Mr. Groban, you truly have the voice of an angel. You make this song sound so beautiful and so powerful, that all year long, when I feel myself giving up, feeling weak, feeling hateful, I listen to this and it makes me cry. Just exquisite. My late wife drew my attention to the perfection of this song and she was right about so many things. Re believing; it took me a while. Just know Christ is ready when you are. Many Christmases ago, I was driving in a rainy night when this song came on. I literally had to pull over to listen to this BEAUTIFUL rendition of this song because it filled me with tears and I couldn't see to drive. Lol! When I got home, I immediately called the radio station and asked them who sang that song. They told me and I replied that Josh Groban has a New Fan! Absolutely Beautiful!

I'm an atheist, and this is definitely my favorite Xmas song. I think it's one of the most stunning songs ever written. A lot of religious songs are absolutely beautiful. Believers do know how to write music, gotta give them that!

@@23bruceman so I was just looking up the history of this song, and it turns out that the original poem the lyrics are derived from was written by a non-religious French poet and wine merchant (who had one hand), the music was composed by a Jewish atheist, and the song was banned despite its popularity because of this. Then eventually the lyrics were translated into English by a unitarian minister, but he took some pretty big liberties with his translations.
So since the music and melody, which is where most of the beauty of any song comes from, IMO, were written by an atheist, I'm not sure that argument holds water. And the unitarians, well, they typically only view Jesus as a prophet/ wise person/ possibly supernatural and have no official stance on whether god exists, so I don't know that that lends your argument any credibility, either.
But I don't disagree that some people are very moved by thinking about their religious beliefs, and that they can be inspired by such to write beautiful music.
Personally, I fail to see why the idea of the Abrahamic god is so appealing to some people, but Jesus had some good things to say.
Ther IS God. I know it is hard to believe but I have proof. It is subjective and only me and my girl can experience it. But trust me, God is real and is part of everybody's life. Not religious? Maybe this song is telling you something. The Lord touches everybody's heart. Music is one way he does this. God LOVES music. Especially singing. God bless you and have a good night!

My second Christmas since my father passed away - in the years after my mother's passing I discovered this rendition of O Holy Night (the best solo version performance IMHO). My father and I loved it, and we had to turn it up every time it came on the music streaming channels. I have always loved this carol. Now it's meaning is even greater, dearer. If this is your first Christmas without a loved one, know you are not as alone as you may feel. Merry Christmas everyone.

It's not just about style, range or even emotion, which are important of course. But it's that special sound that gives the voice a certain quality, particularly the timbre of that tone utilizing complex overtones, or sound waves and that unique “something” that gives color and personality to a voice. Josh Groban has such a voice and, sorry, but the three you mentioned aren't even in the same league.
Just one note out of his mouth and the rich tone and quality instantly grabs you and you know exactly who it is. It's his trademark and a voice that is truly rare.

When I first heard this about 12 years ago on the BBC concert night, I decided this guy has the best male voice ever--bar NONE !
I have not changed my mind. He sings about angel voices---he has the main angel voice, that could convince a non-believer to come back.
I think a lot of people forget that Jesus is the reason for the season. Thank God for his son Jesus Christ our Savior
