Now that I think about it, you could use this to store the smaller extra lego pieces from sets. Just pour them into the garbage bin and dump it into the garbage truck
This is a reasonable set, pretty good looking and very functional. It's very similar in price to the City Recycling Truck from last year, which itself is similar in size to this Technic set, although the Technic set is a little bit larger in each direction.
The axis that connects the rear door with the body 1:35 has 2 round pieces on its left end, but nothing on the right. I made it look symmetrical by using the round elements from the left-over pieces and added them on the right end of the axis.
The grabber arm has a similar operating principle as the robot arm in 8094 Control Center. It does the grab first and then the resistance causes the motion to redirect into lifting the arm.
That mechanism is blatantly copied from the rejected lego ideas garbage truck. Are they purposefully rejecting ideas only to use them later and get out of having to pay the original designer!?
The worst culprit of this imo is the upcoming 42179 Earth and Moon Orbit set. It's clearly based on several rejected Lego ideas submissions and especially JK Brickworth's Orrery which he even managed to get made into an official CaDA set. People used to complain about other brick companies stealing from Lego but increasingly I think the opposite is also true.
Lego sets are in development for ages sometimes. In some cases, a designer might have a have a concept developed for years that sits in their desk before it can be made into a set. It’s possible a Technic designer had been working on this mechanism before the ideas set even hit 10k supporters. It is more likely that they planned to release this set, and when reviewing the ideas project, they rejected it because they already had this set scheduled for release and didn’t want two garbage trucks on the market at once. Plus, toy garbage trucks have been around for decades, so it’s hard to claim originality.
I don’t think the designers stole the idea, but the requirement to get a set to 10k is not that hard anymore. And when you make stuff based off of the same thing than similarities are bound to happen. I can almost guarantee that the Idea designer was not the first to think of the mechanism
im fully in favor of the father and son lego ideas garbage truck being inspired, in fact the 4th bricklink creators program is opening up this month and im hearing that the garbage truck is going to be submitted. we still may be able to get the father son garbage truck!
I bought it to compare with the moc I completed of the garbage truck with side loading mechanism based on what I could determine from the Levi/Scott Hasse design. Scott Hasse was even kind enough to comment on my how-to video noting my design was very close to theirs. I can see already this mechanism is quite different actually but gets the job done. You mentioned the stickers but I was hoping you'd address the glaring issue of the front Mack sticker placement. There is that lengthy but small-in-width depression that the sticker goes right over. It looks like you were able to push yours into that depression, I'm just concerned how long it will stay flat.
Lego has made a multitude of garbage trucks, but never with this type of mechanism. Until after a fan showed them how to do it, and that people wanted something like it. The Ideas ‘Automated Garbage Truck” was submitted over 3.5 years ago. It’s disingenuous to say that this model doesn’t owe something to that original design. Now, there is, quite literally, nothing wrong with them doing something like this. They do own all ideas that are submitted, and can use them however they want. However, we shouldn’t gloss over that behavior. Lego *should* have acknowledged the original fan design, whether they “needed” to or not, without giving the successful Ideas payment…. it just would have been nice of them.
This reminds me of the older technic sets in how it's mostly about function again!
the grabber for the bin reminds me of one entry in lego ideas
A MOC made a while ago with this same mechanism was pretty awesome.
Now that I think about it, you could use this to store the smaller extra lego pieces from sets. Just pour them into the garbage bin and dump it into the garbage truck
Imma be honest the thing I look forward to most nowadays with new Lego waves is new jang reviews
I absolutely love the background music ! You’ve had that for years and I’m glad you still have it !
The mechanism to grab the bin is very neat. Had been considering this set already because the child Tonka lover in me still likes big trucks.
I do like the Super Mario Toad/Mushroom Cap's being used for the recycling containers in this set.

It's not minifigure scale but close enough that this would fit in well in a Lego city, however I would modify the cab to be made from system parts.

This is so cool. I don't usually geek over technic. But this is really awesome
Great interesting model with a lot play features Pretty realistic look and all of that at a affordable price Definitely goes to my shopping cart 👍
My Mom got me this set for easter, I Love it.
I'd say just replace the little 2 stud liftarm with the thin version and a bushing and it won't be touching that tile at all.
what a beast , tought this was a lego idea set but made out of lego
This set looks really cool. I like all of the features
2023 was an amazing year for technic, hopefully 2024 will be as well!

If that truly is the case, I wouldn't be surprised

Thats what I thought of as soon as I saw this set, bruh

So, there's a LEGO City and Technic version of this type of truck. Very interesting.
nice to see a reasonably priced lego set

another great review - Will be picking this one up as well. Like all the moving sections.
It could be converted to an overland armored vehicle. But it would need to be raised a bit.

I’ve never bought a technic set but this one is pretty cheap so I’ll get it
So they rejected the ideas submission only to copy the grabber mechanism? Thats a bit dirty from lego
I got this and decided to see how much you could fit inside the back and let me tell ya, there is a ton of space
Nice review, just picked one up!
$30 Canadian at Costco
Not a bad set at all! Aside from that tile coming loose, but I’m sure there’s a fix for that.
Great design
Why did they have to make the electric version of the truck instead of the normal one?
Is it just me, or does this give off Hess Truck vibes?
Agreed 100%. Everyone hates stickers. Great reviews like aways Mr Jang.
Great set but it clearly copied the ideas set from a few years ago
Interesting
Why is lego paying for pointless licenses? Just make a generic garbage truck and save money!
Sigh... No functional packer blade. Lego can't make an accurate garbage truck.
