Never owned a Gibson. Have 4 Martins. It’s about the individual instrument. Identical one of same vintage might be way different in character. My own favorite happens to be a 1929 Martin 2-17. Parlour size. Next favorite ‘46 Martin 0-17. These are easy to play. True vintage sound. The sound rings out for long time. There is no replacement for aged well made guitars. If I had to start over, I would seek out a real vintage “player”.

Acoustics I have ever played was $3500 Martin 000- 28, 50 years ago! That was a lot of money for it. It also had a top crack along edge of bridge! It sang like no
Other and was extremely playable. I still ruminate about that angelic guitar.
I’ve tried other similar ones. They were all good. But not like that one. It’s the particular individual that stood out. They are made from wood which comes from individual trees or different cuts of the same tree.
There are as many variables in guitars as there are in people!

The more the Martin is played. Where your arm rests. And the back, up against the body. and where it sits on your leg will get shiny. The neck on my D18 came in a satin finish.. 3 months later. The neck is very shiny and glossy..

Its a myth about Gibson quality control, both Martin and GIbson have had periods of bad quality control both are now making excellent acoustics.

As an owner of all of the big 3 companies, as well as a few customs from smaller companies, I can safely say that Martins are unbelievably overrated in my opinion. I own a D28 and D45… have even played a D200. Not really impressed with any of them compared to some others. Other than the fact that they’ve been around for nearly two centuries, I’m not really sure why there are so many diehard Martin fanboys out there talking them up as if there’s nothing else that comes close. It simply is not true

martin sounds better, but I'm not a fan of the fake wear, but I'm not a fan of blond women either its a matter of taste, have you got any vintage guitars ?
I love the sound and vibe of vintage acoustics, don't own any electrics, age just does something special to guitars, like people most not all get more interesting with age, i enjoyed ya video, its honest and not over produced, keep doing you Peter, if you get a chance try an old kalamazoo they have bags of character, I have a 1938 KG 14 i call her Maggie after my grandmother, she turned the air blue what a character she was, the guitar is like her, not the easiest guitar to play but Maggie literally sounds like Robert Johnson is in the room with me, I just got a 1974 Martin D35, needs a bit of work but holy moly the sound is incredible, I love Gibson I have a J35 2016 she is lovely, Eastman make some lovely parlour guitars.
@cruelycruel1032 thanks very much C C. You have some wonderful guitars there. I had a 79 D28 from new and sold it after 40 years as it needed a neck reset. But the one that got away was a pre war Gibson L00. I bought it in 74 but didn't know then what I had. Put it in part ex for the martin. I bought the D18 with the faux 53 top coz I'd started looking for a real birth year guitar but they were way too expensive for me. I laughed out loud when I saw this. Ironically, it might be the best sounding martin I've owned. Crazy.

Martin sounds better… Gibsons neck breaks 😂very often and the quality is very poor

I own a vintage (1971) J50 bought new by me in 1971 and it has had some work (refret, new bridge and bridge plate, tuners) and a 2019 D35 and 2014 D12-28 Martins. ALL are awesome but have different voices. NONE of my guitars are case queens, they all hang on the wall in easy reach and get played daily. Another instrument playing in the room drives and resonate the strings and the tops on ALL of them, I hear them sing back to me as I play one of them like I have a reverb in the room. Cases for transport out to play or hurricane evacuations.
