    Your mistaken about some of your claims in this video. I have the big six and you absolutely do not have to only use the 4 stereo tracks as mono tracks. They record to two separate tracks or mono. So they share the EQ which you could knock it for, but they are definitely 8 tracks not four. I use my stereo tube pre and comp with them for rooms, overheads, Toms and plenty of other useful sources where the fact that they share an EQ is actually a plus. Realistically, most people own other pre amps and compressors they wanna use anyways. I absolutely love those channels for drums. I have a focusrite octo pre and 8 channel focusrite rack comp that pairs swimmingly with it. I also have an SSL2+ that I can use the mic pre's from and go out the alt 3/4 outputs and into the extra channels. I have already used the big six to record my full band using all 16 tracks at once and it sounded great. The drummer took 10 tracks, the guitar had one, the bass had one, we had lead and backup vocals on thier own tracks plus two room mics to capture the full sound. I agree for summing back in it's really not the greatest EQ section to use for mixing but they are definitely very helpful when tracking to give your tracks a bump of high end sheen, low end thump or warm up the mids. You don't really want to get to out of hand with EQ while tracking anyways. I do like summing out to hit my racks gear and go back in. I also like the fact that I can buss all my toms, vocals or guitars to a single rack comp or effects unit and then send them back in one stereo track for an Aux bus to blend in parallel to my mix. I have also found sending my master stereo track out to the fusion and then kissing it with the G-comp sounds really good. I would also like to point out that the listen mic compressor in the big six is really an accurate portrayal from the larger consoles. I A/B'd it with the plug-in and it sounds even better for crushing some snares, drum buss or whatever you would like and then blending it back in. Is the big six as good as a full format console, of course not. But it is a hell of a product! It does alot and is definitely worth more then it cost in my opinion. It's not designed to replace a full size console in a professional studio. It's designed to give your home studio a very solid solution for hybrid mixing and recording. I absolutely love having it at my house to record and sum to my rack gear with. There are really no other products in this price range that deliver this amount of versatility and quality for your home studio.

      You're right, with the stereo channels i propably could have clarified this further, but there are still limitations to those stereo channels, like as you said they may share eqs, which is good for some things like maybe overheads, but maybe not ideal for other dual mic situations either.
      I like your work around idea though. Great option for your workflow. However my main argument here, youve unintentionally supported, in that you need a bunch of extra outboard gear to really get the most out of the big six. Great if You have that gear already, maybe not the best option for some people just starting out.

      @@allIhaveISMusic1 No it doesn't. I've seen lots of these hateful comments made by people who don't own one. I can assume your just another bitter bedroom Artist that is mad at the gear for no reason. I was using a 6k setup from UAD before I got the SSL and it has way better headroom, monitoring and tracking control. The built in summing is fantastic and It is easier to use my outboard gear with this then any other interface I've tried. I've had a ton of them in the past 27 years. I actually got to try one for free and I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't outperform the setup I already had. Save your bitterness for somebody who wants to sulk with you. I don't have any brand bias. I don't care who makes something, it either delivers results or I get rid of it. I could care less who makes it. I've never owned an SSL console nor did I desire one. Having an interface with built in compression and EQ shaping on the way in with very easily accessible routing options for my outboard gear has been amazing. I don't care who likes it or who doesn't. The results speak for themselves and the big six is a fantastic sounding/ versatile piece of gear. If you don't like it, don't buy it but I find your quest to make others hate it a clear signal that your bitter for some reason. Maybe you can't afford it or you already bought some shit gear and then saw this and are now butthurt? Who knows, but your motivation to speak out against it just shows the troll in you is real 💯

      @@diyrecordingstudio I think it was designed to work with your other gear. They could have easily added 8 more pre's and raised the price a couple hundred bucks. If you have no other pre's it is definitely not the interface for you but I actually like the 8 open channels. I've heard people bashing it for being too big and then complaining it doesn't have enough pre's yet the 16k API box only had four inputs and takes up half the room. Nobody seemed to bash it. I think it's all hype and clickbait. I like mine. I haven't talked to anyone who hates thiers. I've heard a ton of people say it's over priced yet it does more then 99% of other interfaces and I switched from my UAD Apollo rig with 16 inputs to this and noticed a giant leap in quality from monitoring/summing and insert capabilities. It especially shines when recording a whole band. Multiple headphones mixes, I/O and near zero latency. I hope somebody outdoes it soon. I'd love to have an even bigger one priced this affordably.

    Well, I have the Big Six and it has a pristine sound. I was using the Apollo with other gear, but I have to say that the Big Six it's really what they claim to be, it really improved the sound of my productions by adding the detail needed in my tracks. Now I can really hear the percussion and the drums have more punch. I am mixing using 7 busses send to the different channels of the Big Six and it really added more definition, clarity and punch when going through the Big Six, something that I didn't have before with just the Apollo. The routing it's very smart and I really love it. For example, I route my instrument mix to a cue and the voices to a different cue this gives me the flexibility of adjusting the music track and voice to different levels getting the artist or myself the voice level needed to really hear your performance as you will when you are singing live and therefore you can sing with more confidence and with better pitch. Also, the cues can be used as a send and return to add parallel processing or to add effects to the channels. The EQ it's a very smart design and it really works. I been cutting as lot of plugins because the great sound it has and the buss compressor even when it does not have all the controls found in the G-Buss 500 rack for example, it glues all the tracks together as the 500 series does because the use the attack and release settings more used for the majority of engineers using the original version. As mentioned here, it's aimed for home studios that want to add the SSL analog Mojo to their productions but it certainly does a lot more than that if you take the time to read the manual as I did. My virtual instruments sound a lot better because the high mid and highs harshness of the digital sound have been rounded out by running it through the analog circuitry of the Big Six. In order to do this with any other gear will require at least twice the amount of money because just a studio level converter with 16 outs is over $2000 plus the summing mixer of your choice. It integrates nicely with Windows 10. I totally disagree with the comments at the end of the video, the only way to know is if you have one as I do. Also, the Big Six has insert points for the first four channels and the master buss to add more processing to your mix. I have the SSL fusion and the SSL Ultraviolet as an insert on my master buss and just this requires a lot of I/O if you are using a sound interface. This is the best solution for Hybrid home studios on a budget period!

      Yeah so for you, like some other guys in the comment section, this is a great product, and it accomodates your outboard and workflow well. And that's great and i fully acknowledge that in this video. However, if you read through the comment section, there are also some would be buyers of this unit, that are unaware of some of the limitations this device has, as they don't have the same outboard, or are actually in need of more preamps etc.. So it might be the perfect solution for you, which is excellent, just not the answer for everybody.

      They screwed up with the lack of external clocking and the limited EQs.
      I would rather pay an extra $1k for a midband parametric...I don’t need the high shelf.

  • @Ultimate_Wasabi
    @Ultimate_Wasabi 2 роки тому +7

    So as someone who owns the original Six, I have to agree with what you've said (and I knew these caveats prior to purchase). From my experience, the Six gives you basic tools to get your recorded tracks to a more polished place that would normally require extra gear. The EQ curves shift when switched to bell, so they are much more versatile than I expected and quite smooth. That said, you can't use them for surgical EQing (even if they added a mid frequency to the Big Six) and I don't think that was ever the intention. As an example, for summing I have an RME interface card outputting via ADAT to a Cranborne 500 series and from there the individual outputs go to the Six for mix down. There is also hardware on the mix bus insert.
    Both units are great for home studio use, but expect to spend quite a bit more if you want to get the most out of them. The Big Six has an interface which does address some of the issues I had to get around as mentioned above, but I would expect it to have average latency. Due to this, it doesn't suit my needs. Both of these units are great for bringing a polished sound to a home studio and the value is definitely there considering what you get including a monitoring section. However, I think people need to plan well and set their expectations accordingly before purchasing.

    Jesus, you realise that with a full g-comp and full e series EQs, this would cost 10k+. Nobody is mislead here. SSL six sounded fantastic, I'm sure this will too. This will be a big hit just like the Six was. You realise small mixers don't even have per channel compressors, yes maybe a sweepable mid with questionable quality. You can go the Allen Heath route and that's ok but this is pro audio here with tons of headroom and top quality components.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  2 роки тому +1

      Totally agree with you. As i state in the video, there's a lot on offer in this console. Its potentially a great piece of gear. People just need to also understand the limitations as well.

    • @intnrmri
      @intnrmri 2 роки тому +1

      These are not really limitations as ssl channel comps don't usually have attack for example and most users leave the g-comp on the same settings all the time. Watch the SSL engineer video explaining everything. They chose sensible defaults and that's what you can cram in this form factor and be able to hit the price point without compromising quality. Let's not pretend any budget mixer even the Tascams would stand up against SSL. You quickly realise that it's better to have some limitations with pro quality instead of 3 band eq on every channel that are brittle, hello Mackie. It's night and day.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  2 роки тому +2

      @@intnrmri i disagree regarding the settings on a gbuss compressor, i would definitely use different settings for many different styles of music or for different dynamic response.
      However, once again, i think this is actually a really great console, potentially, but you have to be honest about what is can really do functionally, and what other gear you're going to have to combine with it, to make it work for a bunch of situations.

    • @intnrmri
      @intnrmri 2 роки тому

      @@diyrecordingstudio i get that it's not completely honest to write "g-comp" on it, it should read "g-comp style", "e series eq style" as the underlying design is really very similar it just doesn't have all the controls. But it just doesn't fit. Well you can at least buy a full g comp for 2k and put it on the insert, but then again thats almost the price of this full mixer.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  2 роки тому +1

      @@intnrmri @Jazz Crates yeah totally agree with you here. I really think for the price, there's a lot on offer, but if you check the comment section here, a lot of would be buyers think theyre would be getting 8 full preamp channels.
      I know it would be hard to fit much more in this unit, but i would rather have a more usuable mid band or something.

    I'm just gonna list what I was hoping this video would contain:
    *How does it compare to a full size SSL console, in terms of sound (that's the impression your title gave me and is why I clicked on it)
    *Your personal opinion on how it sounds in general as compared to using console emulating plugins, etc.
    *More detailed analysis of its individual parts (in terms of sound), EQ, Channel dynamics, buss comp, summing, etc. and how it compares to similar plugins.
    *Cheery on top (as a fun comparison) would've been a sound comparison of it and something similar, like the Craneborn, Mackie, etc.
    I really wasn't expecting someone making a review of a product based off its specs from a website with no hands-on experience. Can you imagine if every UA-camr did this? It would be almost impossible and very time consuming sifting through endless uploads, trying to find one of an actual product review with examples. Just my .02 Cheers

But still useful to fill in gaps where the mixer can't, like additional EQ bands and frequency points for instance.

    I wasn't sold on the Big SiX at first. Then, recently I found myself looking at a $6K+ 500 series setup that would give me drum bus compression, mix bus compression and a stereo Pultec-style EQ for my mix bus. I've also been looking at channel strips lately, though that pursuit is far less urgent.
    Enter Big SiX....again. I think I'm gonna go for it now. Obviously, it takes care of the channel strip as I don't need a lot there beyond just a stellar pre and some light compression. I'll EQ individual channels ITB like a sane person. Add the Tegeler Audio EQP1 on the master bus insert and there's my mix bus sorted. I can send my drum bus through channels 3 and 4 to grab some compression and voila! Thousands saved!
    I'll probably never sum through it ('cause why?), and once I get my sound dialed in, I'll probably rarely ever move a knob or a fader, so no worries about recall. 🤷🏾‍♂️
    From what you described in the video, you want API's The Box 2 with an interface. You're not gonna get that anywhere near this price point. It is what it is.

    The main problem for me is the lack of direct outs (it has the same number of outputs as SSLSix) and no ADAT. Taking into account it the Big6 sums 18 channels and SSL6 sums 12 and that they removed the changing bell frequency it is no need to upgrade from my SSLSix for me. Thanks for your review of the BIG SIX!
    I see it a bit differently. The BIG SIX, finally I found my recording, mixing and summing desk! All in one! The greatest relief is getting rid of all the endless cables, patching. Just plug the USB in...that's it! No Total Mix etc...that's amazing, just routing inputs and outputs and your good to go! The EQ is great, but I sometimes use some plugins in addition, especially with the low end. Except a Drawmer 1973 I have no need for more external hardware at the moment.
    Another big point for me, the preamps, the headroom, the converters and the stereo imaging/summing!
    I often sum two times in a mixing process, the first time I sum vocals, guitars etc everything seperate in groups.
    Then I sum the groups...perfect workflow for me!
    I am very happy!
    Cons: it gets very hot and a comp on every channel would be great!

    I think its good for a secondary studio setup where you are doing overdubs and vocal/guitar tracking where you can send a stem mix into the mixer for monitoring to the artist. Off cause it is not for large projects but that is what the SSL Origin is made for.
    It's nice to have a small format quality mixer where 16 or 32 channels would be overkill. The "Eq problem" can be fixed by using the insert and a 500 series SSL EQ/Compressor or SSLs plugins (360). in the daw.
    The stereo channels are not made for recording but for sending stems from the daw into the mixer for summing. Yes you can record with them keyboards and other stereo line level signals.

I just wish they included inserts on the stereo channels and adat. As for the eq, it's not really meant for full mixing. I eq in the box with the UC1 and then sweeten it up a little with the B6. I dont think it could "replace it", no. The API preamp and compressor you're talking about are completely different preamps and compressors to what's in the SSL big SiX. All of these hardware pieces are just different tools for different jobs. Some preamps and compressors are great all rounders. some are great on drums, some are amazing on vocals or bass. The SSL compressor has it's own sound, as does the preamp. The question is, is that THE sound that is right for what you're doing?

I'm thinking about this for home, and 4 channels will do perfect for tracking Glyn Johns style drums and it's just a 16" bop kit. I'm just wondering about the longevity of this device.. will the digital section get finnicky and croak in a few years? will some of the analogue parts? would it be better to get a just a mixer and converter separate.. where either section can be replaced.

    I agree with you, the most important part about the product is its user. I guess there are a lot of opportunities to use the six as startingpoint and or heart of some analog gear, with some easy bus mixing, aswell as professional monitoring on speakers and headphones (discrete hp mixes, mointor controll section).
    But if you want a real console the big six is a bad idea. But i guess 3k for 12 Channels analog plus the ext1, ext2 and summing in, and on top all of those quite well thought features, signales to me, its a modern centerpiece for hybrid productions.
    A little note on the g comp. I agree i dont like to print on every mix, but just dialing it in during the mix phase is awesome. U always get a slight compression, that is rather adaptive to its current signal. And again id like to mention that retailing price, of the original bus comp is arroung 3k as well.
    But the quintessence of the video is quite on point, good job :)

    I found the fact they brought out a big one as exciting then when looking at it I thought it gave a lot for the money but looking at what it gave it didn’t give me what I wanted from ssl… the eq is only a half give as it’s not the eq from the consoles and only added a mid range eq to the two band eq… so looking at it I thought it would be a summing console with some added processing already on it… but then it didn’t have much flexibility as most summing units, then it didn’t have proper bus functionality and seemed like it would be harder to route things even with outboard gear and I would be buying it to simply have more processing functionality than a summing mixer but then it would then be harder to actually set things up how I would want to to make analog mixing easier… so a less onboard processing but better routing like the heritage audio 32 channel summer would be way better even though it costs a lot more… the only use I see this for is having a bit of analog to travel with… but then again I would need too also bring other things… they dropped the ball, but in it see there a massive change to bring out something else if they doubled the price… ssl isn’t known for recording it’s known for mixing… simply make a mixing console with the processing the big ones offer in a smaller package… their small consoles with 500 series slots is a little better but then again the cost is 8 times more and drops the ball for that reason… I have been having hope they make a more extensive Fusion processor and if they made a mixer like I imagined combining the more extensive fusion would give you a full analog setup… it’s cool what they’ve made, but not at all iconic

    Love the review. All depends on perspective. Im looking at it as an interface, and summing mixer. that includes monitor control, talkback, etc. All with SSL quality. In that perspective, I see the 4 great mic preamps as a bonus. with inserts.
    I have other outboard and could easily track drums and more. I saw that if ur setting input levels with outboard gear then you can still use the stereo inputs as individual inputs for tracking line level, where i wouldnt be using th onboard effects anyway. I actually wouldnt use them much if at all. I would use the board for tracking up to 16 inputs is enough for me. I would use the usb routing to insert my outboard effects while mixing in the box. then i would use the usb routing for analog summing, no effects. use the bus comp and or the main bus insers to patch in hardware on the bus. back into the daw. to me that work flow would fit
    as u can tell, i kinda want one lol

    Hey mate ! At first I was afraid to found an annoying new video about how "bad" is the Big Six and some questionnable comparisons with less high end gear etc. I recently saw a video with somebody comparing it to a Behringer console...! Oh dear.

    Great video! but I disagree in the point about needing extra gear to get the better result being a downside, I think given the flexibility of having an integrated interface, just getting a few channel compressors and eq (eg, for just two mono channels inserts) and a stereo eq and comp for the master section, you can make use of it very easily for tracking, mixing, and mastering

      Sorry Rick but I beg to differ my friend. See there was thing once upon a time called tape. It added inherent noise, saturation and compression.
      With a bunch of preamps that do the same like Neve; API, and the like, you are getting all three effects x 2.
      So in comes the “clean” (not as clean as some might think though) ssl transistor based pres and now you half the undesired effects!
      Undesired you say!!! But everyone wants saturation, and compression on their tracks, especially nowadays. We’ll that’s because now tape is gone certain genres benefit from that saturation.
      However, in this lies the problem that you have missed my friend. Certain genres do want “clean, transparent preamps with extra headroom”. Take a guess which ones 🧐

That would make integration with interfaces so much easier. Also, I can‘t find any information on latency and quality of drivers?! Coming from an RME Interface I am spoiled in that domain. So, not sure whether that solves my challenge of integrating my ever growing collection of synths, drumcomputers, effects and stuff. And my interest in analog summing. Don’t really understand the problem with the eq’s. Most modern workflows aren’t doing surgical eq on the way in and if you need to, proper mic placement/selection or acoustics should probably be something to learn first, printing when mixing takes too much time, recallability is always an issue and plugins are way more powerful. Since they’re fixed frecuencies the design screams that it wasn’t meant to be compared with the classic ssl eq. Anyway, the big six isn’t a perfect product, but maybe it’s value relies in being the first attempt to bring analog technology to all people so they can understand that the reason they don’t sound good isn’t their gear. Specially nowadays that advertisement and social networks try to sell analog products as the ultimate purchase for your artistic realization or the long kept secret to amazing sounds

I agree that if you have a huge production in mind, the big six, while more flexible than it's smaller sibling, would still involve too many clever and brain-draining workarounds. For me, it might be exactly what I'm looking for - I am not totally sure yet but the console is definitely on my radar. I have had an A&H gsr24 for ten years but since my band no longer exists, I have been more or less planted on channels 17-24 of the A and H. So, eight channels for me would work out quite nicely. I do more or less only acoustic guitar and vocals stuff with a bit of bass or percussion and a second vocal. I guess there are quite a few of us out there who work like that and so this desk could be a good option. It's quite pricey but I guess it has superior sound over my A and H.. Anyway, just saying..

The hardware may be more expensive....but it does still sound better. I know that comment will piss a lot of people off, but hardware is still better than software in SOME regards. Plugins have other benefits, but i would still track and mix on hardware as much as possible then finish things off with plugins. I always get a better result.
      Thanks for your opinion and taking the time to comment.

      Dude
      Acustica Audio Just took the Mixer Game and Ran with it....
      With Camel, Snow and Frost
      With Camel
      Your Getting a very well live analog Sampled / Accurate Algorythic version of a $15,000 British Triden A and B Consoles
      With Snow your Basically getting 90% of New RND Mastering Processor
      and with Frost your getting 90% of a brand new SSL E Mastering Strip,
      now...
      with any Low or Mid Level Analog Gear
      your Mixes summed with those live analog plugins and final master wit those and ran though your own gear...are going to sound wayyy...more professional than "Just having that "New Low Level SSL Mixer " that does not even have the same technology or Pre s as a Full SSL G, E or 9000 J....man...that thing compared
      to having your own full analog rack with some top quality Acustica Audio plugins...is a RIP OFF!!
      Honestly
      the Camel Plugin Bundle (Trident A and B Mixing Consoles)
      Blow the SiX s away...LOL

      A year later, I bought it, and I will double back. It is the best equipment I have purchased. WIth 7 Synths, this is a central hub. I also have my inserts running on 1/2 to my patch bay for outboard processing. I use my ST cue for Pedal effects on my synths! All in All Money well spent. For $2299 you will be hard pressed to find another Mixer that can do all the big Six can do imho

    But to be fair, it was designed for Home Studios as i understand it. So you wouldn*t expect a full functional Console especially with that price tag. How would you design a console in that price range.... you have to make compromises

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  2 роки тому

      Totally agree. It can be a decent bit of gear in a home studio, my biggest gripe is it wasn't the one fix all mixing solution they were making it out to be. All the promotional vids utilized heaps of outboard gear to really make it work as a "studio console". I think a lot of home studios would be better off with something smaller scale but more flexible.

      @@diyrecordingstudio OK, i guess they got me then. : -) I personally are not very much into all this technical stuff , i just wanted to make music at home with a drum maschine, a sampler and some synth sometimes in a daw and sometimes dawless without an steady headegg (cabeling etc). And right now it seems to be working for that purpose. I sold my Audient ID22 and Asp800 for it and for me it sounds a lot better, although i dont know what would be the Benchmark Soundwise in that pricerange. I have it for a week right know , i can say i am impressed with the eqs but are a little disappointed by the compressors (both Bus and ChanellComps). I thought the Hardware Comps had to be much better then my VST Comps, but to be honest i like the SSL VST Comps more...

  • @dirtyharry1881

    I totally agree. I don't know whom is this really useful for. You can find analogue summers cheaper. You can find great converters (also cheaper) and pres like those of Focusrite for a fraction of the cost. And you can add outboard eq(s) that you can actually control, or EQ your stuff itb and route them to the summer. All added together for less that the Big six... and if one of them breaks, you can replace only this one piece!
    So, I've already done this in my home setup. Can I record drums or a live band? No! Could I do it with the Big Six? Also no!
    But, admit it, you kinda overdid it with the fart jokes.

    • @annekedebruyn7797

      It's for me!
      I track through the mixer because of the nice pres. Then only go back when I need to analog sum for whatever reason.
      I don't need it to be a a full blown console as I am just going in and out with minor compression and a bit of tone shaping. The rest is going to be done in the DAW.
      But having the option to go back to the mixer to sum in some analog gear in an easy way is sweet.
      If that's your workflow, there isn't a device out there for the price that offers the ease of use without it being a hassle of patching in multiple devices.

    Honestly I couldn't see myself buying one. I thought I'd be interested but there's China written all over it. I'd rather just have some nice 500 series stuff at the sane price point. What was great about the smaller brother was the versatility for such a small form factor. Thanks for the video..

    This video is like “look guys it’s a good product but look at where I can point out there little obvious marketing discrepancies! I know the history of SSL and they are being shady”! Everyone does it and if the hardware sounds good that’s all that really matters. Who cares what letter console they didn’t 100% replicate bro. Haha it costs $4k or something.. think about that.. Review the box, not the marketing team.

    1. Anyone spending $3K on a product should know enough to RTFM first. So surprises about what you’re getting would be on you.
    2. I am a UA Apollo user. I have wanted to see a mid quality analog console with A/D + D/A to use as an ADAT expander for an Apollo. This product would have been perfect if it had ADAT I/O.
    3. Even without ADAT, I am contemplating it. I have decided to use it during tracking for extra inputs on a second Mac. I will still use the Apollos (X6 and Twin X) on my primary system for inputs that need Unison.
    The Big Six will give me 16 inputs and outputs for line level gear for $3K. An X16 has 16 inputs and outputs and nothing else for $4,500.
    While I track line level devices on my second system I will use Big Six’ 4 mic/line/ instrument channel strips as an analog front end on the 4 line inputs on the X6 using those channel’s inserts.
    And I can use the 2 channels of the bus and listen mic compressors as outboard analog gear with the Apollo too.
    Sure, I will have to import tracks from the Big Six system to the Apollos’ system. But I am looking at this as a workaround for the missing ADAT issue.
    Overall this hits what I’ve been looking for. Just not a perfect solution.

    • @diyrecordingstudio
      @diyrecordingstudio  2 роки тому

      Yeah adat added would be great. It's a great piece of kit provided you have the outboard to support it, which it sounds like you do so I'm sure it will serve you well.
