Distinguishing between the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatments for SIADH vs diabetes insipidus is important for nursing students to master before exams and the NCLEX.
This video explains the difference in pathophysiology behind SIADH, caused by inappropriate ADH secretion, versus diabetes insipidus, caused by insufficient ADH. Key differences covered include serum sodium, serum osmolality, urine output, and treatment approaches for both hydraulic imbalances. Understanding when to restrict fluids versus administering desmopressin or stimulating ADH is critical for providing appropriate patient care. Reviewing the major characteristics that differentiate SIADH and diabetes insipidus will prepare you to correctly answer questions about these disorders on nursing school tests and the licensure exam.

Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you ever tried - Patlarny Sweet Days Principle (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for getting rid of diabetes minus the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my buddy after many years got cool success with it.
@@gsusmakama Since nursing is a science field that is evidence based, if there was a "cure" for diabetes, it would be well researched and would be found in NIH or journals not in a "google search".

@@SimpleNursing thank you so much for the reply
A way I like to remember is use the number of letters in the name:
SIADH = lots of letters = lots of ADH = lots of water
DI = less letters = less ADH = less water
Thankssss
that’s good! thanks
God bless you
Perfect
And low sodium for both
For the last question you said further education would be needed for a patient that says "this drug is used to decrease my frequent urination," but I think that is a correct statement.
I watched this video b4 my nclex. Everything he said it will be on Nclex it was in my Nclex. Thanks Mike.
omg PERFECT!!! we did a lot of hard work looking at over 10,000 NCLEX questions to make SURE we cover ONLY the top tested topics! Glad you PASSED THE 1st TIME!!!

Thanks Mike for the video. I was having problems with hyponatremia and hypernatremia. Understanding more about SIDH and DI helped me with the interventions, signs and symptoms.
Mike you are awesome !!!!!! Have seem almost all your videos each almost 4-5 times , they play on repeat when I’m driving , cooking etc On my test day it felt like I was replaying all the videos and all I kept hearing was “guys don’t let the NClex trick you” 😩😂 75 questions your girl was done and PASSED!! You have a best friend you don’t even know ☝️ thanks 🙏
I PASSED MY NCLEX ON 6/21/2022 with 75 questions I felt overprepared because my nursing school exams was way harder than NCLEX. Simple nursing helped me ALOT I was listening to simple nursing vids right before my exam. I prayed that I dnt get EKG strip but I got one and the answer was obvious. I did ALL uworld questions TWICE, did ALL archer questions 1.5times, did Saunders 7th edition practice exam questions did most questions while in nursing school, listened to ALL Mark Klimek vids, listened to all of summit college vids on UA-cam, my school was having me doing 300 practice questions a day😒 GOODLUCK I Hope this helped someone. SIMPLE nursing will help you with ATI,HESI and NCLEX. The truth is tht all the practice questions will prepare you for NCLEX but when u sit there u will def need fundamental knowledge and application the exam is not hard but you have to know what everybody else knows

Nurse Mike thank you soooo much for these videos!!! I just past my last exam for med surge 1 because of you and your team. THANK YOU!
1,4,6 correct answers
2 doesn’t need further education bc desmopressin holds water when taking it, so increase risk of fluid overload.
Lots of love and many thanks to the entire simple nursing team to help to pass my nclex..............you guys are amazing.
I love the way Sir Mike teaching.. I recommend it to my friend who took the exam and he passed the NCLEX. He did self study watching simple nursing and finished the exam for less than 1 hour, 75 items. ☺️

Thanks to your videos I passed my NCLEX,I got a question on Siadh,
Listen!!! I drew these diagrams out in NCLEX EXAM ! Your videos have helped me when I was in Uni up to taking Nclex. You are amazing Teacher 👏❤️thank you
told myself that I would come back and write to you if I pass and now that I did!!!! here's what I think! I know a lot of people have claimed that they have been listening to your lectures for days or weeks and learn a lot. however, I stumbled upon your videos while watching LevelUp Rn and listened to your few videos (heart failure, fluids, siadh/di..and a few more). I loved that your videos were short and to the point. My nclex seemed easy because of you and I thought I was failing because I didn't think the questions were getting hard. I realized that that I understood the concept because of your vids and was able to fly thru even with those hard questions!!! Though I was on uworld daily for a good 2 weeks, I felt like I learned more from you than my 4 years of NU school. so Thank you for being you Mike!!!!

For the last question, I am kind of confused, I thought the 2 option needed further teaching (DI pt shouldn't restrict fluids) while the 3rd option was correct (so no further teaching is required) since the pt had DI @simple Nursing
you're correct.
thought so too
I love your videos .Thank you for simplicity

Thank you, Nurse Mike, love your videos. I am taking my NCLEX in 9 days! I really enjoy the videos and they are really easy to remember. I have a quick question at the end of the video 15:24 minutes the question about Desmorpressin choice 2 is not right either and we don't need to restrict our fluids since the pt is losing water and they will be dehydrated. we encourage them to drink plenty of fluids. Just wanted to make sure I am not missing anything. Thank you again!!
Thank you, That threw me off too. I was looking in the comments to see if there is some correction.
how was your exam?
ya think he accidentally missed it!
Yep option number 2 is a little bit confusing. In the question it didn't say if it is SIADH or DI but in the option No. 4 it is indicated that it is SIADH. It means if it is SIADH he need to restrict his water intake bcoz of the water retention.
@@montecarlocreencia1343 but it said the pt was starting on desmopressin , so that indicated that they have DI not SIADH we do not want to stop fluid output on pts with SIADH since they already have so much. The patient definitely has DI because we want him to stop urinating as much to avoid being dehydrated with an increase of sodium.
These videos are a game changer. Thank you for the visuals and excellent explanations.

For the last question on desmopressin, isn’t option number three (3) excepted because the drug helps to retain fluid? This means the client don’t need further teaching right?
I noticed that as well! 😅
that got me a bit confused as well
@@alexacaban6815 glad I’m not the only one 😅
Probably a typo which is why it's blurred
Number 3 shouldn't be checked because the question is asking what statements would need further teaching.

@@SimpleNursing So what is the answer to that question? yes or no further education?
@@bodonap02 The answer is that they need further education if they believe they need to restrict their water intake. Patients with DI are extremely dehydrated and their output can often be greater than their input. You want to make sure they have access to fluids at all times unless contraindicated and that you are recording their I&O and daily weight.
Water intake needs to be restricted while taking Desmopressin because your body is beginning to retain fluids and if you continue drinking water like you did before getting the Desmopressin, you are at risk for fluid overload.
Holly and Lauren who is (NCLEX) right. I see both of your points. The client is dehydrated so fluids are needed. However, the drug can cause fluid overload. So would the most correct answer be that fluids should be monitored and adjusted as needed based on I/O's? Thanks

Wouldn't the answer to the last question be 1,2,4,6?
Yeah, I think so too
Yes, he should not have checked #3, and he skipped #2 but they would want to drink water since they are "dry inside."
that's what I thought. Thank God you caught that too.
I thought that too
My exact thinking @ Bullsforever, since it depress urine output( is not the same as decrease frequency of urination?) & increases BP. Pls more clarification, thanks @ Mike

For the select all that apply for desmopressin isn't # 2 incorrect?
I was thinking the same thing cuz if you have di and need desmopressin to treat it why would you restrict fluid intake?
@@boomboom04201 I believe it is because the patient is urinating and losing all of the water they are taking in. If they continue to take in the fluid, it will just continue this issue.
I thought this at first too. But if you think about it, during DI, you are drinking a lot of water because you are losing so much from the lack of ADH. When you start taking desmopressin, you are gaining that ADH which means your body is going to start retaining fluids. It is important to restrict your fluid intake while taking the medication to prevent fluid overload.

Thank You Mike... You explain things so well. But I have a question about the last Question regarding desmopressin.
#1 Why is number one correct? I thought the desmopressin causes Headache because it decreases the Na.
#2 - I thought number 2 was correct cause why would the client want to restrict the water intake if they need it? is it because of what the drug does which is to hold the water in?
Thank You!

In the last question about Desmopressin Nasal Spray, does restricting water intake not require further teaching? I'm confused.
Great vid. However I think the last slide should be fixed, since desmopressin decreases urinary frequency and the question is about the client needing further education.
Omg thank you for mentioning this. I thought I was going crazy lol. I kept replaying the beginning of the video to see if I missed something. #3 is not a need for further education because it is correct. Its used for DI to retain fluids and decrease output. Should not have been selected.
Isn't Demeclocycline the drug of choice for SIADH? Great video btw! This helped me grasp the concepts easier.
For SIADH won't the client remain euvolemic?? Meaning they won't have HTN??
You just mistakenly checked option no. 3 on your last question right? because the question says NEEDS FURTHER TEACHING.😮
i noticed this too
Wondering this as well!
I am wondering the same ? number 3 is not completely right
Noticed that too
He DIDN’T CHECK #3 obviously coz that’s correct.
You don’t restrict your water intake on desmopressin right?
more free lectures 😊 thank you.
Hi Mike! I'm a nursing professor with students who been love your videos so I am offering the following feedback wrapped in kudos for the great job you all at Simple Nursing are doing:
At 15:05 if option # 3 "This drug is used to decrease my frequent urination" is a true statement then it should Not be selected as one of the correct answers because the question is interested in statements that indicate a need for further education. Please fact check me.
Also, option # 2 "I will make sure to restrict my fluid intake" should be selected as one of the correct answers because there is no need to restrict fluid intake in patients with DI who have been prescribed desmopressin. Please fact check me.
Blessings
You are right! I found this odd too. In the video that is not the question he reads tho.
I think there is need to restrict fluid intake. He is already on desmopressin which is now helping to retain fluid, adding more fluid will cause more harm. So that answer doesn't need further education.
@@odunzejoy3719 They are not to decrease fluids but they do not need excessive fluids. They are dehydrated so are in need of fluids when on desmopressin.
thats why i confused
option 2 and option 3
Thank you. I learned a lot :)
