chevy Chase definitely deserves a place in this top 5. He was despised and avoided at all costs by his fellow castmates on Saturday Night Live. The stories about him on movie sets seem to confirm reports of his petulance. I was surprised to hear about Hackman. I've always thought that he was a true pro.
Are you sure? This might be another Mandela effect situation
I'm sorry, Polanski basically abuses Faye Dunaway and SHE'S certifiably crazy? Seriously?
Tracy Rowe I agree with you 100%. Who doesn’t let an individual go to the bathroom when they need to? 🤨🤨🤨
She's a diva- she gets paid obscene amounts of money for doing a job anyone can do (including kids/cats and dogs)- and demands Diva worship!
Polanski, on the other hand, is pure Hollywood evil!
@@guppy0112 being a diva and being crazy are two different things. Polanski is a monster, but that has nothing to do with his working in Hollywood.
It was Jack Nicholson who said she was acting crazy. Polanski could be crazy too, he was never the same, after the Manson Family murdered his wife and unborn child.
He would've let the child actress go to the bathroom. As long as he could go with her, of course.
I saw the title and i thought "Oh Edward Norton must be here somewhere"
I think he is one of about four people on this list who seem to appear in every list video about conflict involving an actor.
@@jessecarliner7733 Him and Val Kilmer!
yeah but American HIstory X was a great film tho, wonder how well it would have done under 90 minutes like the director wanted it.. would it have been as successful?
jorge anguiano I agree.. I always have this conflicting question as well. He is notorious for always meddling on movies but damn it his movies are always on par if not always there..
Maybe he does have some results to justity his meddling after all.
@@aaronjoseph6659 I saw an expose on Edward Norton about how difficult he could be when it came to insisting on pretty much editing, doing director's cuts and insisting on getting his way w/ the movies in general. Darned if pretty much everyone didn't agree w/ him and laud him for sticking to his guns though. The results do speak for themselves.
" People said America's sweetheart was difficult to work with" on Hook. My first thought was 'Who the hell is talking shit about Robin Williams' ... then they flashed to Julia Roberts/Tinkerbell....
"Any future Roman Polanski film..." - Seriously, why-why-why does he even get a chance at making one ever again?!?!?!
Shuddddddupppppp.
Because rich white men who make other rich white men money are rarely punished
Because he makes good films
G B Genuine question- why list Meryl and not Scorsese, Woody Allen, Guillermo, Inarritu, Harrison Ford, Tilda Swinton, all of whom signed a petition in his defense? Depp and Goldberg have also publicly (and embarrassingly) defended him. So why name her and not them?
Agree, if anything it makes me think better of Faye Dunaway
The Bill Murray part was heartbreaking and emotionally cruel. Thankfully, they have made amends
Norton have admitted he is difficult to work with. He even played a parody of himself in Birdman.
Are you sure he knew that's what he was doing? I've heard rumors that he didn't understand.
My uncle worked on Moreau. He said that everyone on set hated Kilmer because of his behaviour.
Wes Anderson’s response to the question about Hackman is extremely mature. Especially compared to some other things people did in this video.
@@flounder The Royal Tenenbaum was one of the best movies that Wes Anderson had crafted until The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Marlon Brando NEVER learned his lines in any movie, not even The Godfather.
Although it has been said that was his acting method. He apparently felt he was better when spontaneous. Who really knows?
Wesley Snipes in the third Blade film can be included. He was soo stoned that they expanded Reynolds character with ad lib.
A funny quote about "The Island of Dr. Moreau" that you guys missed: One of the directors (forget which one) said about Val Kilmer, "I will never climb Mt. Everest, and I will never work with Val Kilmer ever again." Pretty much says it all. 😉
What's the surprise? We are talking about a bunch of narcissists, right? The acting profession is chock full of them.
Wilson, the volleyball, in cast away was a spoilt brat appearently.
Ha!
So this is why we never seen Wilson in any other movie.
@@notsureiL saw him on a talk show where he reunited with Tom Hanks. Heartwarming moment.
erlend steine
I found his acting, flat 🤣
@@marksheppard6498 i thought he / it a well rounded (!) and thought provoking character.
Wes Anderson was at least professional at how he spoke about Gene Hackman, and simply didn't work with him again, rather than trash him.
Some of these other directors could learn some professionalism.
Wes anderson is a pro as well as a gentleman from everything I have heard and read
“Actors that directors have refused to work with again”
BRUCE WILLIS HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
Does any director ever work with Edward Norton more than once?
Wes Anderson is right there.
@@manchesterunitedno7 Wes seems like the most patient director ever
"...and Jason Schwartzman..." - and they show a pic of Luke Wilson.
Ive heard so many people saying how difficult Bruce Willis is to work with. Damon Wayans also said he was difficult to work with on the last boy scout
@Albert Menendez Yea it's a great one alright!
its surprising such good actors are so difficult to work with!
@@ashwin.unlead ego attitude
@@superlex611 true that , that ruins everything for a person!
Stallone said he was really lazy on the expendables, and didn't mince words about it at all. Stallone really dislikes him.
I don't think George Clooney deserves to be on this list. I've never heard any of his other costars complain about him being difficult, but multiple videos of David O. Russell acting like a psychopath on set. I am surprised no incidents involving Russell Crowe or Christian Bale are on this list!
Yeah, on the defense of George Clooney. David O' Russell is a notoriously well-known asshole director with a short-tempered fuse.
O Russell is great director only on his own mind. Ironically, 3 Kings was the only one of his movies I like.
Truth
@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom You're kidding right? David O Russell directed The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. I'm not saying he isn't an a-hole, but he isn't a bad director.
It also doesn't surprise me at all that Clooney stood up for some AD. He's that kind of guy. It's very important to him that the people around him are treated well.
@@nikolatesla5553 The Fighter is the only decent one you mentiined and even that is overrated. American Hustle is a straight up piece of crap.
Great video! Tysm!
Wow, very informative! I had wondered why I hadn't seen several of those actors in films lately.
4:10 Actually, by the vesrion given by the other side- George Clooney sounds like a down to earth good guy, who did the right thing (so I guess 'difficult' by Holywood standards).
Why am I not surprised that Edward Norton is in this list?
How many ads can UA-cam and “creators” put in before we realise it’s all a commercial?
What’s that hellish noise going on in the background? Surely it’s not supposed to be ‘music’?
Imagine being annoyed with someone so much that you yank a stray of hair on someone's hair😂😂
That's crossing a boundary and how would he feel if someone did that to him?
Gotta love the misogynist tones of this title. "Faye Dunaway is an actress that Roman Polanski won't work with again", well that's because Roman accosted her physically and verbally. Do better, Looper. Do better.
@D G In you?
Faye is barking at the moon, crazy.
Drop your moral superiority bs. You don't really give a damn.
Who else noticed that when she said Jason Schwartzman, they incorrectly showed a picture of Luke Wilson from "The Royal Tenenbaums"?
Scott Laughlin lol came here to say that!
They said that they didn’t mean to do that
@@HTMN161 2 hours after I pointed it out! Haha! Seriously, though, Looper does great stuff. It was just something I noticed. Glad I have influence on anything while self-isolating at home! At least that's what I'm telling myself.
People blame the actors, and it often is made to sound like they are the problem, but it sounds like some of these directors have massive egos as well.
When did directing stop being yelling "Cut" during scenes, and evolve into running the whole show?
Pulling someone's hair during a shoot (like Polanski, an accused child molesteror, did) would upset anyone, and while Faye Dunaway is difficult, you don't pull someone's hair.
David O. Russell is massively unprofessional, and screams at actors on-set. He has had many run-ins with actors before.
Kevin Smith has a whole series of UA-cam videos, where he talks about bad encounters he has had with people (e.g. Bruce Willis, Prince etc). As the saying goes "It can't always be everyone else's fault".
The fact is, some of these directors are jealous that, deep down, they know it isn't them that people come to see the movie for.
Got to admit, its entertaining seen Hollywood millionaires go at each other this way.
I kinda have to side with Dunaway as far as character motivation. A paycheque can't be anyone's ONLY motivation. When you're an actor in a role, you want to know WHY a character has to or wants to do something or can't do whatever else or your performance feels OFF.
Polanski doesn't sound like he was any day at the beach to work with, either. In not letting Faye go to the bathroom, he was acting more like Tommy Wiseau. He deserved what Faye did to him. I might have done likewise.
Supposedly Billy Bob Thorton came up with the 'sound' that his Character in Slingblade always made...that mumm huh thing...by working with Val Kilmer on Tombstone...that says a lot.
Yes, I refused to work with some of them too
Many actors do not go into a film project as professionals. They come in regarding the endeavor as star building marketing, so often they want some type of input to change the story.
You’ll always get people who just don’t get on with each other, that’s just a fact of life, so when you add overinflated egos into the mix ....BOOM!!!... i feel sorry for the other actors, must be a very stressful working in such an uncomfortable atmosphere.
Seems like Clooney might fall into a somewhat different category here.. I'm not saying there weren't problems on that set (there obviously were), but sounds like, at worst, he was misinterpreting Russell's personality/mannerisms and was trying to DEFEND the less powerful people on set.. Big difference between a personality clash and outright "diva" behavior.
Wow!
dunaway was abused and assaulted and somehow shes the crazy one woooowwww
Frankenheimer: "i don't like Val Kilmer, and I don't want to be associated with him ever again." Finally a hollywooder speaks the actual truth about the people he works with. I get so tired of the DVD/Blu-ray extras interviews where everyone just acts like everyone on the set is just swell. Puhleeze. These people are toxic.
Not everyone on sets of movies fight. Many do actually get along.
Just because you hate actors....
Well, Norton was right, lol. Thank god we didn't listen to Kaye
American History X is a masterpiece and it's totally stood the test of time. Norton apparently second guesses every director and interfers w/ everything about the movies he's in, but he hasn't been in a bad movie. The man has skills, and obviously is a natch w/ great instincts.
Sainte Jeanne d'Arc he needs to just become the director he is supposed to be that acts in his own films. He clearly has the talent and vision where he can do both, it’s a surprise he hasn’t yet
@@mtchmtchll He has. Motherless Brooklyn was an epic film that he directed and adapted to screenplay.
Thing is, Directors aren't obligated to work with any actor more than once, regardless of their good or bad behavior.
Nice to see Kevin Smith displaying such massive amounts of class. (Yes, that's sarcasm.) Two sides to every story. Willis apparently isn't as miserable a human-being as Smith is.
This is crazyyyyy
I find it baffling that actors can be so difficult to work with. Just show up on time, do your job well, collect the bag, and take your ass home. DAMN!!!
I love Faye
Why was Dunaway the difficult one? There was a diva on that set but it wasn't the actor SMH
Hackman made the Royal Tenenbaums
Did you forget that Dustin Hoffman played Captain Hook?
David Broughall I don’t Meryl Streep didn’t like him, he was an absolute asshole to her. In the movie Kramer versus Kramer
George Clooney stood up against a bully director is something very commendable and appreciated 👏 no matter how you want a movie to be made , it doesn't give you any right to yell or harass crew members
Say what you want about Edward Norton but you can’t deny America History X is one bad ass movie and cutting it down any more would make it that much less. In this case I think Edward Norton was correct so 🤷🏽♀️
Uh, do you know about David ORussell's history with actors? You should look into that.
The incident which put Clooney on this list is very wholesome.
George Clooney is an awesome dude.
I say God Bless Chris Columbus, I've heard Chevy Chase is a real POS, idk...but if alot of people say it, there must be some validity....and to get Home Alone is an awesome win....
Kate Winslet had some pretty negative feelings for 'Titanic' and was not pleased with James Cameron's behavior.
Poor Faye Dunaway. She was basically told to shut the f*** up by her director nonetheless, had her hair assaulted and then was called insane from her male costar.
Anyone who is disliked by Roman Polanski is liked by the world who gives a ship with the rapist thanks
Both parties in can argument can be bad, just because the devil was mean to her does not mean she is, by default, not insane . (I am not saying she is, just saying that the argument is flawed).
John Carney himself is a very rude Director I was on an extra on a set of tv show, and he was shouting at the actress Who is a very sweet woman.. He shouted and threaten the production assistants that if they don’t do their job he’ll make sure they’ll never work on another set again.. Unless you’re an A-Lister you mean nothing to him
Last one: sounds like someone told the movie big wigs to make a certain director apologize. But I can't say I disagree with him. There's always something missing in her dramatic performances but her comedy is great.
OMG I can’t believe it
Looper.....All hear-say!
Divas
It's a shame these actors have forgotten where they came from.
So you take the director's side in EVERY circumstance?
I have never seen what anyone saw in Julia Roberts.
The version I heard was that David O. Russell behaves like a bully and he knocked down and extra while demonstrating something without asking permission. Obviously, you do push people about as a director if you are showing someone what you want them to do for the camera. He just knocked the guy over and Clooney stepped in, grabbed him and said hit me.
I've been on sets and seen extras treated like human garbage. Funnily enough on 'Fast and Furious' the assistant director gave a speech saying if anyone treats you badly come to him as people always try to take their shit out on extras. Then on a very posh Oscarbate movie the person in the same possession swore and abused extras.
According to other sources, including Clooney, O. Russell attacked an extra and was kicking him on the ground. This is what set Clooney off. He dared O. Russell to hit him instead since extras can't fight back. O. Russell tried to swing at him, and Clooney knocked him on his ass. If anything O. Russell should be charged with abusing his staff and never be allowed to direct again.
@@mish375 - Yes, that's pretty much what I was saying happened. That O' Russell hit an extra and knocked him down, knowing the extra could not fight back. I didn't hear the kicking him on the ground part. But other than that I was trying to say the same version that you are saying but that differs from what they say in this video. Clooney saw him bullying the lowest guy on the payroll and stepped up. I've heard he's a stand-up guy.
They hire ex-military for extra on movies and so I've done a few things. My picture here is me a soldier in a period movie.
@@AnyoneCanSee I think the abuse story came out later, which is why it wasn't well known. I've heard the same as you, that Clooney is a stand up guy and goes to bat for the extras. He told O. Russell that he wouldn't allow him to kick extras just because they can't fight back. I have a lot of respect for Clooney because of that. O. Russell has a history of abusing his staff and why he's never been held to account for it is beyond me. How he treated Lily Tomlin on I Heart Huckabees was insane. Check out the video on UA-cam if it's still on the site. It's just nuts. Thankfully, she wasn't having any of his BS.
Kevin Smith had already worked with Bruce Willis on Pulp Fiction
And of course, there are the familiar faces, maybe names too (at some point in time) that were too much of a sh*t storm, or were because of their people, that weren't even in this list.
Or any other list regarding mainstream big projects.
Sounds like Polanski not Dunaway was the problem. The director is supposed to give the actor direction, pulling a hair from someone's head is terrible and not letting her go to the bathroom isn't right either. Peeing in the cup was okay but she shouldn't have thrown it on him, even if he did perhaps deserve it just a little. He's a child rapist anyway. Not much integrity with Mr. Polanski.
I'll see to it you never make another movie in this town! Does that include television?
Rob Zombie is not likely to cast the star of CSI Miami in any of his future projects. He was a guest director on one episode and the actor was that impossible to work with, insisted that the shoot was all done around his performance and preferences, wouldn't cooperate at times and do things like open doors or hold props (outside guns and his gun glasses). By the end of the shoot Rob Zombie could be heard answering his questions with "I don't give a s**t."
I don't know who John Carney is. But if sincere. I say bravo
and really...Where are they all NOW!!!
That background theme is more annoying than being on call waiting...
I dont know what yall are saying but i love Faye as an actress and her acting is really good
Clooney was great in 3 kings
Faye Dunaway was the smart one apparently
Larry hagman major Nelson I dream of Jeannie had Peter Pan as mother Mary martin
Wow. That sentence almost qualified as understandable English, and it was almost coherent.
Directing seems fuckign stressful man damn. They would have sued my ass if it was me i can't deal with stress well.
Roman Polanski disliking you? Wear it as a Badge of Honor!
The backstory to The Island of Doctor Moreau is truly fascinating. Every major character besides Val Kilmer and Fairuza Balk were fired or quit, including director Richard Stanley, lead character actor Brando, and the then popular Rob Morrow who broke down in tears on the phone begging the lead producer to be let out of his contract, which he was. I mean there was so much honest to god crossfire going on on the set that no one would believe it if it were made into a movie, which it really should be. Read about it on AOL. It is truly fascinating that a business production could have been run and completed in the way it was.
P.S. - It was one of the last of the old school tough guy Hollywood directors, John Frankenheimer, who took over and finished the film. I remember at the last shoot he said to the whole cast that he'd never work with Kilmer again, throwing in a pejorative to refer to him. He also had him escorted off the set by security.
Wow! Worse than Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes? 😂 That’s rough
I jus noticed dunaway looks similar to sydney Goodman from ign she could be her daughter I was thinking last week how I'll never make it with a young hot dunaway because she's all scraggly and old but along comes sydney...u guys think I have a shot?
There must of been a reason for Julia's behavior norhing is ever totally one way
Do You think you put enough Ads in this? I got 9 minutes in are there were 5 ads. Unsubscribed
Keep in mind, directors do try to sleep with actors and things of this nature. That being said, some actors egos are completely out of control.
What makes you think directors want to sleep with actors
@@sonsofaxe5367 exactly! It goes both ways.
It isn't an ed Norton movie until a director is pissed off.
More than 30 minutes of commercials for a less than 14 minute video... GOODBYE
Ugggh!!!
I'm a huge fan of Faye Dunaway, especially in China Town. Must have been very difficult to play this, and Im full of admiration. All the more, if Polanski behaved like he did.
I loved Kiera Knightley in Begin Again. I also don't think it's that significant that Knightley hasn't worked with the director of Begin Again. It was a small budget Independent film and was made only a few years ago.
I don't know if I ever will see marlon brando the same way I saw him in the godfather and apocalyptic now, but the man just got plain arrogant and successful life overlapped his head .
Dunaway was assaulted (ripping out her hair) by a rapist not allowed in the USA and your take is she's crazy???? WTF am I missing?
In a Hollywood Reporter interview 3 or 4 years ago, Roberts mentioned a big director once told her "When are you going to start acting?" Always wondered who it was. Now I know.
That said, there's usually two sides to these stories. So I'd want to hear from both. We were only getting one side from this video.
Lastly, I'm surprised Mike Myers and Penelope Spheeris isn't on this. It's one of the most famous feuds.
I saw that Hollywood Reporter roundtable. The director who said that to her was Herbert Ross, he directed Julia in Steel Magnolias. It wasn't Steven Spielberg. In the interview, Julia says the cast came to her aid and stood by her.
Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow did an "Actor on Actor" thing a couple of years ago and they talked about their movie, Footloose. The movie was directed by Herbert Ross and they said he was pretty rough.
Funny three kings is one of the only George Clooney films I actually liked.
Murray owes his career to Ramis.
And Murray never saw Ramis before he died. As confirmed by security and police.
They were on good terms before he died
@Michael Colapietro I have heard people say that this feud is why Bill Murray wouldn't do a third "Ghostbusters".
I heard it was because Murray did "Lost In Translation", got Oscar-nomed, and then decided that doing stuff like "Ghostbusters" was beneath him.
She was sick during the filming.........give her a break.
I thought Dunaway killed that role in Chinatown
Julia Roberts had a birthday Party for one of the crew members. But Nicole Kidman didn't want to be bothered with. So they had the party underneath Nicole's trailer window.
Any future Roman Polanski film is, fortunately, unlikely.
Stars “act-out” in different ways when they realize the movie they’re shooting isn’t going the way they thought. This is probably what happened with the small part Bruce Willis had as the principal in “Assassination of a High School President” where Willis added some obviously unscripted (but entertaining) lines - the best being when he chastises a high school girl with: “do I go into the strip bar where you work and pull the d--- out of your mouth?” (the actress and others smile and almost break character).
