I attended Billy Graham's crusade in San Jose, California, about 1980. One of the things that impressed me most was that he encouraged people to get involved in their local churches (as I already was), rather than trying to gain followers of and donors to his own ministry, the way most television preachers seem to do. Those who criticize him for getting chummy with politicians *may* have a point, but I think it's unfair to lump him in with the majority of televangelists on money issues.
+Neil Midkiff The important thing is that it didn't matter which party the President of the United States belonged to. Graham ministered to all of them during his time and when he was too infirm to travel, they sought him. No one is perfect and he made some missteps along the way, but generally was quick to realize them and apologize for them. As far as dealing with the general public, he was looking to make followers of the Lord, not of himself. That's not the MO of a charlatan or huckster.
Neil, I am not a fan of the TV preachers you refer to. But, there is most likely a difference. Most of the TV preachers i see today are pastors of a church. Therefore, followers are welcome. Graham was an evangelist. You pass converts on to local churches so they can grow. Different ministries.
Neil Midkiff - I think that it is difficult to speak of or think of religious personages getting involved in politics. The founders of our country tried to put in place policies to protect us from intrusion into politics by religious leaders. Billy Graham should have known better but at least he refrained from using his renown to advance himself monetarily. How different are things these days. Our country was settled in its earliest history by people trying to escape from religious tyranny. I don't speak pejoratively about religion. It may well be a basic human drive to learn the answers to the deepest and most terrifying questions we have. But the answers some of us have come up with should not be imposed as policy on us as a society. Let each person find his or her own way.
@@shirleyrombough8173 You have a different understanding about the Founders than what I get from my reading. The First Amendment limits the federal government, not religious personages: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." We can't have a national church; elsewhere, the constitution says that there can be no religious test as a qualification for public office. Those are good limits on government. But the concept that everyone in government must act as if they were atheist, or that every professed believer must stay silent about politics, is not supported by history; it goes against the "free exercise" clause.
He was not the first preacher to appear consistently on television, but he understood how to use TV better than any of the preachers of his time. He appeared one night on "What's My Line?" -- and generated a couple of great spontaneous lines from young comic Joey Bishop. It is interesting to see the response he got from the New York sophisticates of late night CBS TV. The very Catholic Dorothy Kilgallen did not stand up for him as she did years before for the first great TV preacher Father Fulton J Sheen. [Kilgallen asked all mystery guests that first question of hers in late 1960 in an effort to get Casey Stengl if he ever appeared. oh bru uther] This is quite typical of his crusade style -- he was not afraid to go into lions dens.. Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success IN MEMORIAM -- William Franklin Graham, Junior "REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM"
@@pricegrisham2998 NOT if you believe what catholic church preaches, I was catholic 40 years. Let me say even Satan knows who Jesus is and quoted scripture to Jesus. IT IS BETWEEN YOU AND JESUS, JESUS plus nothing. if a catholic gets saved they will eventually leave the CC.
The thing I find interesting, in Rev. Graham's story, is that this was in a period of comparative laxness; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, thus ensuring no contact between the Germanies, and one had to smuggle Bibles into the then-Soviet Union, up through the early 90s. So he was there at a fortuitous time.

@@johndonahue3162 The Bible is clear time and again that God has the ability to save human life and prevent suffering. As we speak there are children in the world being raped, starving to death, dying of excruciatingly painful disease, etc, but God looks on and does not help. You know this is happening. The Bible is clear that God is able to help. This only means that He chooses not to, for whatever reason. And that says everything about Him(if he existed) The Bible is clear that God knows the future. This means that God knew before He created Satan that Satan would rebel, cause carnal nature, misery and sin on the Earth, and that the majority of human history would be that of suffering, including eternal punishment in Hell of the vast majority of humans, and necessitate the death of God's son Jesus as atonement for sin. God knew all of this before-hand, yet he went ahead and created Satan and humans anyway knowing before-hand what would happen. Your great, great, great, great uneducated grandparents believed the Christ-myth and their children through the decades have felt compelled to believe it also because it is your heritage and way of life, just as if you had been born into Buddhism, Shintoism, Anamism, Islam or any other cultural heritage and belief system, all of them created by humans, like your Christ-myth. @@krystonjones You're probably thinking that any evangelist must be in the business for personal profit, and sadly many are. Graham was one of the few I really could respect, because on his crusades he worked with local churches and encouraged his hearers to get involved with churches in their community. He didn't try to build up a following for himself of donors, as so many televangelists do.
"If somebody would please revive my mother and father..." Joey Bishop said that because he was JEWISH. Billy Graham is now 95 years old. What a story about his crusade in Germany.
Especially since his crusade was before the Berlin wall was built keeping the East Berliners inside the communist district. Thankfully, I lived long enough to also see that wall torn down in November, 1989.

I like Dorothy Kilgallen's question regarding if he has ever been trained in Dentistry. This is something of which has my goat. God is VERY angry that there is not a proper Dentist to be found in this world.
As another poster has stated much more eloquently than I, it is a shame both actors, performers & public folks are no longer as polite and dignified as they once were. It is a REAL shame, and makes me long for the more "innocent" days. An utter shame !!
I note that Anthony Quinn's co-star in "Becket" was, as John Daly pointed out, Sir Laurence Olivier, who played the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas à Becket, opposite Quinn's King Henry II. I was intrigued to find out that the play was written in French by Jean Anouilh and premiered in 1959 as "Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu" in Paris on Oct. 8, 1959. It premiered in English translation a year later on Broadway on Oct. 5, 1960, just four days before this episode of WML aired. The Broadway production won four Tony awards and during its extended production, at one point during its run, Quinn and Olivier switched roles so that Quinn played the assassinated Archbishop and Olivier played the King. I wish I'd seen the play back then -- and I wish I'd seen it twice to see the roles played both ways, had I been old enough in 1960 to appreciate it. As many know, there was a film adaptation of "Becket" in 1964 starring Richard Burton as the Archbishop and Peter O'Toole as the King. I've never seen it, but now I think I need to.
You have the story slightly wrong: Quinn and Olivier starred on B'way in BECKETT for six months. It then closed and went on tour with Olivier playing Quinn's role opposite Arthur Kennedy, who took over Olivier's original role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)
I had to laugh at John Daly's response to Dorothy's question about a serving of a small pork sausage [that she would have a hard time keeping her friends if she didn't serve more than a small pork sausage--or words to that effect].
I wonder how this show would work in 2022. I fear they could ruin it in trying to update it with today's lack of civility. I really don't want to see that happen.
Apparently, celebrities only went to New York if they were there for another reason such as a new movie being premiered or work being done. That Dorothy Kilgallen has the inside scoop on all that is going on on Broadway so she has an inside track.
Mother Theresa? Who denied her patients pain medication so that they could "suffer with Jesus"? All she did was maintain warehouses for the dying and write letters trying to get crooks like Charles Keating off for their criminal activities, because Keating had given her some of the stolen loot. Of course, when Mother Theresa needed medical care, she got into a jet and traveled to the Mayo Clinic.
For the record, Edgar Buchannan was another celebrity that not only studied dentistry, but actually had a practice in Oregon and Altadena CA before giving it up to become a full time actor in the 1940s.
The 10/2/60 episode is rumored to exist in a private collection. Panel was Dorothy Kilgallen, Steve Allen, Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf, and the mystery guests were Kirk Douglas and Mickey Rooney.
Actually, Douglas wasn't on as a mystery guest on that show, he was there because of a sideline occupation of his, "Sells electric blankets for horses." The program may have been destroyed in 1975 when Gil Fates was putting together the anniversary special because he wanted to use the clip of Douglas from that show but as he wrote, "Douglas remembered the spot, AND HATED IT!". Given how other shows were mishandled when putting that special together (the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis one from 1954) I suspect that's what happened there.
dgoldg It always amazes me when watching this show when they talk about "new" shows, books, songs, films, etc. that have by now been considered classics for many years. It's hard to imagine a time when "Green Eggs and Ham" wasn't well-known by every child and adult in America! Arlene even mispronounced Dr. Seuss's name here, and she's usually good about pronunciations. I had a similar reaction to the episode with Julie Andrews from February, 1960, when she honestly answered "no" to the question of whether she'd ever been in motion pictures.
SaveThe TPC She actually pronounced "Seuss" closer to the correct form than you might think. The vowel pair isn't supposed to be pronounced as one would pronounce "oo", but more like "oi". Ted Geisel's lineage was Germanic, after all.
+Adolfo Leon Jerry Lewis is also still alive, as well as Sophia Loren, Jayne Fonda, etc Just an observation; Dorothy stood up to shake hands with Bishop Sheen, but she remained seated for Rev. Graham.

His ministry was completely transparent regarding money. His books were always open.
Billy Graham was one of the few preachers that I have respect for ❤️
When Billy Graham preached the Gospel there was no doubt he believed every word he said. He was the real McCoy..
Being rather handsome with movie star qualities people will be drawn to him rather than the bible!
@@angloaust1575 as long as they now believe,
He was not the first preacher to appear consistently on television, but he understood how to use TV better than any of the preachers of his time. Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success

IT IS BETWEEN YOU AND JESUS, JESUS plus nothing. if a catholic gets saved they will eventually leave the CC.
AS I SAID JESUS said ''You must be Born Again'' .
This must be the first appearance on tv that I've seen of Anthony Quinn, what a great man!
Anthony Quinn! that man was more than just an actor: he was a great experience
Not ALL TV Pastors were bad!. Billy Graham was probably the best! but there are others as well
My favorite evangelist/prophet (whatever she is) is Kat Kerr!! I LOVE Kat Kerr!
How sad that we will never know great performances on stage such as Quinn in Beckett. They are gone forever.
Joey Bishop appeared deeply touched by Billy Graham's appearance on the show.
Yes he did. I noticed that.
@Billy Batson How anyone can like such a total conman is beyond me.
@@ShadowReubenKee Well said, Wanderer. Very well said. Sadly that same televangelist con game is still alive and well today.
You have a good brain. Time to think for yourself. "When you were a child you thought like a child. Now that you are a man you must put away childish ways." Apostle Paul and Sosthenes.

Thank you for sharing. I never heard the story about Billy Graham being in Berlin. Wow what a story!!
Glad you enjoyed it.

To my mind, Anthony Quinn was one of the top ten greatest American dramatic actors. He was an incredibly talented and versatile individual, who dominated the screen by his presence.

Just Amazing the Work you've done in Jesus Name Dear Reverend Billy
My invisible friends told me the dish ran away with the spoon.
Yes he was one of God's true hearts.
Everyone should watch how Mr Daly makes sure everyone is shown respect. Those who are asking or answering questions. He makes sure that no one is disrespected in anyway. He shows respect & kindness to EVERYONE !!! " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you " !
"Shirtless" should take note!
Yes, that's one reason I like these videos so much. So much fun yet no disrespect to anyone.
So refreshing to see and hear John Daly speak of God when talking with Billy Graham. RIP Mr. Graham, we lost you only a day or two ago. I'm sure you heard "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Rev Billy's Son, Franklin looks just like him
Tony Quin was a very sexy looking guy and a hell of an actor.
So was one of his sons, Francesco Daniele Quinn, who died @ 48 in 2011. Suspected heart attack.
Anthony Quinn just kept getting better and better looking as he grew older! And what a voice!
I'm sure Tony made many women swoon. He fathered 10 children, the last was born when Quinn was 81. Not a typo--- eighty-one.
Graham to (Jewish) Joey Bishop, "I think you'd make a very good Bishop." Joey Bishop says "Now if someone could just revive my mother and father."
Now if someone will please revive my mother and father.”😂 He had such droll, deadpan sense of humor. 😂
Joey Bishop’s real name was Joseph Abraham Gottlieb! ☺️♥️
Dr. Billy Graham-RIP. A life of faithful service now rewarded.
Dr. Graham could have been a movie star, had the looks for it.
Billy Graham - non profit???? ha ha ha a lifetime of fleecing now ended
Next week Billy Graham would have been 100. RIP Billy Graham.
Government puppet
"If somebody would please revive my mother and father..." Joey Bishop said that because he was JEWISH. Billy Graham is now 95 years old. What a story about his crusade in Germany.
I loved hearing about his crusade.

Quinn was excellent as Zorba the Greek.
I love Mr. Quinn: the man had SOUL
I grew up with those Dr Seuss books in the 60s! I was only about 8 days away from being born!
It then closed and went on tour with Olivier playing Quinn's role opposite Arthur Kennedy, who took over Olivier's original
role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and
audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)
ToddSF 94109 - I did see it and learned so much history seeing it. Also the performances were really earth shattering.
Once seen Anthony Quinn coming out of a book store in Flushing Queens, NY..
He had an ironclad policy to never be alone with a female. I always admired him for that.
Anthony Quinn is my all-time favourite actor. My idol.
I now live in Charlotte North Carolina just a few miles from the Billy Graham library and museum. Love it.✝️
I had to laugh at John Daly's response to Dorothy's question about a serving of a small pork sausage [that she would have a hard time keeping her friends if she didn't serve more than a small pork sausage--or words to that effect].
Love love love this show. Please please please please bring the game concept back. It’s so funny & its a great game to watch with the family.
I wonder how this show would work in 2022. I fear they could ruin it in trying to update it with today's lack of civility. I really don't want to see that happen.
Oh yeah, I could see the occupations in the current day: "condom tester", "dildo maker", "TikTok twerker."

What a respectfulness in this show, a classical icon figure, love this show, which we have more like this today.
Omg green eggs and ham was a new book!
Arlene's introduction could be nominated as most funny intro of Bennett. Ham indeed.

Wow...I grew up reading Cat in the hat AND green eggs and ham. Pleasant memories indeed.
Anthony Quinn-spoke English, Spanish, Italian and French. :)
Apparently, celebrities only went to New York if they were there for another reason such as a new movie being premiered or work being done. That Dorothy Kilgallen has the inside scoop on all that is going on on Broadway so she has an inside track.

Anthony Quinn in “Lawrence of Arabia:” “I am a river to my people!” One of my favorite deliveries of a line ever!
"Thy mother mated with a scorpion!"
I agree. It's a great line and the entire performance was Oscar worthy.
Wonderful to see Billy Graham on this; one of the finest godly human beings next to Mother Theresa and M.Ghandi who ever lived. Tk you for posting.

Thanks - because they were mentioning in the previous episode that Steve Allen would return, I was noticing and wondering why that one was missing.
Green Eggs and Ham! Yeah, I think I've heard of that book! LOL!
dgoldg
It always amazes me when watching this show when they talk about "new" shows, books, songs, films, etc. that have by now been considered classics for many years.
Billy Graham was always a friend of the world ..sad
