Johnny Guitar Watson was one of the greatest musicians and showmen ever. I remember reading how he saw T-Bone Walker walk around playing with a 50 feet cord so he decided to get a 100 feet cord and enter from behind the audience. He also taught the great Etta James how to phrase when she sang. If you listen to Etta’s early Chess stuff and listen to his early songs like “The Eagle is Back” you can hear the similarities in they way they sing.

There were a ton of lead guitarists before Watson. It was his use of reverb and distortion and his frenetic playing style that got the attention. Especially because he was more of a reserved player before that 1954 release.

It will never cease to amaze me how much things used to change musically and culturally in the second half of the 20th century.
From 1954 to 1967 is just 13 years, but it's a completely different place... Same from 1967 to 1980 (from hippies to new wave and heavy metal) or from 1980 to 1993 (grunge, anyone?).
In the meantime, has anything really changed from 2010 to 2023? Beyond slightly updated cellphones and slightly faster Internet???
