I hope they continue to translate this comic because it has been great from what I’ve read and its just a great to see all these obscure Mario characters again.
Agreed! I really hope they give the manga a proper serialization so we can read the early volumes in order, but I'd take a Manga Mania 2 😅 Kirby is getting one more collection at least!
I don't think there's 100% restrictions to new characters though, Mario odyssey, and Luigi's mansion 3 got away with it just fine. It's very confusing what nintendo series can or can't get away with new characters.
Yeah it is very confusing :/ it’s just the Mario spin-offs that seem to have these restrictions-Mario Odyssey is main series/developed in house so it’s exempt, but Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a good example of them perhaps loosening this grip on second party devs? New characters haven’t been 100% banned or anything but with Paper Mario especially we’ve been getting very few per game
@@ThaneGaming The thing is, the restriction seems to be specificaly for *Modifications* of mario characters, I.E. second party studios like Intelligent systems or (At the time) Next level games could make original characters, as long as they arent really based on the ario universe. This also doesnt seem to apply to first-party games like odyssey

That means that if we aren’t using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all”. Yeah modifying is the key word for sure, it’s most evident with stylized enemies/NPCs (that were once staples of AlphaDream & Intelligent Systems’ games) becoming generic. As for why brand new characters have been limited in Paper Mario, perhaps it’s because Tanabe wanted to play it safe? Sticker Star and Color Splash opted for using preexisting Mario characters for bosses, while The Origami King went for the most extreme choice of characters that don’t “touch on” the Mario universe with Things (Tape, Rubber Band, etc.). With his wording I don’t see why previous PM bosses like Cortez & Bonechill wouldn’t be allowed, so I just think Super PM’s “out there” design really put him off lol
I was so excited when this released! The characters are so charming and it's clear that Yukio Sawada is extremely passionate about his work. Even with how immature the jokes are, I absolutely love the way this manga is handled. Considering how generalized the Mario games have become in recent years, it's a breath of fresh air. I too really hope they make a complete English translation of the series as well.
I feel like you’re being too hard on Modern Mario (at least post-2016 Modern Mario). They’re clearly trying their darn hardest to break out of the extremely restrictive generic-ness of the 2009-2016 era of Mario and it shows. Super Mario Odyssey and Luigi’s Mansion 3 were EXTREMELY original and experimental with their environments and new characters. The original Luigi’s Mansion (the one with the original Portrait Ghost characters) getting a remake on the 3DS in 2018. The fact that Nintendo allowed Alphadream to remake two of the most beloved Mario and Luigi games to a whole new generation instead of making another Mario and Luigi game as bland and safe as Paper Jam speaks volumes (Bowsers Inside Story remake added three new villains that weren’t present in the original game called the Best Fitness Friends for crying out loud). Mario Tennis Aces had a story mode with the whole Temple of Bask, King Aster, and Lucien thing that was also pretty original. And whether you like it or not, The Origami King was a huge step up from Sticker Star and Color Splash in terms of originality. And of course, there’s the fact that Nintendo allowed Viz Media to localize an international release for this manga which has nods and references to plenty of original set pieces from the early Paper Mario games and to other Mario RPGs also should say something. It is blatantly clear that Nintendo is trying to be experimental with Mario again like they were during the N64/GameCube/Early DS era. They’re not quite there yet but they’re certainly getting there. I honestly and genuinely believe Mario is in a MUCH better and more experimental place in the Switch era than he was in the Wii U/Early 3DS era and, dare I say, the Wii era.
Hey, great comment-I agree with all of what you said so I’m sorry I came off as being too hard on modern Mario. I am appreciative of games like Odyssey & Luigi’s Mansion 3 (as you mentioned) being so very non-generic. I loved The Origami King and I’m one of the few that really liked Color Splash for what it was-but ToK made greater strands to break from the restrictiveness, and the writers even used it to their advantage IMO with Bobby’s story. I’m glad the M&L games were remade with added content and Bowser’s Inside Story included new characters. When Superstar Saga released I was just a bit sad to see the effect of this rule stripping some uniqueness even in a remake, and it turned me off from picking the game up (especially since the Virtual Console version of the original was available). I know that great efforts are being made to shake Mario up moving forward and I’m all for it! You’re right, I should have leaned more into how this book release furthers an upward trend, rather than introduce the negativity as if it’s remained totally unchanged.
I really recommend the Ask Iwata book, it was an excellent & hardwarming read. The Kirby gag manga is hilarious because it's so off-kilter, and every Zelda one I've read has been well done. Haven't tried the Splatoon one yet! Did you know there's also an Animal Crossing manga, and Reggie Fils-Aimé has his own book called "Disrupting the Game"?

This was a good rundown on what Mario Kun comics can offer and it looks funny... Me and some folks on a reddit page have been debating on a very annoying topic... wanna know what that topic is? Here goes.... *Mario Kun Vs Sonic Archie* ... Yeah an old time discussion right? But when ive leaned about this comic and Mario Kun breaking reality and beating up his writer and able to come back from anything, me and others debated on who would win.... Now I'm not really trying to get your opinion on who you think would win, but i do like this video and others who analyze the story and what it means... But seriously though. Who do YOU think would win between Archie Sonic and Mario Kun. Give your honest opinion. Its cool if you choose Sonic or Mario. I like both of em.
I had initially intended to give this manga a chance back in the day because I think having a shared Mario universe in one book series is an excellent idea… but then I saw the treatment of Vivian's character, which put me off of it. There's low-brow gag humor and then there's… that. Which is not okay. Maybe sometimes these restrictions are needed.

I recently bought the mario manga last year, now I need to buy the kirby, Zelda and Splatoon mangas, and also the Ask Iwata book.
I really recommend the Ask Iwata book, it was an excellent & hardwarming read. The Kirby gag manga is hilarious because it's so off-kilter, and every Zelda one I've read has been well done.
