I have to hand it to Philip IV; at least he and his court made sure we'd have plenty of stunning Velazquez paintings to appreciate.
I give tours of Madrid and I say that that and the Retiro are just about the only good thing he left Spain .

You're getting quite good at doing these sorts of videos. They're well paced, use citations of historians effectively, and go into a fair amount of detail.
If you're considering doing another series on the history of a major power (especially France or the Byzantines), I'll definitely be looking forward to it.

There is a song in Dutch about the capture of the fleet carrying the silver. It was made around the time it happened and is called 'De Zilvervloot'. It praises the actions of captain Piet Hein and of course the capture of the ships and silver.

Of the 1,200 Indies fleets, with the treasure and with money and trade that traveled from America-Spain and Spain-America in 250 years, the English captured 2 fleets (17th century, in port and without prior declaration of war). Netherlands captures 2 fleets (XVII century). 4 shipwrecks. Success of the Spanish fleet of 99.75%.
The money that came to Europe gave Spain a 150-year hegemony, and we developed an empire in Asia.
Mexico and Peru produce more gold and silver each year of the 21st century than the Spanish Empire did in 100 years.
Great video and glad to see Prof. Elliot get some recognition. His books and essays, including his classic study of Olivares, really offered a great deal of insight into the decline of imperial Spain.
Video idea: you become roman emperor after marcus aurelius or augustus or constantin or whoever. You have to reform the empire so that it survives as long as possible. No geniva conventions or anything like that, everything you deem necessary is okay
In defense of the genetically ill advised marriages by Philipp II. and Philipp IV.: both didn’t intend to marry their nieces at first but rather wanted their heirs to marry their first cousins (which is significantly more healthy). But both were in the situation where said heir died and they were left without heirs while also not having a wife as they died as well. So both decided to marry their nieces themselves out of circumstance.
As usual, quite excellent. I think in history classes, we focus so much on Charles II of Spain's tragedy of birth that we overlook his role in the causes of the War of the Spanish Succession. Definitely a good one to revisit next year in terms of my approach to it.

Another amazing video... love how well paced it is, and the good amount of detail they go into the House of Habsburgs history.
Oh and Spectrum, if you ever do another rankings video, One that I would suggest is the Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, of which there were 47, and if not, the rulers of the Kingdom of Georgia, which existed from 1003 to 1490, and had 30 rulers.... just some ideas....

Anybody find it weird that nearly all European monarchies are ruled by families who did not originate from the kingdom they rule?
We can thank the HRE for the many, many German-based monarchies.

The idea of a nation state ruled by and for people of one nation didn't develop untill the 19th century in the form of nationalism, so in that case I would say that most people wouldn't find it weird at that time.

If only the Juan of Trastámara survived, keeping the trust of Castile and Aragon in the crown with proper taxing and avoiding the poisoned inheritance of the Habsburgs.
But well, Charles I and Phillip II were outstanding. The descendents only had to just keep it tight, small, no big plans.
Olivares had a great plan, all crowns working as One, would have worked if under the Trastámaras. Anyway, centralization would be slower, but achieved, at least the Bourbons could do it, but in a very quick and unwelcomed way.
Diplomacy was secondary to power and war, sadly.
Or if Miguel d'Avis survived and united the iberian kingdoms. The Habsburgs just had too many enemies it was not going to work even if all kings were as good as Philip and Charles.

Spanish decadence?
Perhaps it is a decadence compared to the immense power that Spain had for 150 years in Europe, between 1500-1650 (Napoleon 15 years, Hitler's Germany 3 years, the United Kingdom only small islands in Europe: Ireland, Cyprus, Malta...) No you can lose what you've never had.
But the 18th century is a time of economic and military recovery of the Spanish empire, which doubles its territory: great plains of the USA, western coasts of the USA and Canada, Luisiana, Florida, Uruguay, Italy, Equatorial Guinea in Africa, Islands in Oceania... We defeated the British in various wars, capturing hundreds of Royal Navy ships and we defeated Austria. We also gave the USA the Spanish dollar and independence.
Napoleon is the problem, also for all of continental Europe and for France.
Only the islands, such as the United Kingdom or Malta, were saved.
Spanish was the hegemonic power of Europe until the end of Thirty Years War, because in this period they lost the kingdom of Portugal, and the control of the Rosellón and the Netherlands
But at that time we beat France in Italy (1648), Catalonia (1652) and Belgium (1695). It must be remembered that Spain had mortgaged its resources in the civilization of America, which was 70% reinvestment, with an emigration until 1700, of 600,000 Spaniards to America, almost all men of fighting age, who had lost their crops due to the drought and locust plagues. Protestant countries did not have those investments and problems. All the money from their commercial empires, underdeveloped and enemies of Spain, went to London, Paris and Amsterdam until almost XX century. We could hardly trade with them in war. But they did trade among themselves. France had 2.5 the population of Spain. Spain had been at war almost since the year 1500 (more than 150 years of war).
Furthermore, Spain fought almost alone, between 1640-1668, against France, England, Protestant Germany, the Netherlands, the Turkish Empire, revolts in Portugal, Italy and Catalonia, Sweden, Denmark, Morocco, Berber pirates, Filipino Moors, Chinese and Japanese pirates. , Mapuches of Chile and Apaches of the Great Plains.
Those types of wars (but with far fewer problems) destroyed Napoleon's empire in 15 years, with Paris invaded and Napoleon taken prisoner. Hitler was defeated in 6 years of war, with Berlin occupied and he dead. The British only had small islands in Europe: Ireland, Cyprus and Malta... and the island itself to avoid annoying invasions.
The Spanish empire resisted, saved the Catholic religion against half the world (today the majority in the countries of Europe where we fought for centuries) and in the 18th century we largely recovered, defeating the British countless times in America and invading Italy again, to complete our legacy, the greatest world legacy in native and Christianized speakers.
