It should be normalised to ask ANYONE before petting their dog, unless the dog is super friendly and just wanders up to you, itself (a service dog will not).
A service dog will wander up to you if it’s owner is hurt and is not with them, just thought I’d tell you that
@@mageofdoomsie1598 actually that’s what service dogs are trained to do if their owner is hurt, they will run to the nearest person they can find (although if it’s no where near people, like in the middle of the desert or woods, it will stay with the owner) and try leasing them to the owner

When my daughter saw a service dog for the first time she asked me if she could go ask if she could let him. I explained to her that the dog wasn’t only a pet but a service dog and they wear that vest when they are working. Since they’re working they need to focus and we can’t be petting them. We had a conversation about why people need service dogs and how dogs helped. Now when we see a service dog she will always say “look mom that dog over there is working!” Lol it’s very important to educate our children and teach them to be respectful.

@@M3LTr1 There are many people that have disabilities you cant see. You need to have a certified service dog and I thinkkkk you need to have some kind of medical proof in order to get one. One of my teacher in middle school trains service dogs, so he made sure that we all knew how to safely approach them and ask if we could pet them and interact with them. I remember one being named Pebble, who was a black lab and would curl up under my desk.
All the kids that had been known for being anxiety filled or come from bad situations often ended up in his class. And as long as you were putting effort in the class, you got to play with the dogs. Same teacher helped me set up my cat as a therapy cat when bad things happened in high school.

@@gukkiecrumbs yes. My cat is registered as an emotional therapy cat so that if I'm ever traveling I can bring her with me on planes, or if I'm having terrible anxiety or something in a similar vein, she helps. That's really sweet. I wish I had a teacher like that because I have bad anxiety.
@@indodinoyoutube depending on where you live, and what type of school you go to, you could potentially ask if you could have a stuffed animal of some kind to help you when you're stressed out with anxiety. Got made fun of in PE for having a small version of my toy wrapped around my arm. Still never a problem to ask to pet. They’re working but also that love they get from a stranger can make their day. The owner knows it’s dog, if they wish you don’t they let you know. But if they oblige, In anyway it shouldn’t hinder the dog but only encourage good behavior on a regular basis and around strangers

We have a service dog who comes into my Starbucks and I'm always like "look at the Lil man doing his job" and the owner asked me if I wanted to pet him and give him a pup cup and I'm like "offuckingcourseido" so I got to do that, he is such a sweet Lil man, I think he might still be in training but was so obedient he didn't even eat the whipped cream right in front of him until the owner said to.

@@erinkhan886 do you not understand the concept of a Service Dog?
Cute service dog: One of my professor’s has a service dog that’s also an institutional animal for learning. He was in a very neglectful and abusive household. (He was restricted to a *very* small kennel almost at all times. It was a about 1.5’ cube for a growing lab puppy.) His name is different than it was to help keep that part of his life a distant memory, and he’s know big, chunky, and happy. He still gets scared sometimes, so at the start of the semester, everyone in the class gave him a dog biscuit so he would have a positive experience with everyone right off the bat. (And no, it wasn’t a dangerous amount of treats, the prof is for pet nutrition.) He goes up to people when he isn’t actively working for some scratches when he feels like it.
I think he also gravitates to people when he senses they’re upset. This morning, he came up to me twice while I was having anxiety issues and was falling into a deep dissociative state. When I was too far in my own head to notice him standing beside me when he first came over, he brushed against me then just looked at me until I pet him. Then when the whole panicked opposite of dissociation kicked in and I felt like I was trapped in a huge mistake where I didn’t belong and couldn’t escape, he made his way back over. Blessed boy. The only reason I made it through class. Then when my next class was bad I also didn’t walk out.
That’s precious, he could sense that you needed a friend. 🥺
Wow she’s an incredibly beautiful dog!
Process of petting dog:
Establish contact with the owner, compliment dog, ask if dog is friendly, ask if dog wants to be pet, offer hand for a sniff, if dog accepts, pets begin
OMG the way she's carrying that toy "Dis one's mine, I take dis home" She did amazingly with that distraction!!
I have taught my kids to always ask before petting someone else’s pet and that is a very important thing.

Here’s something I thought I’d share with you all. A couple of years ago I was sitting at a bus stop waiting for the bus... still 20 minutes away... a blind lady came over and sat next to me with her guide dog. After we said hello to each other and a bit of a conversation later, I commented on how beautiful her companion was ( a golden long hair Labrador. Shiniest coat I’ve ever seen on a dog. So beautiful!). She thanked me,agreed and went on to to say she appreciated that I didn’t ask to pet her. Almost like she knew I was probably tempted to! (And she would not have been wrong if she did!)
She said, “ You know, she is such friendly dog. I wouldn’t have blamed you if you did! Not a mean bone in her body. Knows you or not, her first desire is to be friends with you. She adores the attention. When I am at home she is just a regular house pet, If a friend payed me a visit, this one would jump up and greet her and expect her pats from my friend at the door. She wouldn’t be allowed in by her until she did! But if I am out anywhere like I am now, and her harness is on, and if I ran into that same friend that visited me at home, even if the visit was only a couple of hours before, she will just sit next to me and act as if she doesn’t know my friend at all. Her mind is 100% on her job the second her harness is on her! To her, her duties as a guide dog are first and foremost! That’s how she was trained. Nothing else matters to her. She really is such a well trained dog!”
She smiled and went on to say, “Mind you, on a rarest of occasion I might bend the rules and allow a young child or adult to give her a pat if we are just sitting and resting somewhere. This one time, it was a little girl and her mother. ‘Go on if the lady says it’s all right.’ She said to her daughter. The mother and I chatted for a little bit and she said to me that the way my dog looked at me it was as if she saying, ‘Are you sure I can be petted? I am on duty you know!’ I replied to her that I think my dog obeys the rules more than I do!”
It was such a wonderful chat I had with her and I felt so much better after it! Such a lovely person and such a loyal dog! God bless them both wherever they are now!
tl;dr
Awesome story! It was very well written. I could imagine myself there! Thank you.
I've seen many ppl getting pissed even just because someone was looking at the dog. I'm like " bro tf are we supposed to do? We have eyes, we look"
@Firstname Lastname you really shouldnt try petting a service dog either way
It’s the same concept of, a woman is breastfeeding & I can see her. Look away. It’s very simple to just blink & avert your gaze.🤷♀️
@@lizzymc1300 no, it's not the same. A woman breastfeeding cover herself and the baby while doing it, therefore even if your eye look that way, there's nothing to see. ALSO u can find a woman breastfeeding in public like one time in a month. There are more more and more ppl nowadays that take a dog and name it service dog for any kind of problem. U usually find at least one service dog at day if not more. More importantly, if u look at a dog and he just can't concentrate because u look at them, than that just mean that he is not properly trained
@@ferelcopter5126 see with service dogs you still shouldn't full on stare at them, of you see one, look away 🤷
Service dogs aren't perfect and just like how people get distracted or anxious with somebody full on staring at us so do dogs. As long as the dog is still paying attention to handler, under control and not behaving in a way service dogs shouldn't then it's none of your concern. Or unless you have a service dog with you and the other one is trying to attack yours.
@@spac3kidd090 if I'm in a room eating with a service dog in front of me then I'm not gonna look up to the sky my full meal just because LOOKING (notice how no-one ever talked about staring except you) at the service dog might distract them from their job.
that's smart to have her hold a toy the whole time and stay focused and that way when she drops it to say hi to someone and she has to pick it back up which helps her regain focus
Those tags though
The lady handled it very well. She asked for permission and was very respectful of the handler and his time. This is how people SHOULD treat all pets, but the world is filled with entitled brats
I saw a woman with a guide dog in Kmart the other day, I stepped aside and ignored the dog completely.
As cute as the dogs are they have an important job to do, and they get plenty of love and attention from their handlers once they’re out of their harness 💕❤️💕
Thank you! This is the actual proper way to “approach” a service dog which is to not.👏🏻
Thank you so much for this ❤️❤️ as a guide dog user myself I appreciate this so much!

Congratulations, here's your treat
I regularly see a seeing eye dog while shopping every week and being a huge dog lover i fight my urge to 'pat the doggie' as its on duty. So i usually just squeal in my head while mentally saying "OMG DOOOGGGGIIIIEEEEE SUCH A CUTE PUPPER"
The kid must be pretty happy 😊
What’s funny is when i said $20 bucks the 1st time , she stated to walk away and said “i don’t have any money “
this is how service dogs should be. one time at a hotel i was staying at (it was a fairly nice hotel and was pet friendly) a girl who apparently has seizures has a “service dog” bc it has a vest on and it’s kinda aggressive and barks at other people and growls at other dogs. when you know you have an aggressive dog you should keep it on a leash at all times, that’s common sense, but one time i went down to get a new keycard and i brought my dog down to the lobby with me. my dog was sitting between my legs and her “service dog” runs full speed at my dog and attempts to bite him but i grabbed her vest and pushed her away. mind you my dog wasn’t fighting back, just backing up into the wall. and also after that the owner comes up and pets her dog like she did something right…. the nerve she has to call her dog a service dog..
See ppl like that abusing the service dog title is what screws shit up and fuels all those UA-cam videos.
System should be changed so it's no longer possible for them to do that shit and service dogs SHOULD be easily identifiable by common ppl
True and proper service dogs, and even some emotional support dogs have been through rigorous training so that they are calm in many different situations. If someone’s service dog is behaving like an average pet (jumping up, barking, growling, acting nervous or shy) chances are, the owner is abusing the title or the dog wasn’t properly trained for actual service/assistance.
@@AshlieJermaine i’m convinced it wasn’t trained properly. service dogs shouldn’t even really be distracted by anything, better yet bite other dogs. super upsetting for the actual service dogs out there

I love how kind she was. She asked politely and wasn’t being like those people who will just run to a dog and pet them without permission. Second i love how she stayed a small distance. We need to be like this kid
Service Dogs tend to grab all of the attention. In thinking about all that they’ve done and do to help someone is just literally astounding. What they do, a human would not do out of kindness, let that mellow. AWEFUL THOUGH! It is a respect factor when we want to interact with them. Personally I like to admire them in just looking.♥️
i don't even pet other people's dogs who AREN'T doing a job other than being a cute pup without asking. obviously, you don't absolutely have to do as i do, i just find it more respectful to ask before petting someone elses dog. just a friendly reminder, ask before you pet dogs, especially service dogs, the doggos are adorable yes but they have a very important job to do! :)
FR I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t even acknowledge the dog anymore. Like humans naturally get excited and want to pet things, but I’ve learned to just ignore them. I feel like we should really start treating dogs as normal occurrences, if you see one, cool. It’s not a zoo petting attraction. I feel bad for service dog owners, people constantly approach you to talk or pet your dog, it would be so exhausting even if they ask nicely.
You also never know what kind of traumas the dog may have! Some rescues have traumas around specific types of people and may become aggressive if approached by someone who looks like the type. Wouldn't want to risk the dog's, owner's or your own safety for a small pet
I got one better than that don't ask to pet a service dog and parents need to educate their kids on why they shouldn't pet the service dog
@@kas_ualties7692 I mean if it’s not a service dog you can still ask like my dogs absolutely love when strangers say hi and pet them it’s their favorite part of a walk besides peeing every few minutes
But re:original thread, it’s not a good idea to pet someone’s dog without asking. Some dogs get freaked out by strangers or just like tall people if they’re little or if they’re approached too quickly, etc.
Edit: i should disclose my bias - I’m at college away from my pups (and my old job at a groomer’s) and so whenever a random dog comes up to me or I can pet a dog in some way or another I literally have to hold back tears it’s the best part of my day
Finally someone who keeps their kids in check
I even trained my dog to recognize service dogs (usually any dog with a vest/harness is how she knows to not approach or that “play time” is not appropriate). I use “Career Dog” as the command and she knows to change direction if I follow with “turn around” or she’ll sit and wait for them to pass by when I say “look at me.” It can take a while to teach but very cute because you can tell they understand 🤣😇
Stfu no u didn’t 🤣
While I’d never ask to pet a service dog (that’s marked as one) because I know they’ve got jobs to do and things to be aware of, that’s the perfect way to ask in my opinion. Ask from a distance then move in. Should be standard with any dog honestly
I love how we can see Nala get kinda distracted even after the person asked if they can pet her, she doesn’t pick up the item she’s being told immediately, and even after she does so she keeps looking in the direction of the person
That’s why service dogs should be left alone & not approached.🤷♀️
@@lizzymc1300 the owner said it was okay. to each their own. not your business
She’s not a service dog. I’ve been over this before on this channel. Unfortunately there’s no laws stopping people from doing this. The vest the dog is wearing can be bought is available online for less than twenty dollars and is not official. A real working dog would never walk around with a toy in her mouth. It distracts from the supposed epilepsy.
Everytime I see a dog I smile at them and send telepathic pats
Thank god her parents actually taught her to ask before petting
Literally everytime I asked my brother for anything while I was growing up "okay, 20 bucks"
I remember when I was around 5 there was a guy who would walk the neighborhood and have his dog. It was an English bulldog I believe and I remember this because I went up to the man and asked if I could pet his dog. He said no because his dog was really scared of most humans and he didn't want me to scare the dog because that could cause the dog distress and it could potentially attack me. So I never pet it but there are so many unforseen circumstances that the dog could be going through so always ask before you pet the dog and if you didn't ask DO NOT HAVE THAT DOG PUT DOWN IF IT ATTACKS YOU because we all know that if the victim presses charges then the dog can be put down
That's very true I know a man his dog was waiting for him to return the dog was in the truck windows were open about an inch for air. A stranger walks up to the truck sticks their hand inside to pet the dog and respectful got Bitten. And they wanted to sue the owner. They wanted the dog put down it's not the dogs fault that alot of people do not have common sence 🤯 the dog was doing his job protecting his owners property from someone he did not know. ❤
That’s not always the case, I had an acquaintance whose child was mauled by a chow that the family they were staying with kept.. they had the dog chained up and had put it outside when they let them move in, they just wasn’t watching their damn kid!! I had met her a year after this but she was complaining they never would do anything to the family or the dog. Well no wonder, it was her fault not the owners!! Perfect example of the example “no good deed goes unpunished”.
@@Legion-xq8eo I am sorry to hear that. It does happen especially with older dogs or certain breeds. And children usually like to pull the dogs tail , ears or hair which would make me upset . You should always ask first with any dog. It's simply respectful and keeps you from getting bit
yes ... but a Service Dog should not *ever* act / react aggressively at anything.
As to any other dog, definitely be cautious about that.
Mutual respect. Thats cool. Working or not working never approach a random persons animal. I have one dog who is reactive and while trained and restrained I am careful becuase I love him. You wouldnt breath on a stranger please dont approach my companion.
I work at a pet friendly hotel and we get the occasional guest with service dogs. I instinctively offer treats and ask if I can pet dogs, including service dogs. It feels like such an honor when I'm allowed to do that with service dogs
Even though some people don't realize service animals are amazing they still are helping the human in need so that lad was brought up right
I was gonna say, even though it sounds cruel, in all honesty, the proper way to approach a service dog is to not approach it all bc it is working doing its VERY important job, and even though most of them are trained to ignore distractions, it does happen and could be the split second they picked up on a cue and needed to alert their handler of danger so its best to just compliment, smile, nod and make eye contact with the handler rather than the doggo. Totally distraction/liability free on your part👍
Yes! Even a small distraction could make the dog miss something very important, could even be life threatening in certain situations
The vest says ask to pet, so I'm guessing the handler doesnt care along as they ask
Yes very important job yes of course this man is just a narccisist

The general rule is to actually leave service dogs be, no matter how cute they are or how much you wanna stroke them! You never know what their owners disability or health condition is, and drawing it's attention away may result in the dog missing the signs to let it's owner know they're about to have a seizure, or their blood sugars are dropping etc, as their attention is on you.

I think I’ve gotten mostly lucky when I went out. My service dog was able to work for a year and a few months full into non-pet friendly places before she started showing signs of unnecessary Guarding and plain unhappiness with working in the places we were going. Her work ethic is strong and she still tasks beautiful, keeping her training up and mental stimulation is going to be a constant. It’s just her happiness in different environments is not the same as when she first started working. So I’m slowly doing an early retirement from working, right now she still works amazingly and has fun working in some non-pet friendly places. With her early retirement I’m doing her part time first then full retirement in a couple of months. It’s mostly to get her to know she’s not going to go every where anymore and for me to get used to her not being around me all the time. But my interactions with people have been for the most part okay. I’ve come across the stares, some interesting questions, a lot of comments some good others questionable, many kids saying puppy or doggie, a couple trying to get her attention without prevail, and maybe two fakes with one being a close call attack. Even then for the most part people are respectful and keep to themselves. I have gotten one comment that creeped me out. For context I’m a teen handler my dad and I had gone to Walmart with my service dog right by my side in her heel, we walked down this isle to get to a section we wanted to reach when we crossed by this older gentleman who smiled at first and then as I walked past leaned in and said in the strangest tone I’ve ever heard “ I got a dog too “ that’s it nothing else just that. Me being uncomfortable with the too close contact I didn’t want, sped up a bit and kept walking, luckily my dad was a few feet behind and intersected after seeing my discomfort and him lean in. My dad didn’t hear what the man said but saw how I sped up and knew to take over and be his charming, but assertive self, he just made a small goodbye kinda kindly telling the guy off and caught up with me. That’s one of the ones that creeped me out. Also a few stares that lasted way too long and looked at me and my dog over and over again and didn’t say anything just stared, those are really uncomfortable and make my anxiety go through the roof so much so I start over heating. With breathing interruptions and alerts from her I was able to not go into a full episode of shutdown and severe heat fluctuations that could’ve ended with me on the ground for awhile till I could calm down and my temperature could level. Couldn’t have been able to handle it all without her, but with her help different parts of my disabilities are becoming easier to handle even on my own. Wouldn’t have been possible without her help. She is amazing at her job and tasking, but even then I won’t continue working a dog that dislikes the environment she’s being put into. So even though I wish we could stay a working team it’s for the best. I’m training myself to manage without her and possibly start training another dog for work soon.
But please from a handler just don’t interact with a working dog unless they come to you if the person is in danger or a severe episode, or if the tags on them say something like “ ask to pet “, but if not just don’t bother them and let them be. They are being as normal as they can and I promise they do not want a bunch of attention put on them. This is for most the only way they can live fulfilling lives. They don’t have a choice, it’s either have a trained medical equipment like their service dog or stay hospitalized or be a constant home body that only goes to doctor visits and around their neighborhood with help. Give them space and let them live in peace. This is not a choice for many and one I promise was not their first decision either, it was probably their last and only option that could fully work. So just be kind and leave them be. It will not harm you to not pet their service dog, but it could harm them if you choose to distract their dog from its job.
