What a joy to listen to Tony. Like you I was inspired by Ray Charles playing that Rhodes piano in his shop in The Blues Brothers. I was a couple of years older than you at the time but it spurred me to buy a Rhodes mk2. As a poor student and an aspiring musician it cost me a lot of money and although I held onto it for about 15 years I never found the time or cash to get it professionally serviced or restored.
I sold it to a Rhodes fan who subsequently restored it so I am glad it went to a good home. In fact i saw it online a year ago; tell-tale marks and battlescars identified it as my old piano and it was good to see that it was still being cherished.
Your FX treatment and amplifier set up is beautiful. A treat for my ears especially through headphones. Thanks forsharing how you got such a rich sound.
Your playing is sublime and you have a lovely singing voice. Hopefully you will post a medley of tunes for us to listen to, which I will look out for.
"Keep music live" and keep playing Tony. Best wishes and thanks again for showing how beautiful the Rhodes is as an instrument.
PS I look a bit like you too! There's something about geting older/wider/balder that makes men hark back to their youth and whenever I hear a Rhodes it transports me back 30 years or more...
Beautifull Rhodes sounds brother! And i like your style of playing. I think its Great!
Beautiful sounding Rhodes!!!
absolutely brilliant.. I am considering getting one of those beauties, and I am well aware how dull it can sound if not put through a decent effects chain. Your sound and playing is so spot on. What got me into Rhodes is Jamiroquai, the original band -saw them in 1994’ish for the first time, Michael McDonald, Crusaders, and then Steely Dan..
Man, I wish you sang more, beautiful playing and singing, really enjoyed your video. Loved the way the image shaked as you played, kind of trippy to watch ha ha.
Absolutely beautiful..
Nice Video, I thought I heard a little Ride Like The Wind there for a minute, haha. I'm going to pick up a 1975 rhodes suitcase from my tech that I just got, can't wait to get it and dig in and play it!
Great voice.
Thank you for sharing - it was very impressive! Great instrument, great musician and fantastic voice. Ceep on rolling...
Best sounding Rhodes on the internet I reckon...
Excellent tone, playing and singing !
Congrats! Have a bottle (from the back) on me!
great rig man
Thank you for sharing....MkII here since 25 Years. You are a great Singer my Friend 😎👍
Thanks.. nice of you to say
Amazing Tony. Great playing, tone, vibe - pedals AND singing. You’re THE Rhodes cat. Just got my first Rhodes ever (turning 50 last week) - now starts my pedal search, it seems. Haha….
Find a good tech would be the best first move.
Nice dynamic Rhodes and voice!
Beautiful voice!
That Rhodes sounds really good especially with your guitar boxes and those 2 amps. Really a FAT sound. Super nice instrument you restored there.
lovely
Not sure why this popped up now, sounds amazing though !! Hope you get a chance to post some full songs??
Very nice, Tony. It's amazing that you were able to find anyone to do the restoration. Rhodes technicians are a vanishing breed. And one can hear that your guy did a splendid job with your board. In the beginning of the FRs' product life cycle, you had folks like Herbie Hancock carrying around tools with him because the tines would break. ( Of course someone like Herbie probably put it through its paces giving it a more than fair share of wear ). I have a Casio WK-200 which has general midi preset 430 which is called Electric Piano 1 and preset 27 which is the Dyno EP; they both emulate the tines timbre of an FR. I have loads of fun making believe I'm a junior Herbie Hancock or Larry Dunn
I hear you and unfortunately, Jim has indicated that he is not going to be doing them anymore because he wasn't getting enough work/money to make it worth his while.
wow. crazy good tone here
Greate video
amazing. ...thanks...
I've recently done the full Vintage Vibe restore on my 1975 Rhodes Mk I. Including the bump mods. It does not sound this good. Excellent job, well done! Maybe I need new pickups too...
The amp he is running it through makes a big difference.
Nice video. The only thing is the tines. Not enough mids.
Adorei o timbre!
some Bubbles vibe here
Use two matching amps with a pan/trem pedal, spaced far apart you get a good sound.
very cool'
No one plays keyboards like the generation that grew up on Ray Charles.
Great video. Not enough about MKII Rhodes. My action is sluggish, suggestions on what to check first?
Leveling the keybed should help and changing parts
Does any software come close ?
A Rhodes is just out of budget at the moment
Oh yeah there is, the Keyscape Library from Spectrasonics has the most accurate representation of both a Stage Rhodes Mk1 and a Custom Stage one, apart from 2 wurlitzer models, pianos and a lot of other key instruments, all great, all full of quirks and tons of customization is possible too.
I need to do some catching up on the latest offerings... for me, while the sound is usually pretty ok... the latency (yes very small latency) kills the feel. The new plugins from Rhodes and Universal Audio look interesting... have to have a trial.
Which amp is wet and which is dry?
Typically I keep the bassman dry and the deluxe wet. But it doesn’t matter much. Have tried it both ways.
Not a bad vocal either...
Il suono è in distorsione, molto fastidioso. Rivedi la catena di effetti, troppo guadagno.
Mi dispiace... il distorsione è buono per me.
This video is excellent. I've been watching "no talk" videos, primarily to avoid hearing opinions that lack perspective. You look to be about my age, or man that knows what to say in the least amount of words to get his point across. Your lecture on the instrument is based on knowledge and history. Your playing is fantastic and your voice was an absolutely wonderful surprise. Thank you for this presentation..
