We’re incredibly proud to feature this interview with Derek Shulman, Ray Shulman, John “Pugwash” Weathers, and Gentle Giant mega-fan Mike Keneally.
Steven Wilson’s remix of “Free Hand” is fantastic. It’s a huge improvement over the previous releases. The remix offers a clarity and an energy that I’ve never detected before. Mike and I rave about it in the video.
Even Derek Shulman says he thinks it sounds better than the original.
Take a listen and let us know what you think!
Steven Wilson’s “Free Hand” remix is available on June 25, 2021.

Bummer. I don't like Civilian as much as some of their earlier works, but it's still a good album.
Personally, I'd like to see some more live material come out. The Last Steps (from the Civilian tour) is a great live album but the recording quality is not that great.

I don't think it's because they were brilliant, but because what they've done will always be a little bit undigestible to the average listener.
More than that I think they never really quite got the ear of the guitar nerds like Crimson or Zappa did. It takes an interest in sitting inside of unusual rhythms in a way that maybe only Radiohead, Aphex Twin and perhaps Kendrick Lamar and J Dilla have really been able to bring to a wider audience.

it's really exciting to me to hear Ray speaking. I personally think his composing was some of the best music ever, prog or whatever you want to call it. His bass lines, acoustic guitar duets with Gary, his writing approach the most unique in all of prog, those looping contrapuntal sections with the accents on the ands of the beat, his Bartok folksy violin stuff, his great stage presence, I could go on forever.

Really cool to see someone ask them, and for them to talk a bit about, the fact that they did so many different (sometimes wildly different) arrangements of songs, or put together medleys of songs for their live show. That's serious work. I'm always surprised interviewers often don't ask them about that. There aren't many bands who do that sort of thing. Portnoy era Dream Theater is the only other band who come to mind (with Portnoy's rotating setlists and their medleys).

In 1979, I had a part time job at a hardware store. A co-worker friend of mine (the kind of person who loved 'weird' music) made cassettes for me of Gentle Giant's albums Freehand and Interview. I laid a couple Zappa cassettes on him ( I had just discovered Frank Zappa music). I still have the GG cassette's. I have loved their music from that first listen! I am forever grateful to GG and I'm pleased that people continue to discover them.
ps In the early 2000's , another friend gave me a CD of Mike Keneally, who had already blown me away with his playing on a couple Zappa albums.. HOLY WOW what an inventive guitarist! Makes sense that Mike K would be a mega fan of Gentle Giant.

Here is the common thing they say: "I had no idea music like this existed until you shared it with me. Thank you so much. My playlist has changed a lot...and for the better!" It's like the great movie line but I will tweak it a bit: If you play it for them, they will come around and love it!" There seems to be a resurgence in interest in Prog here on UA-cam. I always loved Gentle G.
Here's my answer to that of why now.
Because todays programmed noise is pure crap.
If was then..it was exploring the musical universe in a Jeep.
    Now here we Are.
Old Blues still rules, Old Motown was the driver, Progressive Rock was the best then. No boindries, just pure emotion.
And there's your answer. It was all about the moment. Not perfection..It was a great time in music.
And I do remember Rick Wakeman kicking over his Moog when if was not on que..
I was ..Yow! Following up Keith Emerson?. Not sure but he was pissed in the Round..
    Those were the daze.
    And I never forgot them.
Best music at the time..and I was 13..in SF...

I can still clearly remember the day that a close friend of mine, who was the engineer at Advision Studios asked me to help him destroy a large number of 8-track masters from their temperature and humidity controlled storage room.
He had rigged up an 8-track machine so that we could listen to some of them before we took a razor blade to them.
There were several Gentle Giant masters, and this was one of them.
We listened to it all the way through, and solo'd many of the tracks to better hear what was going on.
It's sad that the master recording of such a fantastic LP was lost - but apparently it had never been paid for by the record company, and Advision were within their rights to order it's destruction.

It is still a mystery to me that the guys who pulled the legacy into the 21st century live on stage (Three Friends band) are absent. Gary and Kerry.
I was lucky to see the last performance with Kerry in Wurzburg.

They talk a lot about how the live arrangements were drastically different from studio recordings, and yet we barely have any live footage from them whatsoever, how tragic!

The music is brilliant, I feel inside out should have been on the radio. I'd love to hear a remix of the second album. I also liked the missing piece (maybe not betting they could do it) but what a band - the power and the glory made them popular, free hand took them into the main stream (as much as possible anyway)

It's flourishing because 1) it is damn good, and 2) maybe more and more people are fed up with hip-hop and trashy stuff like that, and crave the complexities of so many "prog" acts from the 70s.

I already pre-ordered my copy a good month or o ago and it's GREAT! news to see that Wilson is also going to be doing the surround mixes for Interview and Civilian too. I already have the 2012 4.1 mixes of Freehand and Interview and even though I enjoy them I know that Wilson's job on the mixes will be much better. It would have been nice if the original Quad mixes were included too and having got into all this stuff back in the 70's the only real thing that entices me to buy music these days is Multichannel recordings. And it is mostly of the music I loved all those years ago rather than buying anything new that's out there. Basically, because there is bugger all out there these days and hardly anything new really floats my boat.

Just like the Beatles, great constructed and performed music will always be appreciated. During their heyday, Gentle Giant was considered too weird for the average rock-n-roller, but with time, many people(and their offspring) are starting to realize just what an amazing band G.G. was. It's too bad that they can't reunite for one live DVD performance, while they are still around...even get Phil back for a cameo...I know Gary has tried to keep the flame burning with Three Friends. Maybe the music is a bit too complicated for septuagenerians, but it would be greatly appreciated.

I got to see them live twice, but both times they were the opening band; once for Tull and once for Renaissance. IMO the main problem with the 2005 reissue was that whoever re-mastered it made it far too hot. If you look at the signal there's loads of clipping and unnecessary compression. Steven's new remix is far more dynamic, because he's allowed the transient peaks space to breath. It also helps that he's able to mix it all together digitally without any tape bounce-down issues causing excess noise to signal. That's why is sounds 'clearer' and 'more separated' Derek :) So there!
