My heart is broken for her. I’ve never heard of OTS but it totally makes sense and I bet you I had this my senior year. I struggled so hard the entire year all my swims were off constantly. My body felt like it was broken.
Hopefully she can still make it in the 50.
She is born for this sport. She’s a natural swimmer. If she doesn’t go to Tokyo there is NO doubt in my mind she will make a comeback and she will be just fine. Team Simone 4Lyfe.

A lot of swimmers deal with this. Swimming is tough, training has to be dialed precisely to avoid this. It sucks, it’s unfair because you worked so hard

@@alvinfrias9197 it’s like swimmers just pride themselves on working so hard they forget that you need to RECOVER, to get better. I’ve been plateaued since 2018, almost quit, but then I took a year off, then gradually built up my training volume and intensity instead of just going balls to the walls every session and now I’m faster than I’ve ever been and I only swim 3 days a week. My daughter is a year round runner and she had OTS. Thank you Simone for your courage and honesty! My daughter had every symptom you described. Her coach didn't believe in OTS. It's real! She took several weeks off, came back slowly, and just PR'd yesterday. Endurance athletes must have ample time to recover. When you throw in the demands of school, the every day stress to perform, and the lack of recovery, it is the perfect storm. The body basically shuts down. Thank you so much for speaking about this.

So very proud of Simone and more importantly, so very glad that SHE is proud of herself. As a Black woman and Mom to two adult sons in their late 20’s, I too felt the brutality of the last few years. I had calls that were very emotional and raw with my children…even more intense than the initial, “this is how you respond to police interaction.” speech. I have cried many tears as my sons AND I wrestle with the “enormity” of the racial division discovered within not only America, but, within our own governmental members. I pray that Simone’s discovery of feeling proud, blessed and joyful with the accomplishments as they occur on the way to the “big payout” will resonate amongst those who need to hear it most!!! There is also the story of the young woman runner who was over trained by ( I believe it was ) the Nike team. They are also seeing this in women’s gymnastics, recent article about it.
Elite Young woman athletes need to be taught to listen to their bodies and speak up for themselves.

My daughter has a coach who thought kilometre after kilometre week in week out, 9 to 10 sessions a week was how to improve. Nearly every swimmer in his squad had severe declines in race times despite massive increases in training loads. We just finished junior Australian nationals and we aren’t in a position to shift away from this coach but as parents (who know there child) we took the decision to drop sessions in half and give her a choice in training outside the pool. We will see how her times go but as a parent who cares. All I know is she is happy and once again loving her training schedule. Her “coach” won’t talk to her as he is disappointed she has dropped so many distance sessions. Good coaches listen to there athletes, bad coaches bully, yell and make excuses. He is the later.

My old coached yelled and screamed at me if I missed any bit of yardage. At some point I became burnt out. By the time I was 15 years old I wasn’t dropping anymore and was only adding an insane amount of time. Now, three years out from switching to a team that emphasizes quality over quantity I am happy to say that I am dropping time again and love the sport like I did as a young swimmer. I am very proud her many accomplishments especially being a Black woman who dominated in this sport. Yeah its a hard sport not very easy dealing with water. She will be back in the next four years. Get well!!!

@@JT-gm4fkbecause there not that many Black women in that sports so I recognize for a Black person who is very good in that sport who can also aspire other woman of her race in that sports. Do you not know that many Black women and guys cannot swim. So yeah to me she is a Black woman!!!

Hi, Malia, I hope you're doing great.
      I'm also suffering from OTS.
What were your worst symptoms and how long did it take you to make a full recovery?
      How are you feeling now?
Did you experience any flair ups while trying to come back?

Indeed, my dear. You're still an Olympic champion, you're amazing, you're still a winner, and you're still a human being. Keep your faith & trust in the Lord strong and unwavering. He's got you. Just stay focused on your goals & keep it moving. And, you're exactly right...this isn't the last time we'll see you and it isn't the last time you'll do something great in the pool. God bless you, Simone. I'm so proud of you!

Before I clicked the video I could see done all over her face. Yes our bodies are the first doctors before we visit any other human being to consult about how we fell.
My grandmother found cancer cells in her breast and it took A COUPLE OF YEARS before the doctors could feel what she could feel and then a couple more month before the camera could locate anything. My grandmother had to constantly reiterate the lump until the camera saw it and the doctors were more open to helping. All this to say, you know your body before anyone else. Had my grandmother not kept being vocal, it would still be growing and slowly killing her. No one can tell you what your body tells you. You have one and when it’s done, you are done. ❤️
Because of this honest interview, I see strong and bold because you spoke up. Spiritually, I see a beautiful young woman shinning and telling her story. Your unique story isn’t over and you just freed a lot of people from these same questions, setbacks and issues with coaches, doctors and all in between.

I hope some coaches read this or just swimmers in general, this video has struck very close to home I also had dealt with overtraining. To the point where I have had to deal with a serious shoulder injury for the last 1.5 years and have still not been able to comeback fully. Overtraining is a serious problem in this sport as well as running and other endurance based sports. Everyone has different symptoms, they can be as simple and small as just some fatigue that gets better when you start your workouts. To what I have had to deal with which is an overuse injury. I do not think swimmers should swim 7,10,12 times per week all the time year around. While there are times that yes it can be beneficial, it should not be kept up for very long. Yet many teams and elite athletes will train with huge amounts of volume for months. Periodization is really lacking in this sport.Maintaining a feel for the water is important but resting and recovering from training should always be the priority and will decrease the chance of developing OTS or injury.

I to believe overtraining helps to lead to shoulder injuries. I fought for several thru an impingement syndrome, finally just had surgery. Take it easy

Covid-19 has had a toll on a lot of potential Olympians … imagine having prepared based on an expected timeframe, and then the Olympic Games are postponed … it’s really devastating seeing this happen to a great gal. I was worried for guys like Caeleb Dressel too … so much of swimming is a mental fight to perform at these levels. God Bless them All.

You have the heart of a champion, and like you said, at this particular moment and this particular day, your body did it’s best. That’s all any of us can ask of ourselves. We never know why this is not our day, but it’s usually in preparation for something bigger. America is proud of you and just stay strong, this is just one moment in time, you are so young and you have so many more moments. You are Great, most of us will never experience the chance to be a champion like you are !!!!!

I had to take a year off from swimming because I just didn’t enjoy the sport anymore. I had no motivation and I was burnt out. After that year I had to slowly build myself up again but I’m now finally making some forward progress with myself. Taking breaks is important and necessary for your mental and physical health.
