“Dumb Fun” Isn’t Enough for me…

- This movie has been categorized by many as “dumb fun,” which in my opinion meant the creative team found a way around putting in any effort.
Movies like Guardians of the Galaxy used to be classified as “dumb fun” but it was also a good movie. It’s time to stop using it as a crutch and go back to making good movies. Please Hollywood, go back to the before times…

It seems most of us are actually in agreement:
Monster stuff: Good✅
Human Stuff: Bad❌
For some reason a lot you guys think I hate this movie when that’s not the case. I state very clearly that it has some pretty enjoyable moments. I just feel they could’ve put more effort into making it special. Also keep in mind I’m not a traditional “Godzilla movie fan,” I’m a regular movie fan. And overall, I’m just not a fan of lazy storytelling. That’s my only real issue with the movie.

Can we please accept that there’s a serious dark and gritty Godzilla movie and an action packed cheesy dumb fun Godzilla movie?
We sure can! That being said, I still hope they make improvements in the future. I don’t have a problem with dumb fun, I just don’t like lazy storytelling.
I like dumb fun, and gxk the new empire have alot of those, this movie remain of Showa era ngl.

if Godzilla minus one came out later than this movie you wouldn't have made this video. I hate how everyone measures every monsterverse movie up to minus one. you can't really put it up against the MV. minus 1 was a one-off movie made for a different audience, while the MV is a 10 year old cinematic universe already. it needs to have a different style to attract people for a long time and to consistently have profits to justify a sequel.
minus one took a huge gamble. and it paid off. luckily. they did not know if it would succeed or not. and they did not even put that much money on the line. and they were a japanese exclusive release at first but because it was so successful they released it to the west and it blew up. minus one is the "palworld" of movies
but when your bugets are 10x that amount you want to make a profit. you want to justify the cost for the returns
If Minus One came out after this I probably would’ve compared it to Godzilla (2014), or to King Kong (2005), or Pacific Rim (whatever year pacific rim came out).
then this begs the question which is obvious: why are we comparing a fun/goofy entry of the MV to the seriousness of minus one? it is like comparing the Godfather to Lethal weapon.

First of all, yes. I am riding the current content wave😅. Secondly, at the end of the day they’re all monster movies, why can’t we compare them? Also I don’t understand, I literally said there are good monster moments in the movie and that I understand people like it, but just because I think there should be a LITTLE BIT of good writing, it’s too much.

Very true. I’m not saying they need to do the same things, but in my opinion there should be at least one human character to root for and care about.
This whole movie is just meant for people to turn their brains off and just watch kaiju hitting each other. You can’t go into this movie expecting good story telling and character development. It is just meant to be fun. Minus one and gxk have two completely different forms of entertainment so comparing them is a little dumb
I mean there are many moments in Guardians of the Galaxy I consider to be dumb fun, but because I care about the characters everything is enhanced. Heck, even fast and furious, which is probably the dumbest franchise on earth right now, has more stakes than this movie. It’s not a bad thing to have a little investment in characters, even if it’s minimal.
@@SaceStation guardians of the galaxy was meant to be emotional as it was the final guardians of the galaxy. Fast and furious having somewhat interesting characters doesn’t bring down the Monsterverse movies it just increases the quality of the fast furious universe. Sometimes a movie can be 1000% dumb but if you watch it expecting that (which u should cuz the trailers will tell you) you will enjoy it just as much as watching a emotional developed film
I can respect that, and like I said this movie CAN be enjoyed. It’s just not my cup of tea is all.

@@SaceStation Eh, the 1962 movie had the silly plot of a dude trying to juice up Kong in some kinda of island juice for monetary gain. It was pretty silly all things considered.

@@SaceStation Plus, it gave Kong electric powers out of nowhere and ended with the two kaijus fighting their way doen Mount Fuji, wrecking up tourist destinations along the way til they tumble into the ocean where it ends on a draw.
The human element of that movie boils down to a satirical take on capitalism, just dialed up to 11 with the monster attacks and action

When people say 'dumb fun 'that means people cant get their head around or except stuff in movies that doesn't make sense to them because they think everything needs to be grounded in reality or be like The Shawshank Redemption. I had blast with GxK , off to see it again later.
Here's the thing about this movie
If we compare this movie to lets say Minus One, both movies have entirely different approaches. Minus One prioritizes having an entertaining human story that revolves around Godzilla.
Meanwhile GxKprioritizes on making the monsters as characters (In this case Kong) and the world building involving them, it's why in this film Kong is the main character, as we follow him in his journey exploring more of the hollow earth for a lot of the film, it's like watching Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal as a movie. While the human cast doesn't get a lot of effort since they support the story of the monsters, or support the main character. They aren't the best I'll say, at least they're better than the last film.
I'd say Kong has been done well as the protagonist, he's pretty good. It's sad that there's people who don't see him as such and only critique the human cast, leaving him out when he's the most important character.
This is why people don't like seeing this movie being compared to Minus One, since these are very different films, especially when it comes to comparing the main characters Kong and Kōichi.
This movie isn't a bad movie, obviously nowhere near Madame Web. Personally I'd give it around an 7 or 8, one of the more entertaining entries so far. I'd like to see a bit more effort in the human characters next time, but nowhere near to 2014 where it barely felt like a Godzilla film. That movie is the reason why audiences have been asking for more monster involvement.

Idk about you but I remember a time in which we just went watch a movie and had a good time with it, not seeking “legit” critical opinion that determines what my own opinion will be before watching a movie myself.
Movies are not MEANT to feel real. So you’re telling me you’re going to the movies to watch movies that are realistic? Nah nah nah some movies that’s ok, but other movies aren’t meant to feel realistic, so just imagine being bounded by the law of physics and reality, I would go see that movie because I can’t see it in real life, but I can see it happening on a massive screen. Not all movies have to feel real. This movies intent wasn’t to feel real bro.
When I say “real” I don’t mean “realistic.” What I mean is when I’m watching a movie, it should suck me in and make me forget I’m watching a movie. I just couldn’t get drawn in to what was happening in this movie because it felt so disingenuous.

From my perspective of things. It wasn't the best thing I've seen. It definitely was a stepdown from GvK, but I did personally enjoy the action sequences. While yes, I do wish that they did keep in scale for these monsters, at the same time I feel like it would've ruined the fast paced battles that they were trying to go for. This film was trying to be a modern day take on a Showa film, which I respect it for.
That’s a good take on it. And honestly I don’t really mind the scale differences. Really my biggest issue is everything apart from the monsters. The humans and the lackluster script.
Let dumb fun be dumb fun. You have Godzilla Minus 1. Watch that instead
When I went into GxK, the only thing I was wanting is giant monster fights. I understand where you’re coming from but comparing Minus One and The New Empire is comparing different things.
Toho creates the serious movies while Legendary creates the nonsensical movies. The MonsterVerse is really leaning towards the Showa era which I think is fine but I do see why people would not like it.
Just always remember, the MonsterVerse still has more logic then the Showa era.
Yeah for sure, if you just want monster fights then this movie can do the trick. For me personally I just like to have something to get me to care.
See I don’t agree with this. Godzilla 2014, what started the MV, was not nonsensical. It was dark and at least made an effort to have heart. Nonsensical campiness is what MV became when it became obvious that the writers were just terrible at their jobs.
Im shocked at how many critics didnt get GxK . This film was superb in so many ways. The fact the humans were literally narrating the movie cause the monsters are the stars yet the crtics call it dumb exposition proves my point. GxK is a swift, fun ,action packed film with a lot of heart and great example how modern movies should be made.

I think this is why people appreciate kotm as time goes on, the impact of the titans on the environment is huge, and their scale is truly showcased. The first skar king fight, i felt like i could get up and fight skar king. The Titans dont feel like Titans anymore. The only time the Titans feel big is scylla attack and the france attack. Mothra... she no longer feels angelic she feels like a gaint moth that just glows and carries jia around
I don't get the part that there isn't a sense of scale
The sense of scale when they're in the surface earth is there, we can see how big they are to large or tiny structures. In the Hollow earth there isn't much to scale them with, but isn't that because the hollow earth was meant to scale with the monsters since that's their world, while the surface earth is too small for them?
Well yeah obviously the monsters are big, I just wasn’t a fan of how they filmed/portrayed that scale. The monsters are filmed in closeups and stuff, like regular people. So to me they felt like regular people in a miniature city, rather than giant creatures in a big city. That’s just my opinion though, it still wasn’t as bad as pacific rim 2.

You just got your "better" movie a few months ago, this one is for me. There are no rules that every movie MUST follow, only traditional standards that CAN be followed. I'd rather a movie like this know what it is and focus on that instead of trying to force in elements as an afterthought just because people assume it's a requirement. There are people like me who don't want to see characters crying about their traumas or achieving their dreams for the millionth time. It's not that the filmmakers didn't try, they just stuck to only what mattered for this particular movie.
A movie like this is a thrill ride on a screen, a rollercoaster doesn't need a plot, story, character development, etc. This movie did what it set out to do and did it pretty well. I don't like bad movies, just a different type than you do. I can hate Minus One because it's not my type of movie while also recognizing that it's technically a good movie for a different crowd. You have your burger your way and I'll have it mine, just some food for thought.
Personally I like dumb fun movies.
But that final fight scene killed way too many people.
tbh this is what gets me in these kind of movies. i like watching kaiju fight as much as the next person. but the human toll is something that always takes me out of it lmao. im always left wondering "damn how many people died".
Yes the humans are dumb but at least it’s to compliment the monsters. The monsters are great. U can like a bad movie.
I did appreciate how they let the monsters shine by sidelining the humans. But still, I think they could’ve had the humans doing something else.
i don't know man i honestly enjoyed the film i think it's great, great movie 8/10 however i don't like the humans as i get annoyed when it's just about humans i just wanna see big ass creatures fighting each other i feel like legendary should learn from toho the human writing since i kinda enjoy toho's way sorry if anything of this doesn't make sense i am usually not the best in english.

GodzillaxKong and Godzillas Minus One can both exist as great movies, with their own strengths. Its 2 completely different takes on godzilla and they don't need to be to alike.
If I’m being honest I enjoyed this movie I’ll say it but it’s a guilty pleasure for me, but I feel like comparing it to Godzilla minus one is kinda really bad, I get that Godzilla minus one was perfection and I absolutely loved it. But this movie while not as good I still had fun with. I kinda look at it this way, if I wanna watch a good Godzilla movie where the characters and story are actually believable I go to Toho but if I wanna be entertained with monster fights I go to the monster verse, I understand the criticism of this movie and I gotta say I agree. This movie is bad, but I had fun 😁 I’m sorry you didn’t but I always love hearing others opinion but I will give credit to Godzilla minus one I do like that film better than this.

The monsterverse is a sequel to feel related with.
If you don't connect with it in a way it surpases the fact it's CGI or "fake" battles, then you would feel the movie as something unreal... And is because you can't assume the movie as something literal, otherwise it would feel empty as your're saying. Kaijus, not only in monsterverse but in any other film, represent something that can be related to the real Life!
If you don't understand the sequel and what Godzilla and Kong symbolize, then you cannot comprehend GxK.
It's absurd to ccompare G Minus One with GxK because they transnmit their messages in a COMPLETELY different way, influenced by the culture (one is Japanese, the other ir American).
Thinking "we deserve better", is having an extremely closed and superficial view of the film, since the visuals or physics weren't the main purpose/objective (even though they were absolutely good), but the connection with the previous events in G-2014, Kong, G-2019, GvK, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and all the graphic novels with GxK is what really matters and gives this last production an edge over your superficial review.
Empty plot? Nah, just people that ignore the lore AND can't emotionally connect with it.

Keep in mind, I distinctly said that this movie can be enjoyed. I also said the movie has good moments. I personally just had issues with it. I’m not saying it’s the worst movie ever made or anything, I just know they can do better.
Wow you really put my thoughts into a video. I was so pumped for this but the lack of emotions towards any character and no real sense of scale made it really hard to truly love this movie.

Each monsterverse movie feels less attached to real life physics. The pace at which these animals move becomes increasingly fast. Godzilla 2014 did a great job at scaling them.
I agree 100%. I feel like it started with Skull Island. After that movie came out they started adapting everything to be more of that style and getting further trying to make it grounded.
2014 and 2017 were the most grounded

They make the monster run too fast and camera angle don't make the monster look bigger or impactful at all , you need slower movement to make them heavyer

Did YOU google it? Everywhere I look it says minus one cost between $10-15 million, which is what Toho themselves said.

Everyone seems to want serious films with deep stories for some strange reason and if a fiim is just a fun sci fi film light on plot and acting then its obviously a bad movie and must be punished for it. This film was a blast I thought and a hell of a lot more enjoyable than Minus One if everyone is comparing the two.

I’ve been saying this on multiple channels, but I really need to watch it again to form a second opinion because man…I feel like even some of the fight scenes feel hollow. Idk why!! I’m all for Godzilla fighting other monsters with cheesy elements but this feels like something marvel would put out in these past few years. Where you have human characters fill with too much comedic dialogue and fight scenes that while may feel entertaining at first but then as you watch them more the impact they have gets lost overtime. That’s how I feel about this movie currently. Not to say it’s terrible, it’s just okay. If anything if my current view of this movie is the same it will only be behind GVK, which is number 2 on my list of favorite monsterverse movies.
The final fight scene does feel a little cut short but the rest of the movie makes up for it imo.

the monsterverse doesn't need to have characters like those in minus-one, in minus-one they give importance to loss and tragedy, in GxK they do not because in this case WE DON'T HAVE TO CARE ABOUT HUMANS and it does not need to look like Pacific Rim either

No load at all. Godzilla is the longest running, most successful movie franchise to date, & it has that unprecedented status cause of movies like Godzilla x Kong, not Godzilla Minus One. Its an icon Speilberg, Scorcesi, & others have called top notch cinema for decades. Thats one serious movie to kick things off in 1954, & the rest being GxK type spectacle, sans Shin Godzilla & Godzilla Minus One in 2016 & 2023. Of course it demands more leeway & respect than the Johnny come lately stuff like Pacific Rim 2. Duuhhhh?

…didn’t you already post this comment or am I seeing things? Either way my friend, like I said the first time I’m not even a “critic.” I tend to side with audiences most of the time but this movie just didn’t do it for me. It has enjoyment to be sure but I was just hoping for more.

I’m not saying they had to be the same, but in my opinion this movie should have at least some level of investment so I could feel the stakes. I think that would’ve made it much more enjoyable.
How so? They are in the exact same genre starring the exact same big radioactive lizard. On film director chose to go in a direction that will resonate with audiences for years to come and the just threw something at our monkey brains to go "Ooooh! Shiny!"

List the genres then. Both movies occupy far more of the same genres than not.
@@JohnDoe-ur3tr Okay; Minus One is a standalone, dramatic, character driven period piece where you could remove Godzilla and you’d be left with a story of survivors guilt and found family. Godzilla is more a living embodiment of the protagonist’s trauma.
I’ve yet to see GxK but I do know it’s part of a wider franchise that’s action and spectacle driven with more emphasis placed on the monsters and their battles than the humans that technically drive the plot. As I said I haven’t seen this one so there could be something I’m missing.

Who looks for a reason to care about the humans in a godzilla movie? Let the titans step on them so we have less of them in the movie!🤣🤣 The characters in GxK weren't even that bad. Although the dialogue could have been better, and it had okay just okay comedy, We are here for the kaiju battles and incredible visuals of hollow earth. We want to see titan interactions with eachother. The human story should be minimal and yes it could have been better but it wasn't bad in this one. We don't need every movie to be emotional, or make us go into deep analysis and think intensely about what the movie is trying to teach us. This was an epic , fun ride with a solid story with a few problems but overall it was very entertaining.
Lets not play. The best parts of Godzilla minus one was when godzilla showed up. Just like gxk when the monster showed up. The old godzilla movie were also dumbfun if you were a real godzilla fan and kong fan youd know that... your videos stupid on the comments lol
Respectfully I disagree. If you take the human component out of minus one, then the Godzilla parts have little to no weight. And my favorite moments in that movie revolve around the people. But like I said, there are good moments in GxK, I just feel our standards should be higher.

If we don’t keep high standards then studios will keep cranking out mediocre movies. We’ve already seen the downfall of Marvel and Star Wars. If we want things to improve we need to demand it.

Godzilla x Kong is actually better imo than Minus one. I never watched Godzilla for the plot but even so the plot for this movie wasn’t even bad it’s actually been improving.

Skull Island had some good human characters. But the rest of these monsterverse movies had 1 decent actor and the rest all sucked balls. The dialog is usually super nasty. They should be able to do, " so much more better" 😝 Hurt my brain just typing that part. Lol
