I do this a bit differently this time. I tune my Guitar to Open E & put a capo on the 3rd Fret to get Open G w/ a High G String aka Open G Terz Tuning. Bit more clarity on the top end plus I can now transpose the song by moving the capo up & down the neck.
Hi Justin what would you say is a tuning that simplifies guitar playing for people who have difficulty (for medical / quasi-medical reasons) with the physical part of playing guitar. That is, if such a tuning exists. If I am not mistaken, even Joni Mitchell had a medical reason for getting into open tunings. P.S. I do hope you see this :) Thanks!
Brilliant for slide I'm hopeless with standard tuning on slide but this makes it sound like you have a clue what your playing also try open E that sounds cool for slide
I understand what you'er doing I just can't get that 1st E string to a D. Can you help me with that I've used a tuner but it won't reach that D. I'm getting discouraged help.
Hey mate, I'm trying to learn a piece called "The mist-covered mountains of home". It's basically this tuning, except it says a Bflat, so would that mean on my electronic tuner I tune it to B(b), the bracketed 'b' equaling the funny flat symbol? Or should I just keep it on the normal B and ignore the flat all together? Cheers bud.
Hi Justin, thanks so much for the lesson. Can you do video on how to play minor chords, 7th chords, minor 7th chords, and suspended chords in open G tuning? I haven't found one good tutorial on UA-cam yet. Thanks.
Thanks for the insight, Justin (it brokedown the essence of a lot of the Stones sounds) however, after several years of playing regular 6-string, I've decided to explore resonator guitar more and I notice the open-G tuning a lot and I have seen different tunings for open G... One method is the way you just showed and the other method I've seen is GBDGBD...and that is what I was looking for, but I did not know which way to turn the strings...whether up to it, or down to it... and when I saw you tune down, I then realized that the way you are showing is great for fretting down with fingers because now the action has been lowered... however, my issue, since I'm using a resonator guitar (Epiphone Hound Dog Deluxe, round neck) and I am developing a style to use a slide bar more while still playing upright, and the action on these two E[iphone HD's I just got is a high-wire act for sure, but the high action is more for the bar clearance over frets and more volume, I guess... so, I wonder, for a resonator guitar would you tune up to open G using an alternate form...and, I ask 'tune UP to' rather than 'DOWN to' because one might be seeking a higher string action because of playing style?
Would you mind doing a tutorial of how to tune the G string up to an A without breaking the string? I've been trying to play a song that has an alternate tuning with tuning the G string up a full step, but my string breaks every time. Thanks so much.
For whatever reason my guitar can handle open G, but it just cant handle staying in Open A. The bridge floates a little bit. Are you supposed to tune the first 3 strings up a tone or down enough to get the same notes? That just sounds dangerous to do
The notes for open G tuning are: D G D G B D 6th, 5th and 1st string are de-tuned so their tension is reduced. You can use this without having to setup your guitar or change strings. If this is your regular tuning, it is worth buying a custom string set - heavier gauge - and getting an open G setup. Also, many open G players remove the 6th string. You mention open A. The notes for open G tuning are: E A E A C# E. Overall, the tension will be greater. Any guitar with a tremolo system is going to be affected by a raised bridge. Tightening the spring screws can offset that. Going for a custom set of lower gauge strings can also help. Awesome lesson man, i must be honest though, ive been playing for years and ive never known that. Also, no disrespect but you totally look like norm macdonald! :D
No Pete, what you are doing when tuning this way is creating a G-chord when the guitar is strummed open (ie. not fretted) And a G major chord has only three notes G-B-D (the 1st, 3rd and 5th respectively) Cheers.

So Keith Richard's has been cheating all this time. Unbelievable...

Shouldn't the G be a G#?
No Pete, what you are doing when tuning this way is creating a G-chord when the guitar is strummed open (ie. not fretted) And a G major chord has only three notes G-B-D (the 1st, 3rd and 5th respectively) Cheers.
OK, you have to do some Stones lessons now mate!
Thanks great vid.
