I get it; thanks! To clarify for other readers: If the mouse and dongle/receiver are paired by 'unifying' (both have an orange symbol) one needs to just buy another unifying dongle/receiver of the same make. But if neither had an orange symbol (non unifying), then there is no solution except the trash can.

@@SWExDeKu1454 Microsoft dongles are factory locked into their respective devices. If the dongle is lost, you're gonna have to purchase another wireless set of keyboard/mouse/both.
Use Logitech instead. You can easily replace a lost dongle, just use their software. Also, better battery life and more bang for your buck. Microsoft peripherals are good but terribly overrated and overpriced.
People usually gives long lesson for a 3 second solution.

I have a wireless KB lost dongle but still able to connect to my laptop via Bluetooth, no USB needed? Turn on laptop BT and discover device and connect. If your laptop does not have BT capability which is very rare these days then just buy a BT adapter!
