First of all i did watch the whole video for a strange reason. Am an engineer my self and i pay attention to details. Your are one of the roughest persons towards your equipment and tools i have ever seen. Usually i get really upset if i see someone missuses his tools, but i really enjoyed the procedure you follow you kept me wondering what your next move will be. Am well educated nuclear engineer and i have seen educated people not been able to do what you did. After all it's not a Ferrari or a satellite its just a lawn mower. You did the job with the tools you had and the knowledge you had and you had it working. More than half of the guys that make fun of you in the comments wouldn't know were to start from.
Lol! I agree it is just a lawnmower!~ I am trained to work on high performance motorcycles and approach motorcycle repairs MUCH differently. On lawn mowers, I rough things up a bit to show that any hack mechanic can fix a lawnmower in his or hers backyard and for the entertainment. Thanks for watching!
I recently bought a used 917 series with this same deck: it was quite rusted out around the hanging tab on the right front edge: it was only hanging on by ~50% of the surrounding metal, and what was left was less than was ~50% of original thickness; but at least the position was preserved! I thought about welding it; even discussed with a friend of mine (who's worked as a welder); we were both concerned about the thin metal versus the thick bracket...😳 I poked around my workbench, and found I had a piece of sheet metal ~1/10" thick (didn't put a caliper to it), that was big enough to overlap the really rusted out area by quite a bit and thin enough I could still trim it down by hand, and get it to contour to the curve, so I attached it with a lot of blind rivets from the inside to reconstruct/ reinforce the wall of the deck! ☺ the real problem was that that tab is not coming out perpendicularly to the wall, so just snipping a couple pieces of angle iron to brace it, wasn't going to work! 😮 But I had some old Stanley door hinges, and I realized, that if I bolted one on each side, they can lock in the angle pretty well! 😊 (it didn't have to be extremely precise; it's supposed to be parallel to the other tab, but, it's a loose joint with that swinging bar.) So, I prepped with a goodly amount of wire brushing; pre-painted; did quite a bit of drilling in place; wrestled those rivets in, to patch it up, and then some more drilling, for bolting on the reinforcement hinges, then some more painting; looking much better (the P.O. had done a lot mulching' without cleanig); I cleaned up more of the easy to acces areas, and used up the can of Rustoleum, but, I had to get it back together before forgot how I took it apart! What I forgot to do was to re-assemble in order of DE-creasing difficulty, so had to undo several links, but all back together! ...but still had to wait a day or two for the new filters to arrive: the air filters were fairly clogged up/rotted; the oil was almost chocolate milk! I knew it had been running fairly well, just wanted to get some clean oil on a good filter, before I finally put it to work today! Yay! Rides pretty smooth! Too bad it's built for someone who is 5'6"! 😉

The slo-mo hammering @ 22:04 made me choke on my beer b/c it was so funny!!! I've been doing this same thing ALL day, so I can appreciate the drama ! Cheers!
if you ever have a bad bearing stuck on a spindle ; wrap a rag around bearing (flying shrapnel) , clamp it in your vise till outer race shatters , grind thru inner race in one spot . never fails .
Just a heads up next time punching out the spindle mandrel shafts leave the nut on and put punch in the center . It prevents damage to the threads on the shaft.
Not bashing your craftsmanship just it's always great to pass helping information to help someone to save money on not damage parts and force you to buy new. Great videos by the way 👍
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
I have exact same mower. Picked it up for 700 bucks. Deck is in far better condition but I still feel like I overpaid twice caz I had to replace entire steering rack and do all that cleaning, scraping and painting the deck. Also oil change. Oh well, I learned something about these tractors. Lessons don't come cheap I guess. Thanks for a fun video.
nice video. It helped me replace the spindle shaft. I was worried that it would take a press. Just bang them out and tap in new ones with the new shaft. That is the same mower I have had running since I bought it in 2000. I convert it to a snow blower in the winter.
Late to party. You are 2 funny. Have the same mower. One of the front brackets ( that hold the “tie-rod”) snapped. I put a backer plate on the inside. Used 2 angle brackets on outside to hold bracket. Used Permatex cold weld epoxy to hold bracket in place before installing angle brackets. Worked out perfect. Solid as hell. Of course replaced mower belt while I was at it. After watching your video I don’t feel so bad about how much work mine was.😂
24:36 Jeff I got a question the engagement pulley on my green craftsman lt000 deck don’t move freely like urs it is hard 2 push it into the engagement position and idk why
You may have to take apart the pivot bracket, bolt, washers etc. to derust, relube and reasseble. Also, make sure your return spring on the deck for the pivot bracketis there and functioning
What you have there is a Poulan with Craftsman stickers. I have a 42" Poulan that except for the hood is identical. My deck was rusted through in the middle so I welded in some sheet metal, sprayed it down with rust converter and truck bed paint. Now I know how to redo the bearings, thanks. Good video, Just need to get one more year out of it, can't afford a new one this year. Retired ya know....
Steve Richardson, what he has is an AYP (American Yard Products which became Husqvarna and that also makes Poulan Pro mowers). You can purchase the exact same mower under all 3 names just with different paint and plastic trim.
Bit of advice Jeff.....................When swinging a large hammer and your hand is in close proximity, use a pair of Visegrips locked onto the Punch, that way your hand will be out of harms way.
I have a very close Craftsman mower. Wondering if idler belt pullers are supposed to slide back and forth in the half moon groove? I don't see how else the spring would be able to keep the belt tight. The bolt holding the pulleys was tightened so much that they wouldn't slide. I loosened them but seems like there is too much play now.
I have a Craftsman LT 1000 looks like the same mower--rebuilt the cutter deck and scraped the 16.5 single Brigs and dropped a Brigs 18.5 V-tec twin in it . pick up a new set of rear tires tomorrow. Had some help from a friend. We should have it going in a few days. Want to race around your yard cutting grass ? LOL
@@JeffsLittleEngineService I bought a 1986 Lawn Chief, the other day.the Deck bearings are shot.i used the BFH method and it worked.lol.man...thanks.not sure if I can find parts for it though.....
Exact same deck as mine and I was looking what springs I was missing and you had the same issue with the actuator pulley. Cool. I took your advice and removed the "brakes" on the main pulleys but they also work as belt guides. so I have to remove the deck again and reinstall the brakes. Fun video by the way. Loved the chicken cacophony!!
Another tip on keeping your mower deck last a little longer at the end of every season clean the grass off get a paint brush and put Chainsaw Bar Oil spread it all over it like your painting the whole bottom of it and it will soak in and keep it from rusting out did the blades every night all underneath you can do a little bit on the top if you want but doesn't really need to be done mostly underneath.
I have one I have rebuilt and repaired about 6 times. every time it breaks my wife says well we have to get a new mower! I say yea right, it gets fixed again!
wolf: I've had my craftsman for 21 years now. I cut 3 of my neighbors lawns for 17 year gratis. And mine. The only things replaced so far are tires, and belts. I changed things years ago and will not buy new if it can be fixed. I also had a 1986 Dodge Ram for 29 years that never failed to start. Things were starting to get costly to repair, so I bought a 2003 Silverado that looks like new. I'll drive it until I croke.
Mr.Jeff, the O'reileys in my town must have a fortune from me going in there buying penetrating fluid. Penetrating fluid works absolute miracles and goes a long way!
That guy Taryl fixes all, is pritty smart too! I took a course on small engine reair, online . I will start posting videos as soon as I can get a go pro!
CJ good for you I learned hands on in a mower shop and then tested with Briggs then some refresher courses / seminars with Briggs back in the early 80's ..... Paid off well with my other trades that I did in my course of 55 years of age..... Looking forward to some vids but you can use a smart phone to make them and upload to You Tube like I do on my channel....... Plus Tard Mon Ami ~!~!
Last time I had a blade go flying while hammering it off, I ended up with 6 stitches in the forehead. The blade bounced back and caught me in the head. My wife was not impressed.
When you use the nut on the shaft to protect the threads, try running the nut down flush with the top of the shaft. That will effectively make the nut and shaft a solid bar to hit with the hammer and protect the threads on the shaft while also preventing the top of the nut from mushrooming inward and messing up the threads in the nut. From the looks of things, you should donate that mower to Ernest so he can mow his yard!
AMAZING video here! I have a HUGE mower junkyard near where I live and am planning to restore a few of them because once fixed they will be better than any of the new Chinese junk made today....
Well you put a different spin on how to work on a mower. LOL. I may just watch it again ! Headed out to my shop to remove those darn blade brakes once and for all.
I still trying to mine to start. New batt no clicks at the solenoid or carb . Ordered a new ignition switch . Multi meter says the noid is good . I have my doubts.
Ernest Goes Lawn Mowing! Saved a bit of money there, just some time, sweat, and swearing. 😎 Ernest might want to spray the bottom of the deck with some rubberized undercoating, to help keep the rust down.
I'm Earnest when I tell you that you are completely nuts. You coulda just backed out gracefully, but ohhhh nooooo. Not you Jeff. My Craftsman CV16 (16.5!) hand-me-down is the generation previous and so old that nobody makes videos about that thing. After a master fix with duct tape last week the thing finally just quit mid-yard. El finito. Something in the ignition pooped. So I'm done. Now it's a downhill racer only. I know when to quit. (Yes, they do say 'quitters never mow' but so be it!) Poor old thing. Else I had ALL the fun watching you dog it. Ya done great! I'll send it to you for parts.
Wow, Nothing for 4 yrs.? Thanks for the close up shot of the replacement springs. Saved the day. But what the heck -I do not even have a cable behond the bracket holding the wire atop the pulley, what's that do?
When tightening the right mandrel pulley you mentioned the threads must have been stripped. The reason it was hard to tighten is because the end of the nut got smashed by the sledge hammer when you were removing the shaft. The smashed end made the nut like a lock nut.
I rescued an E-Z 19.5 horse opposed piston Vanguard 42" mower that was on it's way to the dump. The deck was GONE! Ordered a new deck shell BUT I poured those silly 'mulching' vent holes around the spindles full of epoxy resin so now no more rust starting places and I can blow the deck clean instead of having a bunch of junk on top. Took new spindles BUT I drilled the legs out and ran bolts with nuts through so I can get them back off without breaking the legs off with the self-tapping bolts from the factory. It has rear side rollers and just replaced the factory jobs with Ebay Club Cadets with grease fittings. Painted the under side of the deck too and all the hardware transferred over with a little straightening and lubing. Pulled the tranny and lubed it too. All I lack is some steering box work BUT it cuts like a carpet with Gator blades.. Good job, Jeff! The old deck was collapsed where the spindles bolted on.Not now!
For what they are those LT1000s are good little workhorses aren't they? Easy to work on and the parts are readily available. I just rebuilt my deck after 16 years. I was going to scrap the old spindles, but you got me thinking that if the Chinese replacements turn out to be junk, I may later decide to rebuild the original spindles. I'm sure that would be a pain in the ass, but it might be worth it.
Fixed up old Craftsman standard transmission mower including welding deck. Cuts great and runs great, hope to get a couple years or more out of it. Problem I have now is it appears the brake disc gear inside tranny is "disconnected". The brake pads stop the disc from turning but I can still turn the wheels when on. is there a simple fix or do I have to junk it?
I'll give you a little trick for being that thing out you put the nut almost seated to flat with the shaft you take a piece of board you put it on top of it you take a sludge hammer and you hit the board make sure you put the board vertically cuz if you put it the horizontally most likely the board will just shatter and break through
Your seem to know what your doing, so why half ass this job? You half ass the cleanup of the deck , you half ass the paint job, then you guess you need to do something with the blades you say, BEING that you have gone to all the trouble of rebuilding the thing. Wow what a guy. If this is for yourself !! Way to go my man you have a working machine to cut grass. But if to sell, well after watching this I would be looking elsewhere. Your know what to do, what and how to get it done. No doubt. Thanks for your video my man. Take care of you and yours.
It just really makes you wonder... the big dog earth movers keep their paint, like giant Caterpillar, Volvo, Komatsu, Terex . Why can’t the lawn mower makers use some of that technology on mower decks and paint on home stuff?

good tips!
Thanks!
I'd probably put a junk piece of wood between me hammer and the top of the shaft. I know it softens the blow, but it absorbs all the damage.
Get a brass punch and you can hit it all you want without damaging the shaft
AMAZING video here! I have a HUGE mower junkyard near where I live and am planning to restore a few of them because once fixed they will be better than any of the new Chinese junk made today....
Excellent video YOU DA MAN!
haha!
22:00 Why would you turn the throttle down? It should always be full throttle.
Engine warm up should be at 1/2 throttle or less
Well you put a different spin on how to work on a mower. LOL. I may just watch it again !
Headed out to my shop to remove those darn blade brakes once and for all.
lol!
I still trying to mine to start. New batt no clicks at the solenoid or carb . Ordered a new ignition switch . Multi meter says the noid is good . I have my doubts.
check the continuity on each wire and the ground wire. I found a mouse had chewed my wires, leading to no clicks
Ernest Goes Lawn Mowing! Saved a bit of money there, just some time, sweat, and swearing. 😎
Ernest might want to spray the bottom of the deck with some rubberized undercoating, to help keep the rust down.
Thanks for the laugh! and for watching!
I think a bird 🦅 💩were you welded you crack me up thanks for the video hope you make more 👍
lol! thanks friend
Jeff's Little Engine Service 🤪
Wow, Nothing for 4 yrs.? Thanks for the close up shot of the replacement springs. Saved the day. But what the heck -I do not even have a cable behond the bracket holding the wire atop the pulley, what's that do?
earlier model decks used a metal rod instead of a cable
Great job jeff.
Are you using solid wire in that welder instead of fluxcore?
now that you mention it I will check, hopefully it's flux core!
He fixed it Ernest ..good as new ! :-)
I liked you riding toward Earnest, that was the stuff. Lol.
lol! thanks for watching!
Great job Jeff.... Keep up the good work
Thanks friend!
Yes I agree, The parts are cheap and easy to get and pretty easy to work on for the most part. My personal mower is one of these
Fixed up old Craftsman standard transmission mower including welding deck. Cuts great and runs great, hope to get a couple years or more out of it. Problem I have now is it appears the brake disc gear inside tranny is "disconnected". The brake pads stop the disc from turning but I can still turn the wheels when on. is there a simple fix or do I have to junk it?
Ernest was hating🤣...awesome job
Thanks! lol! Yes he's is my local hater, sometimes he is a nice, wise old fart though
I'll give you a little trick for being that thing out you put the nut almost seated to flat with the shaft you take a piece of board you put it on top of it you take a sludge hammer and you hit the board make sure you put the board vertically cuz if you put it the horizontally most likely the board will just shatter and break through
good tip!
Thanks for your service
7:49 " Well I'm tired of waiting, so I'm just gonna grab a bigger hammer. " :-)
wow were can i learn to weld as good as you
lol! It takes years of not caring what my welds look like to get this not good at welding
Take care of you and yours.
not much of a restoration true. but it is still working good and most everything was free!
I like this yard, yes you can create something
It just really makes you wonder... the big dog earth movers keep their paint, like giant Caterpillar, Volvo, Komatsu, Terex . Why can’t the lawn mower makers use some of that technology on mower decks and paint on home stuff?
Cost
Yah. I want to redo my 48 inch John Deere this spring. Strip. Sand blast. Prime then use undercoating.
LMAO!! You are so funny to watch!!! Good job on the deck!
thanks friend!
Is there a way to get the bottom bearing off of a shaft?
sometimes it is near impossible
That's what I figured, any tool slim enough wouldn't be strong enough.
Use a bearing splitter and a puller and add some heat
Good video Jeff. Nice job.
Great video, thanks
Thanks for watching!
