  • The Branford-Horry House is a unique pre-Revolutionary dwelling constructed in the heart of the city’s oldest neighborhood. Considered one of Charleston’s most significant colonial residences, the Branford-Horry House has retained many of its original architectural elements, including extensive interior cypress paneling, and carved mahogany mantelpiece and cornice details. In addition, its nineteenth century two-story portico defines the residence as a rare and exceptional architectural resource within the Charleston Historic District. The building is associated with Charleston’s earliest acts of historic preservation and is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Branford-Horry House has an interior and exterior easement with the Preservation Society. The existing non-historic garden shed may be removed and an appropriate garage building may be added.

There is no lovelier dwelling in Charleston in its detailing and Old World craftsmanship than The Branford-Horry House. Having seen and admired the carvings, interiors, proportions, paneling, materials, fireplaces, mantles, fixtures, columns, and flooring at 59 Meeting Street along with the expertise and love that inspired its preservation/renovation/and restoration, it amazes me in its sheer 'comprehensiveness.' Those superlatives include the 'perfect mean' somehow gracing dimensions including height of each room. There are no curious elements, no missed architectural nuances, no odd ducks that slipped attention. Indeed, not a thing here seems less than ideal. Having restored historic homes here over several decades, such as the c.1800 Georgian residence of Dr. David Ramsay at 92 Broad Street, 19 Tradd's subtle near covert elegance, and Five Legare's return to its intended original beauty released from Victorian fuss and faux. It is Impossible to not marvel at the profound vigor of workmanship Charleston evidences everywhere you look along with uncommon pride craftsmen took in every square foot. This unequalled design brilliance here in the 18th and 19th centuries, led Charleston's entry to be among the most admired collections of manmade additions to natural beauty. They are creatures to be enjoyed for a while, then passed on, we can hope, in good and sound shape..Yet all are not-- and cannot be-- equal. Many other of the homes here seem beyond belief in their many spirited, stylish ways. As to that I can say only that the magnificence of The Branford-Horry House is self-evident--- neither may it be overstated nor overshadowed. It stands alone. Leonard L.Long, Jr.
