I always liked Ron. Super nice, no matter who won our game (I probably played him 5 times). He was always willing to analyze our games, even though he was always higher rated than me.
I was wondering if we were going to see a game between Mr Finegold and Ben, and I wasn't disappointed! Real emotion at the end though, I'm sure that he was proud. Please pass our love and admiration on to Mrs Finegold too 💙
Thank you to Mr and Mrs Finegold for giving us the one and only Chad GM Ben Finegold. Seriously though your lectures on openings and great players of the past are the best on UA-cam It helps a lot of chess fans from all over the world.
My dad taught me chess too. Not to this standard, of course, but I remember getting my first chess board and pieces one Christmas. Then the following year he bought me a chess engine machine, so I had a "strong" opponent to play against (as long as it didn't crash when you were entering a move, which was frustrating on higher settings as it took hours per move). Good times. My dad passed away over 20 years ago now, and I still miss him every day Ben. That's just proof to me you are a nice person. Keep on doing you, my dude.
Favourite lecture - great stories, great dad, and a great son, he must have been very proud of you. My dad and I have played competitive golf and football (soccer) together, so I can relate.
I used to live in Odessa with my ex, who was my fiancee at the time, and I remember seeing a lot of Church's chicken places. She and I sometimes went there after we both got home from work. Very cool story about its Chess connection!
The last few family stories reminded me of my grandfather who passed away when I was 13, he taught me how to play and what I wouldn’t give to play one more game with him.
This is a real reminder that our time with our parents isn't infinite. My dad doesn't play chess, though, so Ben is extremely fortunate to have shared that with his own father.
Your father Ron Finegold seems like quite the inspiration, his peak reminds me of how chess was unique in the 1960s, the only time NM Bernard Parham (a local notable figure) won a state championship.
this video, is not only about " great chess player ", it's about GM son pay respect to his father!!! at the end of day FAMILY LOVE, RESPECT IS EVERYTHING!!! BIG LIKE FROM ME
The internets tells me that air conditioning was first put into cars in the early 40s. In the 60s (not sure when in the 60s), about 20% of cars had air conditioning, but 80% of cars in the southwest had air-conditioning. The first time air-conditioning was not an extra charge, but was standard, was in a certain model in 1968.
There are a lot of places where A/C still isn't really needed. I used to live in New England, and mostly survived on a diet of box fans and window units not turned on until July. We think of it as normal, but it's really energy-hungry. Don't turn it on if you don't need it, folks!
San Antonio Texas is still hot! My dad taught me to play chess when I was eight, after Bobby Fischer became world champion. I won the Texas Futurity tournament in 1979. I was 13 years old. I miss my dad too! He died when I was 22.
Interesting facts: this GW church is actually GW church Jr, his father started church's chicken and passed away in 1956. Bill, or GW Jr, started operations around 1962. So it's possible this is one of if not his first public efforts to advertise his business after his father passed.
It says on wikipedia that the guy that founded Church's Chicken, George W. Church Sr., died in 1956. So he came back from the grave 8 years later to play one last chess tournament in 1964? lol

I never knew Ben had a father
i thought Ben was here before time itself
Ben: "Ben, I am your father"
Ben: "Nooooo, it's impossible!"
No... Ben *IS* the Father.
Yeas, his farther even had a friend who was a burger. Damn, life in America is wonderful.
It happened before he was born
I like how Ben casually throws one of the saddest things said at the end of the video. Spend time with your parents people.
frankly thankful.
Thankly, frankful
Thankfully Frank
That ending though
The truth really do hurt sometimes
It really do be like that sometimes.

Way to underhandedly sneak in there that you beat him
You must be the father of Grandmaster Ken West!
@@NJ-wb1cz Literally went out of his way to keep it ambiguous who won, lost, or drew
@@etymonlegomenon931 exactly! Some people just love to stir up shit. Ben was actually my coach 20 yrs ago.
Ben's Midwestern accent really comes out when he says the phrase "my dad". Frankly, adorable.
I can't detect it. What timestamp? Then again, I didn't know midwestern US had an accent.
that ending from Ben is the first time I've seen him saying something really heartfelt.

Horray! Sorry I wasn't able to make it to the stream. Thanks for uploading, Ben.

Sun Tzu, probably.

This is a beautiful lecture, he'd be so proud. Made me want to show my dad more appreciation

Wish your dad peace in rest and a Long Happy life for yourself Sir
I was a student of Ron’s in Flint, MI back when he had a chess store there…good times. Learned a lot
Damn it was really sad at the end. Thanks for the lecture Ben!

@@Nekromageofapocalyp haha sorry yeah Odessa Texas. I used to always just say "we live near Midland" since people know that name better
Ben is right about AC. It was a luxury option in some cars in the early 60s, but most of them didn't have it.
The last few family stories reminded me of my grandfather who passed away when I was 13, he taught me how to play and what I wouldn’t give to play one more game with him.
Excellent tribute. Good video
It’s called Church’s Chicken because you have to pray to God that you don’t poop your pants after eating it. True story.
It probably was really good when the original guy was in charge. Same for KFC.
This is a real reminder that our time with our parents isn't infinite. My dad doesn't play chess, though, so Ben is extremely fortunate to have shared that with his own father.

I appreciate you Ben. Thanks for what you do.
Ayyy another lecture!
Yeah, A/C was mostly an option except in the deep south where it was fairly common. Up north, say Ohio/Pennsylvania definitely not standard equipment.
Go Finegolds! Thanks Ben.
go ron!
May he rest in peace, your videos are awesome man never stop
I wish I had spent time and played some games with Ron on a regular basis. Time flies, you get busy. Regrets.

this family deserves a "succession-promotion" series...
BTW, congrats Ben on doing a lecture on your father. Good son.
There was no interstate highway system in 1962, so it'd have been 2-lane roads, with tractors and slow trucks... :)
Someone please sponsor Judit Polgar such a beast
Nice lecture, you’re the BenjaMAN
Go Finegolds!
I miss my dad too.
Very nice video
Awesome 👍
No, they did not have AC in those days... And, if you did install them as an add-on, they'd cause the engine to overheat... on hot days. :)
We'll never know which of those is Ben's dad because the pointer was disabled. God Damnnn.
38:22 And don’t call me Shirley.
Only Ben could find a way to lecture about AC during a chess game.
It's tough for old people to play a 6 hours long game but for a 10 years old kid? I would think it is impossible. Unbelievable.
By 1960 about 20% of all cars in the U.S. had air-conditioning, with the percentage increasing to 80% in the warm areas of the Southwest.

My car doesn't have air conditioning in 2022.
Which is good as prolonged AC exposure gives me bronchitis.
