Sweet Jesus in Heaven! They don't even give the audience enough time to applaud between earth-shattering solos! If all bluegrass were this good, it would break a lot of stereo-types for us mountain folk.
drockkclapton will Amen to that apparently Bluegrass has this big stigma or it when people ask me what I like for music and I tell him Bluegrass and say what the hell is that well I would rather refer them to this
True Bluegrass used to be good-all the originators have passed, just like the Blues originators. At best, only interpreters' now. Some listenable, most not or impossible... dreadful. All genres now are 'interpreters'.
They're playing so fast it looks like the film was sped up but you can tell it wasn't because the people in background are moving normal speed. Phenomenal musicians.
You wake up at 4am and realize you have a 600 mile drive ahead, walk into the kitchen look in the cupboard, out of coffee. Its ok though just put this on repeat and get on down the road!
Yes, the great Bobby Hicks AND Charlie Cline on twin-fiddles. Carlos Brock on gtr and Ernie Newton on bass. Of course, Bill on mando and one of his great numbers. But the real showcase here is JACKIE PHELPS on 5-string banjo, of all things, and playing "Scruggs-style" with TWO fingers, NOT THREE!!
Nick Hornbuckle the banjo player for John Reischman and the Jaybirds plays similarly with two fingers. Apparently his middle finger isn't up to the task so he does it with two as did Jackie Phelps here.
@edcampbell6164 It's incredible that you know that kind of detail. Thanks. I've played this clip over 50 times. It's highly impressive. Goosebumps every time.
That's Bobby Hicks from Newton NC on fiddle(left side). His claim to fame later on was being a member of the Bluegrass Album Band which included Tony Rice, J.D. Crow, Doyle Lawson, and Jerry Douglas. He is now 80 yrs. young and still sounds great.
if Doc Brown and Mattie from back to the future ask me tonight where you wanna go ?!?!? i'm definitely gonna go back to this gig on this date END OF. much love for the blue grass from Ireland xx
He is serious and he is professional for sure - That's the Great Bobby Hicks as a young man - he's still with us and fiddlin' just as great. One of the greatest "twin" (harmony) fiddlers in the business.
amazing... hey to all bill monroe fans from Australia. America was an interesting 400 year experiment. listen to the music... sounds like it really worked out good
Saw Bill in Dallas, 1991ish. They started late at a club and Bill was PUNK. He'd walk over and nudge a guy while they played. Oh, and the Dixie Chicks opened for him, but headed to Nashville that week!
I'm sorry, Donna, but, no, that is most definitely Jackie Phelps on banjo playing the way he did it - TWO finger (not three) but still a "Scruggs-style" sound. Jackie was a great 2-finger guitar player (either rhythm or "Merle Travis-style" lead) and played guitar for Bill, both on stage and on some recordings.
Donna, sorry to disappoint you, this is Jackie Phelps. Look at some of the Flatt & Scruggs TV shows to see Stringbean (David Akeman), quite a different look. He was indeed Monroe's first banjo player (before Scruggs) but that was in the WWII years, this clip is from the 1950s
Donna Wheeler That is incorrect that is not Stringbean on playing the banjo. First String played clawhammer style -- this is two finger picking, and Second and most important this recording is from 1954 and Stringbean was a Bluegrass Boy 10 years earlier, finally Stringbean was taller then Bill.
The fear in the fiddlers eyes Bill kicked it off so fast😂😂😂😂
Best tune launch ever

That number blows me away . . . They were all great - and they knew it. You didn't play with Bill Monroe unless you were the best.
You wake up at 4am and realize you have a 600 mile drive ahead, walk into the kitchen look in the cupboard, out of coffee. Its ok though just put this on repeat and get on down the road!
Bobby hicks and Charlie cline.on twin fiddles..1957..there.Hicks just a great fiddle player..monroe.
Oh boy woot woot! Jackie Phelps kicking in the "blue" side of Bluegrass! What a spirit

My question was fiddle players..bobby hicks and Charlie cline...2 greats..I guess time was 1957..ronoake was recited 1955..rjones.
Curly Ray Cline?
Mark Vandyke his brother Charlie
Sorry Charlie Cline is standing by the guitar player and the other one is Bobby hicks
He kicked that song the hell off!!
I'm so totally blown away by those boy's I'm dumbstruck...
Oh boy, that is fantastic music!
I think my laptop just caught fire...
Man, Monroe could fly high, fast, and long!
i wish i was around in these days, such fun. yeeee ahh !!
Jackie Phelps plays such a fine banjo. I wonder why in other clips he is "only" playing guitar backing the others. He also has great stage presence.
guenther schoenlau He played whatever was needed for a gig. The guitar player had been in the band all of two days here
@edcampbell6164 It's incredible that you know that kind of detail. Thanks.
I've played this clip over 50 times. It's highly impressive.
Goosebumps every time.
Bobby has been very good for a very long time, He always puts a smile on my face
Jackie Phelps made this Clip..His personality shines thru lol .He's loving it, and I am too
0:30 "i own this. nothin' to do here."
Im pleased to say hes still going strong. God bless him.
if Doc Brown and Mattie from back to the future ask me tonight where you wanna go ?!?!? i'm definitely gonna go back to this gig on this date END OF. much love for the blue grass from Ireland xx
Oh yeah Bill Monroe's the boss right there just leaving all the rest of the musicians right into that whole bit beautiful
pure gold
The guy fiddling on the left has such a serious look on his face. True professional right there......
That's Bobby Hicks.
serious??? Good eye!
That is him for sure, he gave me a few lessons back in 1971. Definitely that is Bobby Hicks.
He is serious and he is professional for sure - That's the Great Bobby Hicks as a young man - he's still with us and fiddlin' just as great. One of the greatest "twin" (harmony) fiddlers in the business.
Foot tap = PRO
Omg is the banjo player Jackie Phelps
The very best, makes my day.
this could be the best song of all time :) #BillMonrow
Turn it right up! IT DOESN'T BLOW ITSELF OUT LIKE MOTORHEAD!
Super.
god all mighty that's good. thanks for the post.
Awww yah speeeeeed
Dang Jackie is cooking that banjo
amazing... hey to all bill monroe fans from Australia.
America was an interesting 400 year experiment.
listen to the music... sounds like it really worked out good
not so good. The breed of people that write, perform, and love this music, i.e., the white, Christian, Bible believing men, are treated like shit.
you can't beat that kinda music with a stick nah I don't care what you say!!
0:28 "I'm just gonna leave this here and walk off"
Jackie Phelps is playing two finger style banjo and slaying it! Blows many a Scruggs three finger style players away.
Awesome
Kicks it off like a boss!
"Boy, you can't beat that kinda music with a stick now, I don't care what you say!" well said, Jimmy Dickens.
Saw Bill in Dallas, 1991ish. They started late at a club and Bill was PUNK. He'd walk over and nudge a guy while they played. Oh, and the Dixie Chicks opened for him, but headed to Nashville that week!
Jackie Phelps on two-finger thumb lead banjo...that ain't three finger Scruggs...good stuff...
I love this. I only remember him from Hee Haw. Seeing this older clip is fantastic.
+Oculus: Jackie is playing Guitar/Singing, with Bill,on other Videos. I seen him pick a red gibson at the Ryman, backing Stringbean in 1970.
Ok, I give. Maybe it is Jackie Phelps. I didn't know Jackie played with Bill Monroe. Sorry, I was wrong! You are right. My bad!!
And that right there’s how it’s done. 😊
Jackie phelps on 5 string banjo..not string bean.
Bobby hicks on fiddle
BM the greatest picker of all time!
Anyone know the name of rhe banjo picker, is this Tony Ellis
Jackie Phelps two-finger style. Amazing kind of Bluesy too!
Who was the banjo player this kicks ass
The audience knew something was going on, but not exactly what.
These guys are getting down!!! Does anyone know what year this originally aired on TV?
If anyone else has an opinion on the identity of this banjo player, please feel free to give your opinion. But I still say it is Akeman!
I'm sorry, Donna, but, no, that is most definitely Jackie Phelps on banjo playing the way he did it - TWO finger (not three) but still a "Scruggs-style" sound. I love the fiddle playing, much different from todays rap where you find the clip?
Ernie Newton-bass player.
Throw some more coal in that sucker and hold on!
Because this train is moving fast!
Hahaha
i really don't know, sorry.
That's not Jackie Phelps on banjo. That's David stringbean Akeman. The Kentucky wonder. The one and only!!!
It most certainly is Jackie
Donna, sorry to disappoint you, this is Jackie Phelps. Look at some of the Flatt & Scruggs TV shows to see Stringbean (David Akeman), quite a different look. He was indeed Monroe's first banjo player (before Scruggs) but that was in the WWII years, this clip is from the 1950s
I concur, that's Jackie Phelps, a future star on Hee Haw, slapping his leg when Jimmy Riddle did he eephin'
Donna Wheeler That is incorrect that is not Stringbean on playing the banjo. First String played clawhammer style -- this is two finger picking, and Second and most important this recording is from 1954 and Stringbean was a Bluegrass Boy 10 years earlier, finally Stringbean was taller then Bill.
they just showin off
The banjo player is Rural Yarbrough.
I disagree! He certainly looks like Akeman.
Donna, read Tom Ewing's book on Bill Monroe. He verifies it is Phelps.
