Helpful tip about why self-adhesive papers attract dust because of the static electricity built up by the peeling off of the backing. Spray adhesive all the way for me now!

Nigel Wylie glad to have helped Nigel, there are ways to help reduce the effects of the static but it's not worth the bother when you just want to quickly change abrasives in the workshop! Hope the spray works well for you.

Good walkthrough amigo. I'm gonna have my eye out for a decent piece of glass now!
The sound of that plane to me back to woodwork classes and my dad cabinet making at home.
    Thanks again.

Cheers mate, not much beats the sound of a well honed plane taking shavings!

Hi Lee, Great video mate, I've just been restoring a couple of planes too, I found the Paul Sellers videos quite good.
I have they scary sharp system with PSA backed 3M abrasive and wondered why i kept getting those dust particles.
I shall have to try this idea, so where do you source your abrasive sheet?

Jason Archer cheers Jason, glad you enjoyed it. You can get the wet or dry paper from my website if you like.

Hi Lee, what a great and timely video. I have had a nice piece of 10 mm glass sitting in my shed for a few months now. I got it specifically to restore and maintain a couple of No. 4 planes that I bought on ebay. Would that 3M photo spray work as an adhesive? Also, wouldn't a good stropping paddle work for the final stage if space was limited on the glass? Finally, could you please post the name of the chap that you bought the guide from.

Excellent, glad you found it helpful. Yes spray mount should work fine, probably better in fact as it's designed to go on flat and transparent. The guide is made by Richard Kell and I got mine from my mate Matthew at workshop heaven. It's a really nicely engineered tool and very easy to use. Have fun restoring those no4's I'm hoping to film that process soon in stages with some upgraded parts also from workshop heaven.

Thanks Lee. Can i use the glass and paper to flatten the actual Iron?

Philip Green can't see any reason why not, might want to use some coarser grits if there's more material to remove though.

By the way......... I'm impressed with your choice of intro music. Is that you playing "Soldier's Joy"?

Could you tell me what brand of spray adhesive you used as the 3m mount spray I tried would come unstuck when I put water on the wet & dry.

I've been using a similar set up for some time with good results. Any talk about sharpening will bring out the zealots. I hope they don't beat you up too badly.

RyanJKUS2012 haha, everyone is welcome to their opinion and sharpening is such a personal thing but hard to argue with the results from this simple set up though.
