It's too bad Gene Bordinat didn't push the European division to accept the US body stampings though, their softer lines aged much better once the plastichrome was stripped away. The Euro car's sharp creases looked really dated by 1989-90.
My Dad had the same Ford escort in a brown colour, and it wasn’t a Ghia but was a 1.6 GL. It was a nice car, but the Ghia’s interior and exterior features, like chrome wheel trims offered another level of luxury. And unlike a lot of cars in that era the plastics used for the interior, the dashboard did not look cheap and nasty. It was a well made car. Sad to say, even though cars today are built with more technology, for me, they lack that special something these cars had back in the day.
The Escort was quite a good car, but not as good as it could have been as the ride could be harsh on poor roads and the engines weren't as smooth as the Astra. However, it was a big leap forward from the Mark 2 and looked far more modern inside and out, and being fwd meant rear passengers had more room.
Ford wanted a piece of the hatchback pie, and as many people and manufacturers switched to hatchbacks, Ford responded accordingly by making the new Escort as a hatchback, and eventually also introduced an estate and frugal diesels, and to mourn the passing of the Cortina, responded to saloon lovers by making the Escort-based Orion which was a lovely car that gave a bit more rear legroom and luggage space than the Escort it was based on, and continued into Escort Mk4 guise and the Mk5 Escort, before the name was quickly retired and the name Escort was plastered on all Mk5 / Mk6 Escorts.
Good looking car and more modern than the Mark 2, but let down by a very harsh ride, asthmatic 1.1 versions and base models that were like punishmennt vehicles lacking even a rear demister. I much preferred the Vauxhall Astra, which felt like a miuch bigger car and rode better.
It was such a well proportioned car!

"Simple is efficient" is also my motto!
I always thought the Escort Mk3 was very well proportioned and the best looking amongst its contemporaries.
These did go quick, especially on the sills.
Shame the 20 stage body and paint process seemed to cause some examples to rust at only 4 years of age...

Wonder what the " 20 " stages were in body and paint protection?
1 coat of paint and 19 people saying ' yeah that'll do'
20 stage body protection and paint process? Pahaha....they rusted for fun 😮
Didn't stop me buying 2 of them tho 😂
