  • In higher education, there rages a never-ending battle over its purpose. Should colleges and universities teach students to think or the skills to get a job? Dr. Carol Strong proposes a different solution: teach them how to research. In this enlightening talk, Dr. Strong explains how research is valuable for every student and how the skills learned can positively impact their future. Dr. Carol Strong is an Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM), where she has worked since January 2008. As a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, she received her M.A. in European Studies from Monash University (Australia), then went on to complete her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Melbourne (Australia). She has been a member of the Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR) and a Councilor for the Social Sciences Division (SSD) since 2012. She took 120 students to 36 state/national/international conferences (including San Juan Puerto, Rico; Berlin and Oldenburg, Germany, and Doha, Qatar), supervised 10 papers that were finalists/winners in state/national/international competitions, supervised or co-supervised 4 projects receiving grants from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, prepared teams for group simulation competitions and facilitated 6 field study programs to major U.S. cities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have never got this deep in what an undergraduate research is. This video made me think whether I am ready to write an academic paper or not. I don’t think that I am ready to write an academic paper in this way because I often get list in the papers that I read and can’t identify the main idea of it. This makes my writing process very hard. Sometimes I confuse different ideas and combine them without introducing each of them separately and properly. Is it academic? Of course no but that happens every time I do an undergraduate research. However, as I know about this problem, I work hard on that to improve the way I do research and write papers.
