No the actual truth is nintendo has yet to even beat their own record. It hasn't even beat the ds sales yet. And unlike with the ds that didn't include 3ds sales into that totals number. They are trying to give the illusions of higher sales numbers by including their switch lite sales into the equation. They are including their budget handheld only device into the same quation as their hybrid console. Why don't Sony include their ps portal sales their ps5 sales if that is the case.
@@Packin-Heat.no it’s not, stop trying to push that narrative. The lite is a Switch without the hybrid option. You can separate the two for certain but it’s not like the difference between a PS5 and PS5 Pro. Same chipset, & game library.

This is what people don’t get. Nintendo doesn’t care about some random arbitrary title like ‘best selling videogame console’. If they did they probably would’ve blown past that number ages ago. The reason they haven’t is because (surprise!) Nintendo wants to sell consoles at full price for as long as they can get away with so they can make a bunch of money.
That is the problem. They are never going to drop the switch to $70. They are greedy. And I'm pretty sure Nintendo does care. That is a record milestone that they cannot reach despite including several variations of their consoles into their numbers meanwhile they are competing against one console. The switch lite should not be including in those sells. The switch is a hybrid console and the switch lite is a handheld only. Why don't ps start including their ps vita into their console sales if that is the case.
@shamisocarpenter7679 you're deluding yourself if you think Sony dropped the price to help you out. They dropped the price out of necessity. Market demand has allowed them to maintain a profitable price on switch. PS2 demand softened so Sony had to drop the price. If Sony could have sold 140 million PS2 at 299 they would have, but they couldn't. Nintendo can. A meaningless milestone means nothing to a company. Profit does.
@@Stopper33to be fair, console price drops were more of a formality for all consoles during the PS2's lifespan. In fact the Gamecube's retail price eventually dropped to $49 and it still could not catch up to even the OG Xbox despite Microsoft ceasing production on it over a year before Nintendo did on the GC. Now before anyone gets angry at me for pointing that out, Microsoft actually lost far more money than Nintendo did that generation which goes to show hardware sales alone aren't necessarily the ultimate measure of a platform's success anyway.
What makes the switch sales numbers more impressive compared to the PS2 is the fact that back in the day there were no smart devices to compete with. Now everyone has a portable console in their pocket. Competition is much more fierce nowadays. Secondly, DVDs were all the rage back then and Sony capitalized huge on that with the ps2. And last but not least, Nintendo sold a boatload, and then some, first party software on the switch. Figures that were unheard of back then. For example the best Selling first party PS2 game was gran Turismo 3 a spec which sold 14,89m units. To put that into perspective: it would place 14th in Nintendo's current best Selling first party list on the switch.
i want to agree, but i do think switch was a massive scam. no backwards compatibility with old systems at all? nintendo who have been king of backwards compatibility, marketing the switch as a system which can be handheld, and then not allowing any ds games on it? it sucks. also, the hardware durability is objectively inferior. i guarantee a lot of those sales are for replacement consoles for previous owners, which would not be as true for the ps2. i'm interested to see how many unique owners there are for the switch vs ps2.
@@alicevioleta3184 The reason why the Switch isn’t remotely backwards compatible with its direct predecessor, lies with the distinct architecture used on the Switch. Wii U previously used a familiar PPC (PowerPC) architecture that was actually a beefed up Wii (which in turn, was a beefed up GameCube) whereas the switch now uses ARM instead. To have built in backwards compatibility would mean raising the price higher just for a backwards compatible Switch (Nintendo intended it to be as dirt cheap as possible) and the overall specs aren’t powerful enough to emulate its direct predecessor either.
Less people were into the hobby back in the day, though. As far as I remember, gaming wasn't "cool" or properly mainstream until probably close to the PS4 era, when mobile gaming took off - or at least the Wii specifically -, and in the early 00's you were still considered a nerd and an outcast for playing video games in many circles. Populations also keep rising and people are increasingly likely to have grown up playing video games and wanting to share it with their children or just keep buying consoles and games for themselves. I'd say it's still a pretty big achievement and comparing it to a more modern console isn't a fair comparison, regardless of what/whom that comparison is being made against. The PS4 doing PS2 numbers (which I think it's close-ish to? Haven't checked in a bit) wouldn't be as impressive now that gaming is one of the biggest industries in the world.
There’s a photo floating around the internet of the supposed commemorative final unit produced which lists 160,636,885 pcs produced. If we assume all of those “shipped” (which is being very generous), then for the “sold” figure to be £160m+ means the PS2 must have had an incredibly low failure rate for so few of that figure to not be service replacement units.

Sadam Hussein single handedly purchased the most PS2’s 💀 In 2000, reports claimed that Saddam Hussein's Iraq purchased over 1,400 PlayStation 2 (PS2) consoles to use their microprocessors in missile guidance systems. The PS2's advanced graphics processing capabilities raised concerns about its potential military use, and the Japanese government placed it on a list of sensitive items that year. The PS2 is the best-selling video game console in history, with over 160 million units sold worldwide. Sony discontinued the PS2 in 2013
Manufacturing stopped in January 2013, but the 155 million sales number is from March 2012. So 5 million units manufactured between those two points. Some of the last PS2 consoles I personally saw brand new at retail stores were shortly after PS4 launch so they took a while to sell. Still a few million units sold per year is pretty damn good for a 13 year old console at that point. And considering how readily available and cheap used PS2 games were by then it makes sense.
When the PS4 came out I had the money in hand on launch day to buy a Vita too as I was convinced they would launch them as a bundle for remote play. In my simple little mind, that alternate universe would have saved the Vita.
It would be wild if Nintendo manufactured enough Switches to pass the ps2 by a few million, announce the Super Switch, then announce a price cut to the original Switch to $100 just to beat the sales record
$100 for the Lite, $150-$200 for the regular and/or OLED. Either way, it should help the standard Switch surpass the PS2 while the new Switch is on the market.
Sony can tout the number all they want, but the PS2 was in production worldwide for 13 years. Switch has almost caught them in almost less than half the time.
Switch won't surpass the DS let alone PS2 so you Nintendo fanboys need to calm down. The fact that PS2 kept selling after PS3 came out is a positive not a negative. Switch wont sell once Switch 2 is announced.
It's kind of crazy how well the PS2 sold. I never had much fondness for the console, and I always preferred the other ones (Dreamcast, Gamecube and XBOX). Personally, I always got a sketchy unattractive feeling from games, many suffered from interlacing, and early on many games tried to mitigate this by using a smeary and dreadful frame-buffer motion blur. It also often had the worst versions of games. Yet, with all the downsides it still sold like hot cakes. My take is that Sony was able to push down pricing with time, making the console an insane value since it came packed with a DVD-player. I think a lot of people was sold on that proposition back in the 2000's. And you could REALLY tell that for Sony it was not only about gaming, but it was also about conquering and owning the media market for video and movies. Which they manage to do.
Indeed, the PS2 sold 160 million units, yet the best-selling game on the PS2, GTA: San Andreas, sold only 17.33 million units. This proves that many people bought the PS2 primarily because it was a cheaper DVD player. In contrast, while the Nintendo Switch has sold fewer units than the PS2, its best-selling game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, has sold 64.27 million units.
@ No it shows that back then rhe gaming market was much different. Blockbuster/gaming rentals were big. The used gaming market was significantly bigger than it is now. People shared games more. Etc

I ended up with so many units from customers who just decided to buy a new one instead, i was able to build a small PS2 fort!
The same goes for the switch. When they first came out they were breaking left and right. That is what happens when you make a screen out of scratch able plastic and didn't patch any software issue before releasing many units.
@1saberzero1 Yes, but the ps2 had, if I remember correctly, 12 or so versions during its generation. Most of the defects affected leater models. The first model is like a tank, but they were cheaper and lower quality with every new revision. I rarely fixed early models, I have one that still works.
@cpu64 I don't remember them having different versions. Just slim models. Maybe the slim models had issues. I didn't have the slim model and mines work just fine until I pulled off the top of the TV and it fell 6 feet onto tile floor. But even then I was able to fix it easily. The door just got stuck open.

It is pretty embarrassing for Sony to just be randomly revising their numbers of a console decades old. Given that Nintendo have never done a genuine price cut on the Switch (a couple of relatively minor Black Friday deals but never a major price cut) I’m going to suggest they don’t care about this, and rightly so, because it’s not important.
PS2 console sales may exceed Switch sales by 15 to 20 million, but a comparison of the best-selling PS2 games against the best-selling Switch games clearly demonstrates that Nintendo is making more money with the Switch overall.
@@minecrafter3448 You're right and the profit difference between first-party and third-party game sales _is_ what I was getting at, but there's a _possibility_ overall Switch game sales will exceed PS2 game sales in the end. Nintendo gives zero fucks. They could drop the switch to 70$ like the ps2 was, and sell 200 million units. They'd rather keep the cash.
@@alicevioleta3184 btw the PS2 also was pretty frail, just so you know.
@@alicevioleta3184lmao same applies to the ps2 by your logic

Switch won't surpass the DS let alone PS2 so you Nintendo fanboys need to calm down. The fact that PS2 kept selling after PS3 came out is a positive not a negative. Switch wont sell once Switch 2 is announced.
@@jefp65 history says otherwise.
I live in Mexico and I remembered everyone loved the PS2 since you can get 10 or 40 pirate disc copies for 5 dollars of the street.
There seems to be an SCPH-90k in their "museum" in Tokyo, showing unit 160,3xxxxx Million.
I dont think anyone other than sony die hards take PS2 sales seriously. The dvd player did the heavy lifting those things were crazy expensive.
You say that, but remember when the PS3 was the cheapest blu ray player?
A sale is a sale whether you like it or not lol.
@@legacyreaper1834not everyone could take advantage of blu ray in 06. But everyone could take advantage of DVD in 2000 lmao
@ No it shows that back then rhe gaming market was much different. Blockbuster/gaming rentals were big. The used gaming market was significantly bigger than it is now. People shared games more. Etc
Nintendo: We're reaching 160 million.
Sony: Ok, guys. Increase this number adding the sales of all Playstations generations we ever made.
😂😂🤣🤣

I call BS. Unless independent sales tracking can back it up, I won't accept an executive's random quote as fact.
Yes because random third party estimations will have more reliable numbers than Sony themselves? lol

I worked at a gamestop during the the ps2 era. Majority of our sales were replacement for units that quit reading disks. I mean, i paid for college cash by fixing game consoles and more than 75% of my repairs were PS2.
@@1saberzero1 i put a link to a page showing all the ps2 versions listed by model numbers and somehow it disappeared.. but just google ps2 versions and the list should pop up near the top of the results. :)
Remember when the Xbox had DVD playback, but could only use it if you bought the Xbox remote?
No they didn't troll Nintendo. I do find it weird that you wait 11 years to update your sales figures and when you do it's an flat figure like 160 Million, but either way Switch has 5 years left to outsell the PS2 if we're comparing time on the market. It will be around 152 Million by March. Do what that information what you will.
Sony is definitely cooking the books with this statement.
PS2 sold more for sure. Because most people used it as a DVD or were buying a second one because the first one broke. Take those numbers away, it sold less.
@@janedoe3043 Just like you can take away all the nintendo switches sold as a result of the p@ndemic and ppl being stuck inside? That's actually what caused the switch sales to spike incase you didn't know. Let me guess, that doesn't count or that's different somehow

@@SeddyAm No, genius, it was a huge price difference between switch and ps5. Most ppl buying during that time were most likely casuals and just went with the cheaper option.
It’s really not fair to compare PS2 to other video game platforms because we know that the PS2 was being purchased at that time not just to play video games but it was the cheapest DVD player you could get. It was being sold for $99. Other DVD players were going for $150 $200. Why would my dad buy a DVD player for $150 when he could get one for $99. That’s what he did. Do you think my dad played any PS2 games? No, he didn’t but he bought a PS2 to play some DVDs on it.
The ps2 actually sold more games than the switch, but they were all third party. So yes Sony was making much less money, but they were more popular
@@minecrafter3448 You're right and the profit difference between first-party and third-party game sales _is_ what I was getting at, but there's a _possibility_ overall Switch game sales will exceed PS2 game sales in the end. A total of 1.527 billion games were sold for the PS2 and Switch game sales hit 1.3 billion in September of 2024. Interestingly, although there were more titles developed for the PS2, the PS4 has actually sold more games at 1.577 billion. Overall Switch game sales could exceed that in the end too, but maybe not.
There are vastly more gamers now than back then. When Nintendo has a single game as good as GTA3, Vice City or San Andreas then you can gloat.
@@scottneil1187 you evidently misunderstood the core meaning of the comment and started console warring
@@blast_processing6577 the problem with the amount of software sold on switch is that it has too many cheap shovelware games. We also gotta remember that the full price for games back in the 2000s was 50$ and now it's 60$~70$. And now, nintendo has the advantage of digital games, in which their profit is much higher, since they don't sell their games to a reseller (walmart, best buy, gamestop...), of course, they still sell physical games, but it's not the majority anymore.
