They really knocked it out the park on their BE100 emulation, I actually prefer it to Fractal (when I’m not using the real thing) as all the mods/switches are on the same amp model rather than Fractal having a separate model for each mode. Fractal’s BE sounds equally great, I just hate losing my settings when I want to engage C45 or HBE. I also really like L6’s Brit Plexi Trem - a lot of their Marshalls feel a bit flat as they don’t have the bright cap but that one is very familiar to my real amps. The other Helix models that came to mind are their Uberschall and Orange Rockerverb. The Uberschall is modelled off one of Reinholds personal Rev Greens, which is my favourite Uber revision. I may as well mention one more to make it 5 - the Matchless is really awesome too (one of the better feeling Helix models).
@@LeonTodd there’s a video somewhere on my page comparing to my friends real Rev Green. STL Amphub is very close, Fractal’s seems to be a VERY early version of the uberschall that’s kind of like a different amp…
Even though I'm a loyal and avid Helix user, I have to give the Fractal models you've highlighted the edge in tone. But just an edge-- the ones you have here are very, very tasty. The Placater is my own go-to, along with the Tweed Blues for clean to edge-of-breakup.
i think it's a case of "get where you need to get whichever way works best". The FAS stuff definitely sounds and feels more like an amp to me BUT the goal should always be a satisfying end result rather than some kind of academic exercise in accuracy.
These seem to be very popular these days. Parts of the Helix for less money. I also think the Mesa models are better on the Fractals. But I prefer the interface of the Line 6. I very much like the HX Effects I run with my tube amps. I can see why people like the Stomp though. A lot of bang for the buck.
My faves are the Litigator with the 2 x 12 interstate Cab for Robben/Larry Dumble tones. The Plexi with the 4x12 black back is great too. John Cordy's Hi/low shelf eq trick in between the amp and cab, that lifts it into a more dynamic realm where it can compete with the AxeFx out of the box extra sweet tones. Throw an LA studio comp at the end of the chain to treat it almost like a desk channel. The HX stuff definitely takes a bit more tweaking than the Fractal stuff, but once you get the hang of the couple of tricks you need, it's right up there with the best of them.
nice leon sounds, hx stomp is a good product and sounds good. I ordered a fractal fm3 yesterday and I can't wait to play it as soon as it arrives by inserting your IR lt mix 7 along with a lot of pitch detune and circular delays for an instant return to the 80s = D
@@LeonTodd sure leon, thanks for what you do, i have always followed your videos and i learned so much from you. I hope that the cpu will allow me on fm3 to be able to combine pan delay and circular delay with detune to recreate a lukather style sound.
You should do a series called "amongst the most good amplifiers in the HX Stomp," each video featuring a different amp model. Keep going until you've done each at least twice. I'm pretty sure no one else has done that :)
@@LeonTodd 😹 oh dear, sorry about m8. Would be super interested if you notice it though!? Like legato or pick 32nd notes at say 80bpm with the input z on auto, then 1M. Cordy figured out it wasn’t latency at all but the input z that was effing me up!
Hello Leon !!! Thank you for this great work and great sound!!! Tell me which guitar cab and the configuration of the microphones is involved in this IR?
When you say post processing it cracks me up with your Aussie accent. 😂 We live in a wonderful time for fear. Just epic. I'm not really interested big time in the HX stomp, but I did want to hear some good strat times and you never disappoint this early with my first strong coffee. ♥️🤘♥️ Man, if I owned that yellow Strat I would gig it all the time. Just epic sounding sir. ♥️🤘♥️ Everytime I hear you do a Friedman amp it makes me want one. 😂. GAS is real. 😂♥️🤘♥️ Great review as always sir. Be safe and I hope all is well for you and yours !!! ♥️🤘♥️
@@LeonTodd I've not. I've played some others, but not the Line 6 stuff. Mostly Kemper because my cousin has a studio .. He had like you all these killer amps. Heads and combos and cabs and mics and he sampled them all via the Kemper and uses it mostly unless his client insists on a real amp, etc. I couldn't tell the difference in sound with the Kemper versus the heads. I could tell a little difference with the feel, but not enough to make me say I'd have to haul around Tom's of gear to gig with. ♥️🤘♥️
Before I bought my Axe Fx, the placator was always my go to amp for dirty tones and the throaty wah is still my favorite, there was just something about the sweep that particular wah had that makes me miss my helix just a little bit.
The Ventaux is s great do everything amp. I do the same when bringing the gain up, increasing the HP filter to make it tighter. Also kicking on an OD and fuzz and turning off my delay with one switch.
I would like to see you set this up to gig with and whether you’d use it in snapshot, preset, or effect switching layout. Also there’s a $200 midi switcher that a guy makes for these that has 3 switches and you can have the stomp in effect selecting on the switches and the 3 way switch will change your snapshots. I think it’s called the pilot and he sells them on reverb
I have a question? Im a bit confused about the HX stomp if I use an amp or not. because its an amp sim how do I output the audio source to replicate the most authentic sound of the amp your trying to sim. I was thinking about getting a Vox amp but wasn't sure if it defeated the purpose or not.
If using the amp songs you generally want to use a power amp or full range speaker of some sort. If you're using it for effects only with a real amp then don't use the amp sims
@@LeonTodd so I have it basically at the end of my pedal board and literally just have like a Vox amp sim on it then I run delay and reverb after. so no amp then?
@@LeonTodd so that's it. Just guitar (Reverend) going to the board and then the stomps and that's it. I was building this setup for Worship and didn't know if I needed an amp to finish it or if the stomp is the amp do we just plug it into the house?
how can i find the real amp names for the ones listed in the HX stomp? like what are the names of the amps they are trying to copy? is there a list that shows there real name
Hi Leon. The Ventoux is such a great amp. I think it’s the lead sound designer Ben Adrian’s take on a dumble-esque style if they used an old mid ranged orange amp instead of a Fender style as a starting point 👍 Speaking of Orange, the Mandarin Rocker (Rockerverb) is particularly good in the Helix and the recent US Princess (Fender Princeton) sounds lovely too 😊
Has line 6 improved the noise floor and gate on the Helix? I had to get rid of mine due to obnoxious noise and gates not working. Another thing I would love to see from line 6 is a more engaging UI on the software. I really thought they nailed a good UI with the POD software. The helix UI does not particularly inspire me.
You just can't beat the size of this pedal for any sort of grab and go gig or teaching etc. The Fractal stuff is obviously better but the Helix stuff is great too. The simplicity and form factor of the HX Stomp makes it one of the all time greatest pedals I think.
Best compliment I can pay to the Line 6 boxes is they sound so good they inspire creativity. Great tones Leon. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Couldn't agree more!
Thanks Leon for good review, lovely tones. May the Rock be with you!
Rock on!

HX + amp is a great gigging rig!
@@LeonTodd I really like it. Some guys add on more pedals, but the effects the HX Effects makes are very good. And enough for me.
I didn't even realize there was a Boost Comp (MXR Micro Amp +), what a great thing to stumble upon for me.

I'll have to check but I think so?
Can you recreate the Nightwish sound for me on the HX Stomp?
Awesome tones! What reverb were you using with the Litigator?
I'd enjoy listening to your 2 cents of: Line 6 Fatality, Line 6 Elektrik.
The Plexi's for a Black Shuck kind thing and also the 2204 and 2204 mod. That would be a good video
