I suggest the ActitioN midi controller. With led lights, all the plugs you can ask for, and 8 toggle switches. 130€. That's fair! No screen, but with learn function it will be easy to setup.
Great video! I need to look at Morningstar's options again. Seems like one of the best ways to add MIDI control to the Stomp. I use a DIY arduino based switcher, but it doesn't have scenes, so each switch only sends a single command. 6 switches send preset up and down, FS1 and 2, tap tempo, and tuner. I do use a Source Audio Hot Hand 3. I clipped off the ring, and mounted the transmitter to my violin. Normally I use it to kick up delay feedback by tilting my violin down to the floor, and I have a DVP4 mini to control mix on the effect loop, wah, or volume, depending on the preset.
An excellent video Scott - thank you. Really clear and well put together, no fluff or padding, just straight to the point. New sub here from Ireland - best wishes, a fellow UA-cam audio tutor guy!
In 8:18 you mentioned that you used a Sonicake expression pedal with your HX Stomp with a TRS to 2 TS cables. One for the foot switch and another to the pedal. I bought the pedal and it didn’t work. When sweeping the values they were g going from 0 to 100 to 0 again. So the heel was 0 and toe was also 0. The reason is that the output jack for the sonicake pedal is expecting a TRS cable. What I did was to unscrew both output and input jacks, open the case from the bottom and lift the contact (for the output jack) that would touch the “sleeve” part of the TRS cable. Since we’re plugging a TS cable this change was needed. Maybe the hardware was different when you used it, Scott. Anyway, thank you for this great video. It helped me a lot.
I’m having this same trouble. In the way you explained how you fixed it, what did you mean by “lift the contact”? Did you mean unsoldering one of the three connections? Thanks
@@jeremyrandolph6790 I just did this. There are three contacts going across the connector that touch the cable connector. On the output side you can just bend up the middle contact so that it no longer touches the cable when inserted. Thanks @arthurspa!
I use my toggle expression switch!.. I have in the preset a wah and a tremolo the wah is set to be exp1 the tremolo speed is exp2 then I have one expression pedal and use the toggle expression to switch between using the expression pedal on wah or tremolo!
First off your videos are super helpful!! Thank you so much! The TRS cable at 8:09…if you ran the cable OUT from the expression (wah/vol) and one into a Stomp and the other into an HX Effects, could you control parameters on each Line 6 unit with the single expression pedal?
Your videos have been invaluable in getting the most out of my new Stomp. I feel like it would make sense to have a two button be a preset up/down, since I typically leave mine in stomp mode, but expanding it how you’ve got yourself setup would be awesome too.
Very helpful, as always. Is there a way to use a footswitch as a toggle - i.e., pressing the footswitch will simultaneously turn one effect on and the other off. Pressing the footswitch again would reverse it. Thanks.
Many thanks for many hours of instruction!! I programmed presets & SnapShots. The 3 stomp buttons select Snapshots (for some of the presets.) External FS4 is preset down, FS5 preset up. (No tap/tuner.) I set the input noise gate. QUESTION: Where (if at all) should I connect my TC Electronic Polytune3? If possible, what cable should I use? THANK YOU!
You can always use the built in tuner on the stomp. Get an external pedal and program it to be the tuner: ua-cam.com/video/B2mSNYFPFiI/v-deo.htmlsi=Ay1yGk_mzV3Yl18g
Right, your video is how I learned to set up the external 2 button switch. But I would like to put the Polytune in front of the Stomp. And keep using FS4 & FS5 to go up & down the presets. Would the Polytune go IN to the L Mono Input? With a 1/4" instrument cable? Or 1/4" flat patch cable as one might use to connect analog effects pedals? THANKS AGAIN @@ScottUhlMusic
M-vave and Hotone have come out with cheap 4 button midi footswitch, very recommended for a tight budget. M-vave have sell an extension usb/5 pin for wireless midi also.
I don't get it. Please help me learn. Why buy a midi controller and an expression pedal for an HX Stomp when you could just buy a Helix or LT? It's not because of size because it not saving much space. It's not because of weight because LT is light. It's definitely less reliable than Helix and LT. Why do people do this? 🤷♂
There does become a point where I feel like it would make more sense to buy the LT. I agree. I’m just showing people how they can expand their Stomp. Some people might have already bought the stomp and just need a few more options. Others might have it on their pedalboard with other pedals and just want more control. Others might want to be able to easily fit their gear into a back pack. I personally just use the 2 button foot switch with the stomp. I’m just sharing the info/options and people can decide what works best for them 👍
I got that sonicake expression pedal. Losing my mind for a bit as the calibration was always 0% then halfway was 100% then full was back to 0%. It seems like that sonicake you have to use a TRS cable. That fixed it up and now auto calibrates and no issues getting the full range of 0% at heel and 100% at toe.
Ugh, why did Line 6 need to make the DSP bypass block the entire screen? I want the use the stomp as a simple multi fx so I would be bypassing it all the time. Not seeing which patch I left it on during a gig would be hell.
Hi Scott! New subscriber here, been enjoying all your videos! I have a quick Q: Im using the Ampero switch and I want to use the FS4 to go to a specific preset and when I set it in the command center it works once but when I go to another preset and press FS4 it doesnt work. Then I go to command center again and it is unassigned! You know what could be happening? When I try this with another utility such as snapsht up/down or looper it works so Im completetly lost hahah
Interesting… you will have to program it to load a different preset for every preset in the command center. You also need to save it after you program it as well.
Thank you for making these videos! I would seriously be lost trying to navigate my way through understanding the HX Stomp. I’ll definitely be picking up a Morningstar midi controller!
Scott, Your videos are very informative and helpful. This is what a tutorial should be. I have a Stomp XL and a Pod Go. When I have questions, I look in your video library. Thanks again brother !
Toggle Expression - That can be useful so you could assign volume to exp1 and a wah to exp2 if you had an expression pedal plugged in this would either be a volume pedal or wah according to which you had selected. So many more options as the helix lets you control lots of things with expression pedals it could be gain, mix, delay times or even pitch shift like the digitech whammy. I think you can even set multiple parameters and controls so you could increase reverb mix while reducing the gain on an overdrive. Then still be able to hit that toggle expression switch and then you're back to having a volume pedal
@@marcodelucia Any specific model of expression pedal? That seems to be a question a lot of people ask and there's a few different ones. Line 6 do make their own and theres a brand called mission who make these pedals. I have seen the M Audio ones work too but I would do some research on this if you're thinking of buying one. You would have to adjust the pedal settings to activate or deavtivate it through presets/snapshots. It's been a while since I used an external pedal or edited my helix so a bit rusty
I don't want to affect the tone. Do you suggest checking for the true bypass feature for these pedals? I don't know if external switch pedals/ exp. pedals and midi controllers can affect the tone. By the way, HX stomp is truebypass.
Man you totally convinced me to go full midi! Im hoping Midi through works too. I use a Widi adapter to change patches/programs off of Ableton live. Makes running my show soooo much easier.
I use an AMT EX50 as expression pedal for my HX Stomp, which is super cool since it has 2 outputs: TRS and TS! When I use the HX Stomp alone (for small travel setups) I use the EX50 on the TS out to the ring input, and on the tip I have an aux footswitch for tap tempo/tuner. The HX is used in Stomp mode, and on FS3 thanks the Command Center I programmed it to trigger Next Snapshot when Holding the FS. So I have all the control I need without external midi control. In my normal board instead I use HX with a mini dual aux footswitch to scroll snapshots and tuner/tap. In this board I'm using it together with a Strymon Timeline, which has a expression pedal connected to it. Here there's a Midi cable from Timeline to HX. When I move the exp pedal connected to the Timeline, its movement is tracked via midi CC, so I can use the same exp pedal also to control parameters on the HX via midi. HX is amazing!
Thanks for the helpful video! I have the exact same expression pedal but I having an issue where heel to tip it goes from 0 - 100 - 0... I tried changing many settings but still can't get it to work correctly. Any advice on how I can get it to work?
An expression pedal looks like a good addition to my Stomp XL. Definitely worth experimenting with. The Morningstar midi looks really useful but I'm not sure I want to use that much real estate on my board. Thanks for yet another great video!
If you have used a processor , you have noticed when you change the preset by banks up and down it Blinks ...but on the HX stomp .. if you select the preset Up down option .. it directly take you to the preset ...any help how can i get the blink option so that i can select the perfect patch to choose??
Another great video Scott. I have an m-audio expression pedal, which I modifed to include a toe switch. The toe switch acts as FS4 and the exp pedal is Exp1. This allows me to treat the expression like a real wah wah - push down to enable, push down to disable.
Thanks again Scott....My weekend with the HX has paid dividends....I watched a video where the dude said....you can add two more buttons, OK, and then you can have FIVE snapshots with an HX.....Since I control my HX with Midi, I was thinking I could just plug in a TRS adaptor and trick the HX into thinking there is a two switch pedal hooked up. But after spending some time and watching this video I don't think you can assign additional snapshots to FS4 and FS5.....
Hi, is there something like a dual switcher on the market (with two foot switches) that would switch between different pedals (switch 1) and scroll trough presets with the other switch? This way you would only need 2 switches to change presets on (let’s say 3) DIFFERENT pedals that have a preset feature and a TRS connection.
Hi Scott. when I went to order the AMPERO - 2 BUTTON FOOTSWITCH it listed it as a "Momentary FS". when using the stomp does it change it to "latched" when set to Latched?
Hi I know this is an older video, but I hope you see this question. I have a Cymatic UTrack (and an LP16). Both can be controlled via footswitch to start / stop. Do you think there would be a way that I could use the MC8 to control both the HX Stomp AND the Utrack so that I can start songs from the Utrack Playlist? I *could* just have a separate footswitch for the Utrack, but it would be nice to have less stuff on the floor if I could condense that function into the MC8 and still use the other 6 switches on the HX Stomp. Thanks in advance!
Yeah you definitely can do that. Use different midi channels for each device you want to control and get some sort of midi splitter. I like this one personally: ua-cam.com/video/iWPTYBq0VdA/v-deo.htmlsi=I3W_U2BEsm2kXHfa
Since using the stomp standalone at home but with an amp with my band, is made fs4 my "panic button". It switches the loop for the preamp off and activates a model. Just in case the amp goes down or whatever. Coming from digital I am not against the idea using the stomp just like that in live scenarios, but there may be situations where the pa might not be as powerful in super small clubs where you have to have stage volume or having a big stage and being able to have some stage volume just for feel.

Thanks for the porlarity switch thing, I almost sell my Nux dual footswitch wich isn´t working properly
Can anyone help me. I have the stomp XL , I thought I had cracked it and worked out how I needed to set it up for my needs but it's not working. Basically I have a dostortion pedal that I love and I thought that hooking that up to the stomp XL effects loop would allow me to use it within my presents/snapshots etc. Had everything programmed in , took it tomrehearsal and plugged it into my amp (I pretty much use it as a stomp box) and the distortion pedal in the FX loop sounded fucking awful/broken. Is there something I'm missing, or a way around this?? Thanks
When connecting the stereo to two mono and one to the vexpress and the other to a switch I get a strange appearence. The pedal goes from 100% when in down position, and when in middle its 0% and when fully upp it goes to 100% again so when pressing the whole way it goes 100 ----- 0 -------100. But when connecting a stereo cable in both the vexpress and hx stomp it goes from 0-100. Any idea why this happens?
5:52 isn't TogglEXP helpful if you want to use one expression pedal to control two different things on one preset? say you have a preset that you leave the expression pedal on volume (maybe EXP 1) most of the time, but you also have a wah set up as EXP 2 for example. no?
Nice to have an affiliate link to a TRS single switch. BTW from the video I was not sure you could do the TRS 1-switch and 1-exp approach but as suspected that is an approach too. Might go that route for simplicity and fitting it all on my nano. 😂
I haven’t used the GT 1000c so I don’t know tbh. But yes, you can use all 3 at once. But with expression you only get two options, so: 2 buttons, 2 exp pedals, or 1 button+1 expression pedal 👍
The Ampero switch is less than 20 euros in Amazon, is the best and cheapest add-on, the MC8 is awesome but really hard to get as they're sold out everywhere and local retailers add a very high premium
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, I want one but it's impossible to get here in Spain and their only official distributor charges a premium of 200 euros for it!, I mentioned this to Morningstar but they didn't cared
I'm sure someone's said this by now, but the footswitch to switch between EXP1 and EXP2 is good if you use just a one-button footswitch (tip for example) and an expression pedal (ring)... then you can use that button to tell the Stomp which exp function to target. In much the same way that that Mission L6 expression pedal works.
I'm thinking about getting one of the Disaster Area micro midi controllers. Before I get one, I was wondering is it possible to add a 4th snapshot to the midi controller? I would really love to have at least 1 more
I just ordered an HX stomp and it’ll be here Thursday! I’ve watched your videos multiple times and they’re are the best when discussing the HX Stomp, Helix and practicable music know-how, etc.. I sincerely hope to be considered for the external foot switch and cable. Would be a great addition to my new HX Stomp!
Hello Zacarias, you actually won the pedal, congrats! You can see the drawing on my UA-cam/Instagram/Facebook stories. Please reach out to me either on my website or my social media pages so I can get that sent to you. Please do not respond to anyone who is asking you for money, I will never ask for money for these giveaways. Congrats, and thanks again!
I have a question. I know that the HX Stomp can handle 8 blocks in a single pre set. If I wanted to use midi, could I set like 11 different effects pedals using this technique (3 effects on the HX Stomp & 8 with a Morning Star)? Or, because of the 8 blocks, am I limited to only using 8 effects at once? I'm new to all of this.
@ScottUhlMusic Could the same thing be more or less done though if I had 8 effects set in midi and then 3 snapshots? For example: reverb, delay, looper, chorus, phaser, octaver, & vibrato saved on an 8 switch midi pedal, and snapshots of overdrive, fuzz, and heavy distortion saved on the HX Stomp buttons?
@ScottUhlMusic Right now the plan is to use my pedal compressor & tuner, buy a Morley volume/wah, and then use the HX Stomp XL basically like a giant live effects unit instead of buying any more pedals. However, if I hard limited to using 8 effects (either as snapshots or in Stomp mode) I might pickup separate chorus, looper, and a delay/reverb to free up a few buttons. I WOULD like to use the HX Stomp XL for all that though, if I can.
Fantastic vid. Good work! I have split the TRS to a footswitch and exp pedal. All my delays are set to mix on the exp pedal which frees up a switch. 0 mix is same as pedal off. Also means i can adjust the amount of delay on the fly
I’m a little confused on that one as well. It means the DSP is bypassed and basically just a pass through. I’m not sure when it’s valuable to use that, but it’s an option
THANKS FOR SHAREING THIS GREAT TIPS.. NOW I CAN EASILY UPGRADE MY STOMP.. CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ON A SMALL PEDALBOARD WHICH CAN BE FITTED WITH HX STOMP ALONG WITH TWO FOOT SWITCH AND A EXPRESSION PEDAL..!
Thanks! And I just carried it portably in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/w40W3gGUvgE/v-deo.html I still use that box to this day since the hx stomp takes 30sec to plug in 👍
Hi - I might be missing something but how did you manage to assign the patch output volume (i.e. boost) to FS4, and then Snapshots to FS1-3? I have an LT but am thinking of downsizing. I'm guessing you can have mixed Snapshots and Parameters assigned to FS on the Stomp; and then assign the output block volume to FS4 in HX Edit?
I use snapshot mode to get my 3 snapshots, and then you can assign an external footswitch to whatever you want it to control. I set it to FS4, which was a boost on the output gain
Hey Scott, your videos have been super helpful! I'm using my Loopy Pro as a digital pedalboard for my HX Stomp XL for saxophone playing. I'm trying to assign a button to send the HX Stomp FS7 and FS8 but it won't recognize it or it will turn on the block but not do anything again. Have a had any issues with this? (cc55 and cc56 at 127 on loopy for FS7 and FS8)
If I’m understanding you correctly, I would try sending midi to the certain commands more than FS7 and 8. So if you want fs7 to turn on your chorus pedal, assign that via midi instead of by a footswitch command.
Hx stomp only allows 2 total expression inputs, so you can use 1 button and 1 expression pedal in that situation. You’ll want a TRS 1/4” to 2 TS 1/4” splitter to connect to the stomp 👍
I haven’t used one so I’m not sure about how it works, but with the stomp you only get 2 extra expression inputs and they are either pedals or footswitches. So 5 total on the stomp unless you use midi
You know I just got my XL, I immediately want to tweak all the presets for BASS. You get how when you turn on a MultiFX and it's 90% guitar centered. I use parralel dry chains etc. to add any effects along / inside, but it would be cool to have an HX that was ALL bass.. every patch. Is that dumb?
Hello! Thank you for your videos, they are really helpful, I bought ammoon guitar systems and thay work great. But if we talking about Helix Stomp - did you tried to use M-Wave Chocolate BT midi controller? I use it for a year right now and it is perfect to me, even in comparsion with stuff that costs 10 times more. I use it wiressly and wired in different situations, you must try it, it cheap as hell. Dont forget buy a midi-bluetooth transmitter, but remember that only cons of this thing is low distance (there is some fixes, but it is as it is right out of the box).
@@ScottUhlMusic it costs about 30$ on aliexpress (with additional 15$ for M-Wave midi to bluetooth transmitter), and its capabilities are insane. It can send anything you want in case of midi scenarios (single PP or CC commands, CC on-off pairs for Helix, even chains of midi commands), you can plug expression pedal into this and get wireless expression or you can turn it into wired one - but you dont want to do this because it has built-in battery! And it also can be used as iPad control or as bluetooth keyboard for PC or Mac (and you can set any key to a footswitch). And 15$ midi-bluetooth transmitter can work as MIDI-USB-Host, so you can use it with old stuff like Zoom MS pedals that dont have MIDI IN, but have midi over USB. Sounds incredible, but it can all of this and it do its job perfectly! Only cons for me is low wireless distance (about 3-4 feets) because of antenna lacking (some people attached external one, but you need soldering skills) and no indication leds on footswitches.
Ok-I can’t seem to find a min expression pedal that has a toe switch. I want to use it as a volume and then step on it to activate/deactivate a wha. Basically, I want to use it like the one built into the Helix allows . Are you aware of any “mini” expression pedals that do this? The closest I can find d is the full sized mission engineering be which is 10” in length. Thx
I think the Expression switch would be if you have one Expression pedal but via Midi assigns - you can alternate between the two - if you don't want to have two expression pedals. Which I've guessed from watching your video and now I think I might have found a way to modify my settings - so thank you 😀
I had one a long time ago. It was a PAIN to setup, but there was some software for $30 which made it super easy. Can’t remember what it was called though
@@ScottUhlMusic I tried so hard,. Somehow i did it but not fornthe exp pedals. With "learn" it does nothing, and all without the software (have seen something on UA-cam but in the end is all good and confusing at the same time). 😔
Thanks for your quick response! So if i wanted to still have the footswitch “4/5” you would suggest to do that via midi instead? I asked Line 6 the same question I asked you and they were very helpful and sent me a link to one of your vids 🤘
Thanks for this awesome video Scott, I just subscribed! I am such a noob when it comes to the massive world of Multi-FX, MIDI & switcher possibilities, but I have seen the light! I just bought an HX Stomp and a Boss-ES8 switcher. Have you or anyone here ever used this combination? I imagine there are similar capabilities with this powerful duo, but sincerely appreciate anyone's thoughts here. Thanks again!
Hey Scott! Thanks for the great video! I just bought an HX Stomp and your videos have been really helpful. I use the 3 snapshots mode, so i really miss a tap/tuner and a boost for when I play soft/fingerstyle (I play acoustic guitar), so this video really helped med there. Thanks! Thats also why i hope to be in your giveaway for a chance of winning the external footswitch. Have a great day 😁
I have a midi footswitch controller with 10buttons. Do you know if I can program a couple of these to: 1) Switch presets (scroll up-down my presets). 2) Change from Snapshot view, to General View. Is all this possible? Thx!
Here’s my video on controlling the hx stomp with midi: ua-cam.com/video/iKFBNyAg19Q/v-deo.htmlsi=2qA5Li6sJLvuNGIr if you aren’t able to get it to work, I can be booked for consulting calls on my website (link in description)
@@ScottUhlMusic Thank you for your answer. So the exp pedal works absolutely the same as with a stereo TRS, while you get to have an extra FS of the ampero switch. Cheers.
I hope I get picked this time!! lol. I was hoping to use the amp modeling in the Stomp for bass but didn't end up loving the tones I was getting. It's likely me. Give me infinite possibilities and I'll totally ruin any decent tone lol. I've been revisiting it for the effects in hopes of shrinking my pedal board to my Noble DI, compressor and the stomp, maybe my Darkglass distortion if I don't dig what the stomp's got. A couple extra buttons would be super handy in that.
I have a mesa boogie mkvii, i switch channels with midi on my Helix floor unit, if i hook up to hx stomp the same way, can i still use one of those disaster area midi switches as well?
@@ScottUhlMusic thanx for the super fast reply!!! So the amps midi goes into midi in on stomp and disaster area switch to midi out to get them both going? Am I understanding correctly
Hi Scott, im trying to set up a sonicake expression and a single switch using TRS cable. The switch works fine, but the expression pedal is doing the 0-100 and then at half way its decreasing back to zero again!
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks Scott....some posts say about inverting the tip/sleeve and setting to EXP2, but had no joy with that, so will keep experimenting!
Wow thanks Scott for the video and giveaway! The little two button switch is certainly useful, as I can add it to a cheaper ampero control midi switch. I think less functions compared to any Morningstar. Maybe once you get your hands on it you could do a comparison video?
Good stuff amigo! Currently a Helix Floor user and yet to get HX Stomp but cool thing is this helped me better understand the functionality of my Helix. Much obliged sensei!🙏
Im almost positive those definitely work with midi controllers! I used it with Jam Up in this old video of mine: ua-cam.com/video/Lu9RG1CKEfQ/v-deo.html

I would be interested in seeing one of your videos of you and your band playing using one of these fly rigs. Anyway, thank you for all that you do you don’t know how much you’ve helped me with my helix and my HX stock in all of my gear.
Thanks! Glad to help! I’m literally at a fly rig right now, and we are setting up on a stage ON a pool. Lol. Had no idea. Waiting for the rest of the stage to be setup while I check UA-cam comments. Definitely going to get footage of this for some future video stuff
Excellent video. I'm an old pedal board guy that made the switch to using just the Stomp. You're videos ae my go to resource . I could use that switch!
We’re you able to figure this out by chance? I’m having the same trouble. I have the same expression pedal as in the video and wanted to run it the same way with one external footswitch. The only way I have found to stop the expression from going back down to zero is to swap the cable connections and plug the trs in the pedal and tip in the Hx stomp which obviously will not allow me to use the external footswitch
@@jeremyrandolph6790 idk bro I would try messing with the internal foot/heel polarity switch and global settings…For me I only needed an external exp pedal for my volume so I just flipped the internal switch on my Dunlop DVP5 (8) and inverted the exp settings.

I use the app Quantiloop for my solo cover live looping which I do a review on here: ua-cam.com/video/QmActvDJx7M/v-deo.html My original music is a whole crazy setup in ableton with tracks, automated live looping, midi, lights, video, and more. Your video was Extremely helpful in showing what the control capability of the HX stomp was - it was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I suggest the ActitioN midi controller. With led lights, all the plugs you can ask for, and 8 toggle switches. 130€. That's fair! No screen, but with learn function it will be easy to setup.
I just got my HX Stomp yesterday and I'm watching a bunch of your videos before I touch anything on it. Thanks for posting this stuff.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching the videos 🤘
The Morningstar is amazing! I love it
An excellent video Scott - thank you. Really clear and well put together, no fluff or padding, just straight to the point. New sub here from Ireland - best wishes, a fellow UA-cam audio tutor guy!
Thank you! 🤘
Thanks for the info and leaving the comment 🤘 I appreciate it!

Nice! That makes sense, thanks for letting me know 👍
First off your videos are super helpful!! Thank you so much! The TRS cable at 8:09…if you ran the cable OUT from the expression (wah/vol) and one into a Stomp and the other into an HX Effects, could you control parameters on each Line 6 unit with the single expression pedal?
Thanks! And that’s an interesting question…. I haven’t tried that so I’m not sure
Your videos have been invaluable in getting the most out of my new Stomp. I feel like it would make sense to have a two button be a preset up/down, since I typically leave mine in stomp mode, but expanding it how you’ve got yourself setup would be awesome too.
Glad it’s helped you out 🤘
I bought a 2 in 1 expression knob from sea foam pedal. It is an expression knob with a switch built in.
Oh sweet!
Very helpful, as always. Is there a way to use a footswitch as a toggle - i.e., pressing the footswitch will simultaneously turn one effect on and the other off. Pressing the footswitch again would reverse it. Thanks.
Yup! You can assign multiple footswitch bypass assigns to any of the footswitches 👍
Oh nice! I’ll have to look into those. I LOVE my Morningstar, but it is pricy. Thanks for sharing, I’ll look into those
I’m guessing this would work in the same way for an LT? 17:03 Sounds crazy but I feel I need more than 8 easy to access pedal bypass switches.
Basically all of this applies to all Helix units 👍
I’m just sharing the info/options and people can decide what works best for them 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic Sorry, I don't mean to criticise a great video. I'm just confused by some of the comments.
I didn’t take it as an insult at all. Just explaining how people might want to use this info
I have a quick Q:
Im using the Ampero switch and I want to use the FS4 to go to a specific preset and when I set it in the command center it works once but when I go to another preset and press FS4 it doesnt work.
Then I go to command center again and it is unassigned! You know what could be happening? When I try this with another utility such as snapsht up/down or looper it works so Im completetly lost hahah
Interesting… you will have to program it to load a different preset for every preset in the command center. You also need to save it after you program it as well.
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks man! Ill try thar :))
Thank you for making these videos! I would seriously be lost trying to navigate my way through understanding the HX Stomp. I’ll definitely be picking up a Morningstar midi controller!
They just announced the MC6 PRO which looks 🤯🤯
Scott, Your videos are very informative and helpful. This is what a tutorial should be. I have a Stomp XL and a Pod Go.
When I have questions, I look in your video library. Thanks again brother !
Thanks George! 🤘🤘
Then still be able to hit that toggle expression switch and then you're back to having a volume pedal
this doesn't work properly for me and it suucks cuz there's no tutorials...
Any specific model?
@@marcodelucia Any specific model of expression pedal? That seems to be a question a lot of people ask and there's a few different ones. Line 6 do make their own and theres a brand called mission who make these pedals. I have seen the M Audio ones work too but I would do some research on this if you're thinking of buying one. You would have to adjust the pedal settings to activate or deavtivate it through presets/snapshots. It's been a while since I used an external pedal or edited my helix so a bit rusty
Is it possible to assign these footswitches to neural dsp quad cortex and make them work like a momentary switch for e.g like the digitech ricochet?
I don’t have a quad cortex so I don’t know. Someday hopefully!
I don't want to affect the tone. Do you suggest checking for the true bypass feature for these pedals? I don't know if external switch pedals/ exp. pedals and midi controllers can affect the tone. By the way, HX stomp is truebypass.
MIDI and or external footswitches or expression pedals have no effect on tone
Man you totally convinced me to go full midi! Im hoping Midi through works too. I use a Widi adapter to change patches/programs off of Ableton live. Makes running my show soooo much easier.
Midi is a headache, but always worth it in the end!
I know that can happen when it’s not calibrated properly or something in global settings has changed
An expression pedal looks like a good addition to my Stomp XL. Definitely worth experimenting with.
The Morningstar midi looks really useful but I'm not sure I want to use that much real estate on my board.
Thanks for yet another great video!
An expression pedal does help a lot for sure!
If you have used a processor , you have noticed when you change the preset by banks up and down it Blinks ...but on the HX stomp .. if you select the preset Up down option .. it directly take you to the preset ...any help how can i get the blink option so that i can select the perfect patch to choose??
I believe you would do this in command center if I understand the question correctly
Another great video Scott. I have an m-audio expression pedal, which I modifed to include a toe switch. The toe switch acts as FS4 and the exp pedal is Exp1. This allows me to treat the expression like a real wah wah - push down to enable, push down to disable.
Oh cool! That’s awesome 🤘
Correct, on the stomp you only get 3 snapshots per preset
Hi, is there something like a dual switcher on the market (with two foot switches) that would switch between different pedals (switch 1) and scroll trough presets with the other switch?
This way you would only need 2 switches to change presets on (let’s say 3) DIFFERENT pedals that have a preset feature and a TRS connection.
If I understand correctly, that TT2 pedal might work for what you need
Hi Scott. when I went to order the AMPERO - 2 BUTTON FOOTSWITCH it listed it as a "Momentary FS". when using the stomp does it change it to "latched" when set to Latched?
I believe it just matters how you program it in the helix itself
Thanks
I honestly don’t know. That could be many things. Hope you figure it out. I would do an elimination process
I know I had that problem before, and for the life of me I cannot remember how I fixed it
5:52 isn't TogglEXP helpful if you want to use one expression pedal to control two different things on one preset? say you have a preset that you leave the expression pedal on volume (maybe EXP 1) most of the time, but you also have a wah set up as EXP 2 for example. no?
That’s definitely possible! I haven’t used it much, but that makes sense 👍
Nice to have an affiliate link to a TRS single switch. BTW from the video I was not sure you could do the TRS 1-switch and 1-exp approach but as suspected that is an approach too. Might go that route for simplicity and fitting it all on my nano. 😂
Could you basically do the same thing with the GT-1000 CORE? Also, can you use all three at once? Two button switch, expression pedal, and midi?
I haven’t used the GT 1000c so I don’t know tbh. But yes, you can use all 3 at once. But with expression you only get two options, so: 2 buttons, 2 exp pedals, or 1 button+1 expression pedal 👍
The Ampero switch is less than 20 euros in Amazon, is the best and cheapest add-on, the MC8 is awesome but really hard to get as they're sold out everywhere and local retailers add a very high premium
It’s definitely expensive for sure. But worth it if you do a lot of midi like I do
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, I want one but it's impossible to get here in Spain and their only official distributor charges a premium of 200 euros for it!, I mentioned this to Morningstar but they didn't cared
I would really love to have at least 1 more
You only get 3 snapshots with the hx stomp. I hope in a firmware update they allow 5 with a footswitch, but you currently only get 3
I just ordered an HX stomp and it’ll be here Thursday! I’ve watched your videos multiple times and they’re are the best when discussing the HX Stomp, Helix and practicable music know-how, etc.. I sincerely hope to be considered for the external foot switch and cable. Would be a great addition to my new HX Stomp!
Thanks! Glad the videos have helped. This comment enters you into the contest. Best of luck!

Just 8 blocks at once 👍
@ScottUhlMusic
Could the same thing be more or less done though if I had 8 effects set in midi and then 3 snapshots?
For example: reverb, delay, looper, chorus, phaser, octaver, & vibrato saved on an 8 switch midi pedal, and snapshots of overdrive, fuzz, and heavy distortion saved on the HX Stomp buttons?
@ScottUhlMusic
Right now the plan is to use my pedal compressor & tuner, buy a Morley volume/wah, and then use the HX Stomp XL basically like a giant live effects unit instead of buying any more pedals.
What does it mean when it says DSP BY-PASS press any key when I push my foot switch 4
Thanks! And I just carried it portably in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/w40W3gGUvgE/v-deo.html
I still use that box to this day since the hx stomp takes 30sec to plug in 👍
Hi, do you have any tip on fixing the 0 to 100 to 0 problem with the espression pedal?
If I remember correctly it was a cable issue? It’s been a while so I really don’t remember, but it might be TRS vs TS cable
@@ScottUhlMusic excellent thank you!
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for the reply... this video actually fixed the issue:
ua-cam.com/video/UiB2pInxkWM/v-deo.html
Keep doing what you're doing! :)
Can i use ampero switch and vexpress together? How can i connect them? Tks
Hx stomp only allows 2 total expression inputs, so you can use 1 button and 1 expression pedal in that situation. You’ll want a TRS 1/4” to 2 TS 1/4” splitter to connect to the stomp 👍
Could a strymon multiswitch add a 6th footswitch/ would it work with the stomp?
I haven’t used one so I’m not sure about how it works, but with the stomp you only get 2 extra expression inputs and they are either pedals or footswitches. So 5 total on the stomp unless you use midi
You know I just got my XL, I immediately want to tweak all the presets for BASS. You get how when you turn on a MultiFX and it's 90% guitar centered. I use parralel dry chains etc. to add any effects along / inside, but it would be cool to have an HX that was ALL bass.. every patch. Is that dumb?
I have seen multiple bass players use the hx stomp exclusively for bass. I had to fill in for a band last minute on bass and I used only my stomp 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks, already trying it in different places in the chain, glad I got it going finally, your instruction is helping a lot!
Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. Thanks!
What is the TRS extension cable you mentioned?… where i can buy it?
Any TRS cable will work
Is it possible to have the midi controller and still have a volume pedal incase i need to do swells and control volume
Yup 👍 midi pedal into midi and then expression pedal into expression
Ok-I can’t seem to find a min expression pedal that has a toe switch. I want to use it as a volume and then step on it to activate/deactivate a wha. Basically, I want to use it like the one built into the Helix allows . Are you aware of any “mini” expression pedals that do this? The closest I can find d is the full sized mission engineering be which is 10” in length. Thx
I’m not aware of it, but I also don’t really use my expression pedal input on my stomp though
Thx man
I think the Expression switch would be if you have one Expression pedal but via Midi assigns - you can alternate between the two - if you don't want to have two expression pedals. Which I've guessed from watching your video and now I think I might have found a way to modify my settings - so thank you 😀
Can you do a video on how to set up th FCB1010 Midi controller? Is a very powerfull midi controller
Hi brother which power supply do you use with the HX stomp, thanks!
I use the ripcord or the new Step Up: ua-cam.com/video/ROadxSiSpBQ/v-deo.htmlsi=Um-L1W_-AX90SRn6
Thanks for all of your help figuring out the Stomp!
Maybe i missed it… what is the simplest way to use a volume/expression pedal via midi in?
Thanks! And for an expression pedal I find it much easier to use with the expression input, not midi. Both are possible, but expression is easier imo
Nice! I haven’t used that but sounds cool 🤘
Have a great day 😁
Thanks! And yeah 3 snapshots plus a tuner is a huge plus and that’s how I use it 🤘
I have a midi footswitch controller with 10buttons. Do you know if I can program a couple of these to: 1) Switch presets (scroll up-down my presets). 2) Change from Snapshot view, to General View. Is all this possible? Thx!
Yup, absolutely! Those are all possible 👍
@ScottUhlMusic can you explain how do you do that? I've been trying but for some reason I can't
Can you add an expression pedal and an ampero switch at the same time? I tried with a TRS cable splitting into two TS cables but did not work.
You can, but you’ll only get 1 button. You get 2 expression buttons, 2 exp pedals, or 1 button and 1 exp pedal 👍
Yeah even just 2 extra buttons is a huge help with the hx stomp!
but only have 8 blocks, then depends on DSP
Correct, you get 8 blocks, but you can control those blocks with these methods
MIDI Baby needs a power supply though, yes?
Yup, and I have a little portable 9v adapter and attach a battery to that
I have a mesa boogie mkvii, i switch channels with midi on my Helix floor unit, if i hook up to hx stomp the same way, can i still use one of those disaster area midi switches as well?
If you do it with MIDI, then yeah you can do that with the stomp as well 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic thanx for the super fast reply!!! So the amps midi goes into midi in on stomp and disaster area switch to midi out to get them both going? Am I understanding correctly
Great video man! I'm thinking on getting a MC Morning star so I can control my looper RC300 and Hx stomp at the same time.
That would definitely be the device to do it! 🤘
Hi Scott, im trying to set up a sonicake expression and a single switch using TRS cable. The switch works fine, but the expression pedal is doing the 0-100 and then at half way its decreasing back to zero again!
Yeah that can happen, try using a TS cable and mess with some of the settings. I know I had that issue, but I cannot remember how to fix it
@@ScottUhlMusic thanks Scott....some posts say about inverting the tip/sleeve and setting to EXP2, but had no joy with that, so will keep experimenting!
Sorted it. Basically you need to bend up the middle contact on the output socket.... found it on Reddit 😊
I have been using the Fractal AX8 but have thought about switching to the Stomp for a smaller pedal board.
I love my stomp for sure! The portability and how powerful it still is is a major selling point for me
Wow thanks Scott for the video and giveaway! The little two button switch is certainly useful, as I can add it to a cheaper ampero control midi switch. I think less functions compared to any Morningstar. Maybe once you get your hands on it you could do a comparison video?
Thanks! Glad you like the video 🤘 And I plan to do a video on the Morningstar eventually
is there any chance to find a foot controller that connects to stomp via usb port?
The morning star mc 3, 6 or 8 🤘
Would it be possible to use two switches to get FS4, FS5 and also use an expression pedal for volume as well?
Not on the stomp, you only get 2 total
@@ScottUhlMusic ah okay, but one extra button + expression for volume would work?
Good stuff amigo! Currently a Helix Floor user and yet to get HX Stomp but cool thing is this helped me better understand the functionality of my Helix. Much obliged sensei!🙏

Hey Scott 🙋🏻♂️ love your channel man 🙏
What about virtual effects like amplitube or bias fx 2 ?….
Im almost positive those definitely work with midi controllers! I used it with Jam Up in this old video of mine: ua-cam.com/video/Lu9RG1CKEfQ/v-deo.html
Is it possible to use expression pedals through midi controller that has exp input?
You can use a midi expression pedal if the pedal sends midi messages and it’s plugged into the 5pin or the USB, that’s correct 👍

Thanks scott. Just enough detail. I’d love to know your set up for live looping.
Thanks man! I use the app Quantiloop for my solo cover live looping which I do a review on here: ua-cam.com/video/QmActvDJx7M/v-deo.html
My original music is a whole crazy setup in ableton with tracks, automated live looping, midi, lights, video, and more. I go over part of that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ewuyLdz8Vg4/v-deo.html
Cool video and would use the extra two buttons for changing modes instead of reaching down to the floor to hit the buttons all the time!
Yup! It helps a lot!
Scott, Im always waiting on your videos man!!! you teaching a lot, make a course about how to gigs, and I know we all will get it as soon as possible
Thanks man! I appreciate that :)
