I was born in Britain and then spent all but the first five years of my life in Canada. The first time I visited Charleston, at about age 50, I got this overwhelming feeling that I was home. Can't say that I actually believe in past lives, but this was the closest I've ever come to thinking I'd been here before and belonged here.

As a native of the South Carolina Lowcountry our beautiful State is home to some of the most haunted places in the country. From Charleston to Savannah (the 2 places slaves where slave disembarked from the Middle Passage.) the whole area left with images and reminders of the past....some good, some not so good.

Charleston was the richest city in the colonies because up north everything came in to ports, But Charleston and the south were exporters. Economics 101. Times may change but economics doesn’t.
Women from rich families in Charleston wore the most up-to-date fashions from Paris and London. Many rich families sent their children back to Europe to be educated.

Not really nearby. The massive amounts of development here have ruined all the surrounding small towns and they’re bad now too. People are coming here in droves, mostly from up north (can’t say I blame them), but it’s definitely making it hard on the locals. You’ve really got to go at least and hour away to get any cheaper.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit. The Aiken-Rhett house is my all time favorites. Everytime I visit I see something different. I especially love the ballroom, I just stand and try to imagine all the wonderful social events held there. My youngest daughter and I actually attended the military funeral held for the men that were in the Hunley. It was amazing of course everyone and everything was historically correct down to the wool uniforms. Imagine that in Charleston heat! Middleton plantation is very beautiful, I was a docent there for about give years in the stable yard. I really miss those animals. Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas.

Thank you so much for sharing ALL of the beauty! Sigh ❤. Kind of sad to have to put in a disclaimer to masks. Wish both sides of the drama didn't get so fussy with the issue. My favorite homes in Charleston are the Single Wides, with their street front gated entrances to the beauty of first and second floor covered porches and central staircases on the inside. I swoon whenever I see one.

My favorite city!! There’s just something magical about Charleston-I felt like I entered another day and age when we visited in 2011. Thank you so much for sharing the beautiful homes and historical information. I find the plans for the Charleston City Jail to be very unfortunate. My souvenirs from this visit would’ve been the baby alligator and the lambs! 😁

Welcome to SC! You need to drop in on Greenville sometime. It is awesome to visit and to live in. BTW you won't see many masks in Greenville either. Maybe we can't compete with the coast but oh there is something very special about being at the foot of mountains and the beauty of a downtown waterfall and park. We are packed with history here and the glory of lots of old homes that have been preserved and loved.

Fabulous👍🏻. We toured the Calhoun house when we visited our son. Dig the old homes🌝
