Do You Need to Prep Clay Flower Pots for Paint?

Painting on primed vs not primed terracotta flower pots. Do you need to prep clay pots for painting with gesso? I tried priming only one half of a clay planter, painting on both sides and leaving it outside for 3 months to see, if the paints starts peeling off or cracking.
