  • Today we review the Beretta 92fs in 9mm and the 96fs in 40s&w. We shoot both at some steel and then take some slow motion footage to compare recoil.

I remember when we got the M9s in our armory, and had to trade our 1911s in. Mixed feelings.
Good review brother, I have never been a 40 S&W guy.

The 40s&w is the red-headed step child of the firearms community 😄. I could understand the reluctance to switching out from the time tested 1911. But in the late 80’s. Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson sure made the 92f look like an amazing pistol

Thanks, that was a very good comparison and I appreciated the so-mo footage. I had given serious consideration to buying a new carry gun in .40S&W. If I could find what I wanted I intended to make it my primary carry pistol. I think that .40S&W does have a little more oomph behind it than 9mm. But the more research I see on it and the currant gun laws here in California, I might just go back to my favorite carry pistol, the 1911, in God's favorite caliber, .45ACP. Just to spark controversy, his 2nd favorite gun & cartridge pair is the S&W Model 19 Combat Magnum and .357Margnum.

Thanks Frank! I’m a fan of the 40 s&w but it does take a little more training to shoot as well as 9mm. I have spoken with a couple emergency room doctors who have seen firsthand the devastating effects of the 40 on the body. But you can never go wrong with a classic 1911 in 45acp. Its track record is pretty solid.

I have heard that the new Glock Gen 5 Model 22 pistols in. .40 S&W are better at handling the recoil than previous generations due to its having been beefed up. If they are approved in California, maybe a trip to a rental range and take one for a test drive to see how you like it. I like the .40 S&W as a cartridge, but it is tougher on the shooter in guns that were converted from 9mm to .40 without adding some mass to withstand the extra pressure. Good luck.

@@johndilday1846 This is California. We're still getting Gen 3 Glocks. I'm not expecting to get Gen 5s anytime in the next several years.
I did carry an issued G22 .40S&W for the last 6 years of my career. I'm a 45 year 1911 .45acp shooter. I can shoot .40S&W, I'm just not feeling that the ballistics are enough of an improvement to peruse the .40S&W in any platform. And I know how I shoot a 1911.

Yeah that slow motion really captures the difference in the muzzle flip. It is a good bit more with the 40 S&W. Imagine if it was a 10 mm. Great video and thanks for the info. I need to get me a Baretta one day.

I myself was surprised to see the difference in the slow motion capture. You can feel the difference when shooting but the video really does show the higher recoil of the 40. Hope you are enjoying your weekend my friend!

    I guarantee that .40 S&W ammo has around 400 ft-lbs of energy, while 9mm ammo is under 300 ft-lbs.
9mm range ammo is significantly underpowered compared to 9mm defensive ammo. In contrast, .40 S&W range ammo typically matches the power of its defensive counterpart.
This creates a bias, as 9mm, which is already softer shooting, appears even smoother. This is because no one trains with $1.50-$2.00 per round defensive ammo.

That's true. It can get very pricey. I will train with defensive ammo now and then but not often. It is usually when I am ready to change out ammunition that has been in magazines over time.

Thanks for the video! I really like my 92X RDO Compact. It was my first all metal hammer fired pistol, I'm currently thinking about a Sig P220 Legion but I having a hard time deciding between 45acp & 10mm, do you have any thoughts on the matter?

    • @texmexshoots
      @texmexshoots  6 місяців тому +1

Hey there Steven! Unfortunately I can’t comment much on the 10mm due to my limited experience with it. The Sig 220 in 45 has a solid track record. That being said, you get a lot more energy with the 10mm. I think either one would be excellent, so it comes down to ammo availability and your intended use.

Given the difference in recoil, and those Berrettas are not small light pistols, I'm surprised by the ballistics which don't give the .40 a sizeable edge over the 9mm.

I am aware of them also, although many will say that they have seem a difference in actual shootings. But my agency traded in their aging Glock 22 .40S&W pistols for new Gen 5 Glock 17s in 9mm.

Thanks for watching! The difference in recoil is noticeable. It’s certainly something to consider when deciding what firearm is right for someone
