What's the Difference Between Pliability and Flexibility?

  • Everybody moves differently. Whether you're running up and down the court, carrying groceries to your car, or bending down to pick something up - movement is universal. Whatever movements you’re asking your body to perform, your goal should be to feel your best while doing them.
People today associate movement with the terms #flexibility, #mobility, and #pliability, and it’s common to hear them used interchangeably. Often times, however, people misuse or misunderstand them. Our focus for this video is to educate you on the meanings of each of these terms and shed some light on how these concepts can work together to help achieve the common goal of functional movement.
The end goal for all of us is functional movement. But to be able to move as functionally as possible, you need to understand that pliability acts as the ultimate enabler. It helps to enhance both mobility and flexibility and empowers us to do what we love better and for longer.

Alex is spot on. Mobility refers to our ability to effectively take a joint through a full range of motion without pain or blockage. Some of us have joint mobility restrictions like old injuries, birth defects, scar tissue buildup, prior surgeries, arthritis (aging or wear and tear), etc. Sometimes these restrictions can be addressed using joint mobilization techniques that allow the joint to train into the new range of motion and facilitate motor learning. Some of us have soft tissue restrictions like tight hamstrings or calves or other body parts. Sitting at a desk all day is a big culprit. Sometimes this can be addressed with tissue work (different forms of massage), foam rolling, stretching (dynamic and static), etc. to release tightness and increase blood flow and improve the stretchability of muscles, ligaments, and tendons which can also improve range of motion. Some of us have a combination of both joint restrictions and soft tissue restrictions. Pliability is the understanding that the body is a system and works holistically taking in factors to improve both joint restrictions and soft tissue restrictions but also incorporating proper water intake and a healthy diet and proper rest and recovery to give you the maximum amount of functional movement we can achieve.

This is a very clever marketing scheme. It's as though there trying to present some mystical new approach to training, just by using the word pliability. Functional movement has always been a combination resistance training, flexibility drills, proper diet and rest. There is no magical formula or secret ingredient it solely comes down to consistency and discipline.

There is nothing profound in the TB12 method book. But it’s awesome because a) It’s brady’s method, b) vibrating foam rolling is a new idea, and c) it addresses the GIANT misnomer in sports training which is “just get stronger, and get surgery when injured.” The method is nothing new, and yet what is in life? It’s a great method that a lot of people need.

I had long term covid last year with insane joint pain for for over 8 months. I went to 8-9 different doctors, had over a dozen blood tests, and my C-reactive protein levels were in the hundreds. The only thing that brought inflammation relief was when they finally prescribed steroids, but I wasnt going to live like that long term. When the vaccine came around I was freaked about getting it, but I did it for my kids and about a week after the 2nd shot, much of my pain disappeared. I still had a bit of joint pain though and my C-reactive protein was still very high but had decreased from over 200 down to 60. I decided the only thing to try was to change my diet. I started researching foods that fought inflammation and came across the TB12 method which seemed to address everything that was happening to me. I don’t adhere 100%, but it has changed my life for the better. I’m still not 100% cured, but I feel as close to normal as I have in 2 years. I have no ACLs in either leg, no PSL in my right, and bad damage to tight MCL. I’ve blown out a repaired ACL reconstruction as well. Some of the doctors I saw were convinced that the trauma in those joints had something to do with my long term chronic pain and thought there was no way to fix. I’m about 2-3 months into this and I feel way better. Hope it continues.

I wish I could get my Plantar Faci "however you spell it" to go away. Been trying to stretch out, ice, sleep with a boot on to keep it extended, not doing to much on it, rolling out my feet all the way up to the hip flexers and I can't get it to heal. It was starting to until 5 days ago when it got bad again when I got out of bed without my shoes on. sad man..... sad

Flexibility is muscle movement and pliability is both?

@@lgarcia67 pliability is always something that is active. It has many variables, however like Alex said it has to do with tissue quality, energy cell efficiency and blood flow. All minded towards the optimal state. This will also pay dividends neurologically as the more comfortable and stable you feel with your muscles being this way the more confident and optimal you will move and perform and be less likely to get injured than before !
