Honestly, I don't think this film wouldn't have worked as well if not for McAvoy's stellar performance. Just as the movie transitions from mundane mediocrity to madness and mayhem, he goes from the high-anxiety last person you'd ever expect to the cold apex predator and he does it so well.

I think this movie could very easily have been set in the same universe as the Matrix - just the characters didn’t know the reason why they could bend reality, bullets, etc
No it wasn't very common in Bollywood, only after some time, it became so common. If you still believe in Bollywood always making these kinds of movies, then I suggest you watch action movies like Lakshya, 1971, SRK's Don, etc.
