ROMANIAN ROAD TRIP on the Transfagarasan Highway

  • My Romanian road trip continues on the Transfagarasan highway through the beautiful Carpathian mountains. The novel "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, published in 1897, is very loosely based on Romanian history and in particular Vlad III, also known as Vlad Dracula or Vlad the Impaler, who lived from around 1428 to 1477. During my last visit to Romania in 2018 I visited Bran Castle, which is often referred to as the Dracula castle. But it actually has no known connection with Vlad III. There's another castle in Romania, Poenari, that does have a strong connection with Vlad III, because he restored the castle and lived in it for many years. Unfortunately the castle is currently closed, so I wasn't planning on going there. But as luck would have it I ended up coming across it quite unexpectedly. Wow! You saw Poenari!!! There is a hiking trail that goes up but the view looks absolutely worth it. The real Vlad in my opinion was a heroic man with a truly incredible story of perseverance. He's worth reading about. So glad that you at least got to see it. Maybe next time you visit it'll be open. I hope it is when I visit in the future! Enjoying these Romania videos! It is basically the Eastern Orthodox Christian portrayal of Demetrius on the horse 🐴 spearing the gladiator Lyaeus. Demetrius is depicted spearing the gladiator Lyaeus, who according to story was responsible for killing many Christians. Lyaeus is commonly depicted below Demetrius and lying supine, having already been defeated; Lyaeus is traditionally drawn much smaller than Demetrius. In traditional hagiography, Demetrius did not directly kill Lyaeus, but rather through his prayers the gladiator was defeated by Demetrius' disciple, Nestor.

    so, the Poienari Stronghold or Citadel, has a path through the mountain to get up to it, but it is made out of 1480 stair steps that go in zig-zag all the way up. Not easy to climb up there. The building itself is in ruins, just some foundations and a few walls remain. The view itself worth's a lot more than the building :)))) Tepes told his men to mount the horseshoes the other way around, to fool the ottomans that they are going in the other direction, when they were retreating there, and it worked :)

    From where you were standing when you started your segment on Poenari, if you walk past the hotel and restaurant towards Poenari itself, about 100 yd past the restaurant, you will see a sign that points into the trees. Right there are a couple of little stands and that's where the staircase up to the top begins. It's just right off the main road that you were standing on. There's no back road or secondary road that leads you up that mountain. I believe the only way to get up there is by taking the 1500 steps up. I've been there four times and it's never been closed during the day.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos

      I see, well it's really too bad then that the people I asked at the restaurant told me otherwise. I specifically asked them if there was a trail I could hike up and they said no. What a shame if the trail was actually open and I missed the chance to hike it.

    • @davewilliamson4357
      @davewilliamson4357 Рік тому +3

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos Don't get me wrong, it could have very well been closed. Not sure why it would be since it's just a series of actual steps all the way to the top. Definitely minimum maintenance but easier than an actual dirt trail or something like that, for sure. However, 1500 steps doesn't seem like a lot but once I got about a third of the way up, I realized it is. At least for someone like me. Haha! Anyway, I'm sure you'll be back to Romania. I highly doubt they would keep the steps up closed for long since that's what a lot of people stop at that restaurant and hotel for. They could definitely do a better job of marking where the actual steps up are though. It's seriously like a hand-painted sign with an arrow and a half-assed hand drawing of Vlad. 😆

According to Wiki, the ruins can be accessed by 1480 concrete steps, there is also a You Tube clip showing you how to do. Also according to Wiki, Vlad the Impaler probably never even set foot in Bran Castle, mostly due to this area not being very friendly toward him, that and it wasn't under his rule. If you make it up to them ruins, that be the ultimate experience in my opinion to have in Romania.

      Even found many youtubers' homes, but of course I'm not gonna show up out of the blue or tell anyone...
      Sometimes a sign with a street name, or a store, a church, a mountain, can hint where they live. Even a swimming pool can be found if I know the general area.

    Hello Gabriel , the mosaic probably depicts either one of the archangels , michael or gabriel since most depictions are of one of them riding a horse slaying a dragon , the names are of the one/ones who made it and the church is probably built before 1800's , most of the rural churches in isolated towns are very old.

      Demetrius is depicted spearing the gladiator Lyaeus (Λυαίος Lyaíos), who according to story was responsible for killing many Christians.

    What might be the problem in that village, is that the 2006 film Borat with Sacha Baron Cohen was partially filmed in a small town like this in Romania called Glod, not too far from where you were in the Southern Carpatians. The film was very controversial in that it took this Romanian village and pretended it was somewhere in Kazachstan, and it featured actual inhabitants of this town. What they didnt tell the people is that the whole point of the film was to show how backward and silly this place was. Nobody really spoke English so they unknowingly helped to ridiculize their own home. Even worse, they were told that the film was in fact a documentary about village life and they only got payed like $4 per day for participating. The film raked in $262 million while the production costs were only $16 million. So when these people see a foreigner with a camera, they might think that they are just there to make fun of them because they live in such rural circumstances.
