    I recommend "Stronger After Stroke" a book by Peter Levine. Fortunately, I recovered or I am still recovering from a stroke before reading the book. This book explained how the brain can grow new neurons and even repair damaged ones. I need to work on strength but I am completely functional on both sides. I think what helped me was that while I lay in the hospital, I visualized myself walking. When it came to physical therapy, my left leg was so heavy that I could not stand. But on the second day of therapy which was several days later, I stood up. Used a walker for about a week then a cane for a couple of weeks and then no cane. They followed me walking with a wheelchair so I could take breaks. Now I have physical therapy at home. So if you know someone who had a stroke, let them know that if they can think, they can recover.

      Thank you for these suggestions. It is good to hear how much recovery you have had. On the Utah Neuro Rehabilitation channel I posted a video called "My Life after Stroke: Never Give Up." This person has your same attitude.

    Hey I had an urgent question, so if you do a spasticity reduction procedure will that post-op increase the chance of restoring function to the hand and arm? Cause isnt the reason stroke patients don’t wiggle and voluntarily move our effected limbs properly is because of lower blood circulation to the extremity, nerve problems and spasticity?? So if you fix spasticity isn’t all that’s left to fix is blood circulation??

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  5 років тому +2

      After a stroke, people may have difficulty with voluntary movement because the movement part of the brain is injured. Spasticity can make movement even more difficult because it is so hard to move tight muscles. It can help to treat the spasticity. But it is also important to work on movement. Other videos on the Utah Neuro Rehabilitation UA-cam channel talk about this. They are: My life after stroke: never give up, Improving arm use in hemiparesis, Brain plasticity to improve function, Recovery after stroke in childhood.

    Great video! quick question tho: Why does muscle tone increase when the part of the brain that controls it is damaged?

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  3 роки тому +3

      That is an excellent question. We do not know specifically. But the theory is that the brain inhibits the spinal reflexes. It calms the reflexes. So when you lose or decrease this inhibition, the reflexes and muscle tone increase.

    Does anyone have ideas about how much Botox is our of pocket. I have Kaiser and the doctor refuses to give Botox. The baclofen isn’t really working for me. I do have some movement in my arm but it’s getting harder and harder to move it due to spasticity. My ot massages me for 45 minutes before I can even start trying to move it. I’m only 33 years old and I just had a baby. I’m desperate to try any remedies to help with my recovery

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  5 років тому +2

      Depending on how much you need, it can cost anywhere to about $700 to $3000 out of pocket. Can you see a doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation or neurology? Also, Dysport is less expensive than Botox. The companies have financial assistance programs also.

So she couldn't see therapy for one month. Now its been few days since unlocked . Therapist told me that her muscle are stiff and tone because of one month break. He told me that she is going through spasticity and her pain will go after few sessions of therapy by doing stretching. She would cry and scream during therapy. I feel so pity when i see her crying n going thru pain.

    Hello, my father had a stroke almost last two years from now and he have this spasticity. Doc, can you tell me what are the important things to do for treating him? Also, a few of the individual videos that might help are: Brain plasticity to improve function, Life after stroke, never give up, improving arm use in hemiparesis, Mirror therapy.

      There are things you can do to help speech. Try to get her to sing along with songs. They should be simple and ones that she already knows and likes. This can help the brain to relearn to talk. Also, if she cannot talk at all, work with her to say vowels. Let me know if this works or not.

Until the medical fraternity tackle the cause, which is brain damage we've just got to suffer in silence. If the government fronted enough money into research as they spend on funding wars (that don't have anything to do with us ie, Ukraine vs Russia) we might make some progress. Stop fighting and help us.............please!
