Jordan, Gavin and Guthrie should join Steven for a GOAT record.
That is the single best lineup I've ever heard. Now what bassist are we gonna throw in there?
@@Ennello Tony Levin my man
@@Ennello Geddy Lee might be available.
@@Ennello if Tony isn't available, Bryan Beller comes with Guthrie, amazing player
Nick Beggs bassist
Porcupine tree saved my life. I wanted to commit suicide but PT got me going. Thank you ❤
Exactly the same here.
which songs specially saved your life
@@EmreT21 no particular song it was their music that got me out of that dark phase. Now ive been listening to other kinds of music mostly like intervals, DT, Polyphia, plini, some classical and Indian classical shit. I wanna listen to heavier music like i did when i was a teenager but I'm just never in the mood. 😅
All this machinery making modern music can still be openhearted.....
Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question
Of your honesty, yeah, your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music.
Miss them so much :(
Ulver is one of the best groups mixing more “organic” instrumentation and electronic music IMO. But there are so many artists doing this.
This was awesome to watch and listen to. Steven is in my top 3 favorite musicians of all time, along with Mikael Akerfeldt and Jonas Renkse. Speaking of Jonas, I'm hoping you will be able to get him on your Podcast sometime. That would be a amazing!
Steven Wilson is such a well spoken guy. I feel like he has so much to say about music snd the direction of music
Two of the Greatest!!!
Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree is the mix I didn't knew I needed.
Really enjoyed this! Good to see you guys, again!
I think it’s time that we get away from being stuck in one particular “genre”. We miss out on so much by being locked into this mentality. While I don’t like every artist making music, I generally find something I like in every type of music including music made with electronic means. If it’s done well it’s done well. I hope to see you both collaborate in the future.
Preach! I really think this attitude is going to be the future of music
YES! Even some people who consider themselves open-minded because they listen to off-beat forms of prog and metal can be closed-minded about anything outside their genres. I know it's all a matter of taste, and there's plenty of music I don't care for, but I truly believe putting the effort into understanding and appreciating good music in forms that I don't usually listen to has helped to broaden my perspective on life in general.
Preaching to the choir! As a former "metal-head" and "prog-head," I have to say I loathe my former closed-minded approach to music appreciation. The fatigue I felt back then from non-stop "progressive" rock was so potent. The variety I enjoy now is so freeing and unpretentious. I love it.
I think true progressive music is anything that actually progresses musical artistry forward, not a limited collection of genre tropes. So, I'm a subscriber to the Robert Fripp definition.
@@Progger11 I spent a long time listening to all kinds of rock, metal, classical, and jazz, but usually avoided the radio-friendly stuff. Then, I made my way to 70's prog. When I first heard some of the neo-prog and newer alt-prog, I didn't like it because it sounded too "poppy," but I didn't believe that made it objectively "bad," as some do. I kept coming back to it to give my brain a chance to adjust and form expectations about the style of music, and now some of those bands are among my favorites.
@@Seth-fg4ho I mean... It's still under the "prog" label. Not that much of a stretch. I'm talking about rap, actual pop, electronic, and other "lowly" genres most prog snobs see as inferior.
Two of my very favorite musicians , Thank you for this video ! We are so lucky to be alive for these amazing musical Gods!
I'd love to see a collaboration between these 2 geniuses! Thanks for this one, Jordan!
Fantastic stuff, loved this!!
Awesome, amazing, Steven Wilson the spirit of Yeshua in his fingers though his soul too are ears. 😎😭
"They're speaking the language of the Gods"
Oh yes I've been waiting for this
Two legends!
I have an album in mind to make that's combining some of the things you're talking about here, and hearing that discussion at the start has really given me another layer of confidence that it's a solid concept to pursue - thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Best of luck, buddy! Hope it comes out nicely
@@juankgonzalez6230 thanks a lot! I have a lot of ideas mapped out in different stages, so rather than try and make them all at once, I let them grow naturally piece by piece when something relevant or inspiring comes up
Things like this video and your comment are good motivators for that exact record so cheers!
reflections of two masters.. Love You !
This was a genuinely interesting conversation.
Check out Steven's podcast with Tim Bowness if you haven't. Similar vibe
@@jazzA99123 I've heard of it but never listened to an episode, thanks for the reminder
Nice discussion, take care gentlemen
Steven plays it so close to the chest here, *barely* even hints that he’s been working on an album that everyone’s been dying for- aka: Porcupine Tree is back together! He just won’t come out and say it here though
Kalandra is a band that's mixing Electronic and old sounds with sucsess.
Check out Slow Motion live.
And by the way Billy Eilish was inspired
by Aurora who allso is mixing Electronic and old sounds.
Need English subtitles
There are loads of rock bands mixing electronics, for example: The latest Pain of Salvation, Leprous, Between the Burried and Me, Nine Inch Nails, Ulver, Dillinger Escape Plan did it before they sadly stopped.
I disagree with a great deal of what Steven Wilson is saying. I and my friends grew up with prog. Originally it was classed as progressive, not the Prog rock it is called today, the meaning as changed. That's why King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Can, Klaus Schulze and the rest all sounded completely different, there were no rules.
Electronic music was always there, although the first few Klaus Schulze albums didn't actually contain electronics as such as at that time there wasn't any. He used what he could to create that sound. Then with the aid of these musicians electronics were created. So electronic music has always been a part of progressive music, so Mr Wilson is way off the mark there and he should know better.
We are in the demographic he talks about but we also like fusion, jazz, classical (where electronic were first used by the way) and yes electronic music. We love Autechre, I have everything they have released including the collaborations, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and many others including Matthew Florianz, Mathias Grassow along with bands like Supersilent. So I'm afraid Mr Wilson is way off the mark. He is welcome to come and see my music collection if he needs proof of the diversity that the first generation of progressive fans have in their collections. We are not classic rock fans, stuck with one area of taste. True progression as no boundaries.
I used to think he knows what he's talking about but in recent years it feels like he is in his own little world and as become removed from real people like us progressive fans. We are not stuck in the past like he seems to think.
The issue with his last album and why a lot of progressive fans didn't buy it wasn't the change in style. It was because there was nothing new on the album. It might have been different for him, although not as different as some people made out but musically, others had done it before years ago. Plus, the songs weren't particularly very good.
Anyway, my point is that what he says here and in other interviews over the last couple of years, I personally and the people I know, completely disagree with him and think he is completely wrong on every level.
I'll also just add that he talks about Autechre and Boards of Canada, both brilliant as something new but they have been around for over twenty years, it's not new.
Like you I grew up on Prog back in the 70s and like you I spread my wings and I like all genres. IMO we're rarities and most people I know only really stick to one or two genres .
Yeah right. Jordan should have called you instead of Steven for the interview 👍
@@gauravdey9631 All I've written is true. Investigate the music I've given as examples and hear for yourself. Investigate electronic music and how long the so called new artists have been releasing albums, it's all true so cannot be argued against.
If that is all correct, which it is. It proves Steven Wilson doesn't know what he's talking about, simple fact. No one is infallible.
I feel peaceful.. when I see sw
Deadly combo
Steven mentions "'counterpoint" --
Except for the master himself (JSB); look into Matt Smith of Theocracy and Project Aegis --
ie "I Am" and "And The Rest is Mystery" --
Can't figure out what artist he's mentioning at 5:58 haha. Boilter canada?
Boards of Canada
Genius
Wonder if they've heard of Reid Willis
My favorite Bands PT Rush DT never das DT Life
They should do an album together called „just GOAT“ 😂
try shpongle for trippy electronic
I am waiting for you new album future bites and let me think my eternal rains lyrics for you😂
come on steven, call guthrie back and let the electronic argument for Genesis in the eighties.
well i have news for you guys.. genesis do this mixture of rock and electronic music it in the eighties... 🥴
This is not for everyone
It always amazes me that people think artists like Autechre and Aphex Twin are interesting....yet a group like Plaid or many other IDM artists that to me seems way more nuanced, explorative and constantly recreating themselves get so little love.
Aphex Twin in particular is a bit of a mystery to me how it got so popular. Im a fan of pretty "weird" stuff ....but theres loads of other instances where similar sounding music is deemed as weird. I like a couple of his tracks but that's it. I still dont get how he got so popular. Is he a producer, and got "connected" that way?
Cool bit, not paying patreon tho lmao, sorry
Live cHat. These people earning millions for putting out mediocre pop songs.
The REAL new Music is CLASSICAL Music ..WAY more evolute than ANY electro crap. One single note from Bach worth the entire prefabricated sounds from dumb machines.
I like both.
Good for you. I like both. Music is Music for anyone who has a musical ear. If Bach had a console, a PC and the production software/hardware we have today, he'd have rocked out a few electronic greats, don't you think? Its all evolution and what is available.
@@sansubr19 Exactly. Progressive Music has no boundaries. Prog rock as become a style with parameters, originally there were no rules, they were ripping up any rule book. Many, many artists still do and older artist did, no matter what the genre. Great original music is great music, whatever instruments are used. 👍
@@sansubr19 Completely WRONG! The greatness of Bach and the classical composers is that they just use their brains and hands in order to create masterpieces, any idiot can make music using electronic toys, I can assure you that classical composers music will be here until the end of humanity and will be always considered THE MUSIC because it is the most evoluted and intelligent of all.and don't need a dumb computer in order to be played.
@@margix1172 Bach was a product of his time. If he was alive today he would still be a product of our time now. You have no idea what he would use today to stand out musically.
